She has a fine instrument, and manages this difficult piece, even if she hasn't managed to master it. She didn't sing badly, but she isn't a coloratura, and shouldn't be compared to a coloratura's lighter, and more agile, rendering. I would rather hear her in something other than this florid Verdi piece. She will likely emerge as a lyric-spinto with a good top extension. Not every soprano that can sing an Eb is a coloratura, that is a common misconception. She needs to find her fach.

A voice with IMMENSE possibilities and a good future! Yes there are things that need polishing, but until you can stand up and do better yourself, you need to learn to give CONSTRUCTIVE and informed criticism, or rather remain quiet! With further good coaching this young lady stands on the brink of becoming one of the 21st century's outstanding coloratura sopranos! She can be taught to make more of her trill and to work on her phrasing, which is already pretty good! Keep it up and aim HIGH!
I know it's easy to criticize but it's horrible: almost no musicality, no pathos, no phrasing, no understanding of the words. Dame Sutherland was applauding? And so what? What else was she supposed to do? Stand up and tell her to shut up? This girl is no soprano sfogato as Elvira should be! The cabaletta is awful, enunciation is terrible and NO TRILLS! 06:17 and up is a TOTAL MESS.
She had some major problems with the cabaletta...didn't know when to come in, didn't know any of the words...faked her way through it. And the poor thing needs to open her eyes...you don't sing to an audience with your eyes closed...you shut them out.
@belcunto of course, me too :) This girl needs to open her eyes - are the stage lights shining right into her or what? And gosh the phrasing... there are so many great sopranos in recording to hear the correct phrasing from, but this... goes against Verdi's markings in so many instances.
Dame Sutherland knows that this piece demands exceptional control. It is soft and has long phrases. It is easy for someone not in the situation to criticise her performance without realising the tremendous work and effort put into the piece. And no matter what plagues her mind, the wonderful artist sings with passion and emotion, and a smile. Dame Sutherland knows brilliant talent, even if it lacks some technique. The young artist is well deserving of any applause from Dame Sutherland.
Well deserving of applause, yes, she's good, but not THAT good. One can simply not forget the text in such a setting. One should certainly know the repertoir one is singing so well that nervosity wont make you forget the text. And Dame Joan didn't look as if she loved it. It was not a huge smile on her face and the applause was rather quaint. Don't put too much into the fact that she applauded. Have you heard about courtesy?
Havent you seen Streisand applauding Beyonce's dreadful version of The way we were with the same expression on her face (omg why on earth is she singing?)
Legends applaud often, that does not mean absolutely anything
How wonderful that someone could sound like Sutherland. I think that everyone who genuinely appreciates opera will be blessed to hear her. Sutherland was great, how wonderful the world has another great.
She sounds awesome. And very natural. But Joan's fans are so jealous when they see that somebody else can sing too. Try to imitate YOUR idol, it would be smarter than criticize brilliant performances of another people ))
Psychology of Joan's fans in most of commentaries - that's what kills me. :-)))

I agree. 3:20 she has no low notes, and to compensate, she throws a big smile. She does it a few times. And I know people will say she is having a bad day. HA! Whenever we say somebody is missing something major, they say "she had an off day". With the same logic, every time someone does something good, we should say "she was having an exceptionally good day". Why does she make that grimace at 6:20?? Now I know why they gave that title to this clip.

Yes, I have to agree with you. The interpretation is very bland, and the vocal production very laboured at times. It is also very difficult to communicate with your audience when your eyes are closed for so much of the time.

E. Steber is #1 with this aria. This girl is trying to hard to sound like Joan.

E. Steber is #1? And Joan #2? And classical music is a sort of world wrestling championship? :-))))
She's a little bit nervous, but take in consideration that it may be her first perofrmance on the big stage. :-))
She has a beautiful voice and has no need to trying to sound like Lady Joan or anybody else.
Moreover, her voice sounds more like "italian" than "australian", sorry :-))
