I've gone back to my roots and have been playing FF 1 - FF 12 (Excluding 11, of course).
Although FF 10 imo was the last of the Great, Epic Final's (FF 12 was great but not epic e.g. Balthier! Baby!) It does sadden me that FF 13 is such a disappointment and so is its Sequel (I'm probably halfway through it right now) and I don't think I'll go near FF13Versus.
Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, past FF games, Chrono Cross, Moster Rancher, Digimion, some other crappy games they mixed in their as well. Square Enix employe to boss: "did we miss anything, how many games should we mix in to make it stop sucking"
@SwobyJ A hype train for over five years? You don't seem to understand that for a video game (or even a movie) that's a REALLY long time. Blizzard can get away with it because their games are MMOs and have long life spans. But for an RPG? Like I said , because of poor decisions like these, FF is losing to other big RPG titles.
(Cont...), so I'll give the franchice a 2nd chance and approach this game with an open mind... After I finish Dark Souls (just reached the Painted World) and Assassin's Creed Revelations(for closure) of course lol.
I beat FFXIII and I can say with validity: that game was a case study in missed potential and a poor way to introduce someone to a series of any kind. BUT it has an interesting mythos that I'm curious about,..

i tried the demo for this game and got bored of it after 3 mins. lol...the story seems lame, graphics look outdated, characters are awful(it reminds me of ff10 characters), you only control 2 characters..(wtf) and you control monsters now? what is this? pokemon? What's so bad about controlling monsters? It's that very mechanism which negates the "press x" argument, and even so, you still need to switch paradigms and use items (I'm not sure if you use techniques on this game).
Therefor I am concluding you didn't even play the demo.

maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it have made more sense just to create a third character permanent to the party, and just keep them somewhat limited to the story? or even 2 or 3 characters that come in and out of the party like the old school FF's? The monster thing just seems Jar Jar Binks cheesey to me.
@Stormcloud410 It would be good yes, but I think Square wished to provide more 'activities' for players (to both make the main gameplay more interesting, and to give us things to grind out if we wish), and this fits the bill.
A (very possible) concluding FFXIII-3 would likely imo not include monster taming, and would play out as you explained. At that point, I'm sure there would be plenty of older (Dajh, older Hope, NORA?) characters to draw from, and new ones.

Ya, I'm glad they actually took criticism from the original when making this, but ultimately, I'd have rather gotten Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts III or a Final Fantasy VII remake. You know, games that have a really high demand.
@ZACKFAIR1205 Verses is well into production. KH3 is likely heading into pre-production (except they have to decide whether to put it on the current console generation), and SE doesn't want to touch FFVII again, likely possibly due to the ravenous fanbase that would crucify them for 'doing it wrong'.
So just get XIII-2 if you feel like it, and enjoy it for what it is - a spinnoff-sequel with fun to be had.
@SwobyJ But it's almost a joke with Versus in the sense that we know practically NOTHING about it. They show ONE trailer per year, practically. KH's problem is that they have milked the series so much. Since KHII, there has been Coded, Re:Coded, Re: Chain, Birth by Sleep and now 3D. Get on with it, please. And the same problem comes up with FFVII. I agree with you that they may be wary of a remake. But don't you think that milking that Compilation to death hasn't hurt the original as well?

People lose interest.

It was an amazing year for games, with really big releases. In order to compete with the other titles, the developers/publishers gotta sell you with their game. Japanese fans are very loyal to FF. But overseas? With Western RPGS like Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls beating them out, they really gotta step up their game.

@SwobyJ This is more than a spin-off sequel. The story is far deeper than XIII's, and there are many connections with Versus XIII which are really highlighted in this game.
@AdamAdmaAdam Agreed. Personally, I'm very glad that they're introducing the ideas of what is beyond the Door of Souls, the history of the 'god' fal'cie (like Etro), and even the power of chaos may play a role in Versus.
FFXIII had all this lore and squandered it on annoying character scenes, the 'chase' story, etc.
@SwobyJ Yep, unfortunately though I think versus should be completely separate from FNC, the concept of a final fantasy set in a near real world is so unique, I just can't see it being connected to pulse/cocoon etc. It should be FF15 imo

was the worst Final Fantasy. Ever. Now I love Final Fantasy and I really did play through FF 13 to the end, hoping it would get better. It didn't. The story was so doldrumed, the battle system was horrific and I felt no bond with ANY of the Characters even Lightning.
Here's hoping that FF XIII-2 will renew my faith in the FF Series.

@billsonfire1 The battle system may look complicated visually but its actually a lot simpler than some of the earlier battle systems. All you need to do is change the paradigms so that you decide when to heal or when to bring in the heat. The AI does the attacking for you

@billtree52 It still has linear sections, like a)any Final Fantasy has and b)the Gran Pulse area in Ch 11 FFXIII did, but now there is much more area exploration, side-quests, side-stories, hidden areas, open areas, etc compared to XIII. Also, having locations set in several time periods (due to time travellll!) helps.

I've played a number of FF games and enjoyed them immensely but 13 was terrible - possibly the worst JRPG I've ever played. The characters were irritating, the game was way too linear and it ended up just being plain boring. Sure it looked nice but that was about it. I'm completely confused and shocked that they'd make a sequel to it.... I was hoping they'd brush it under the carpet and go back to their old, great standards.
@Swoop2UK I'm in Ch 11 in XIII and it's much better than most of the (lackluster) previous story/game, and I enjoy the greater openness of it. I really enjoyed the XIII-2 demo (catch it on PSN and XboxLive) so yeah, suck it. lol. I have XIII-2 preordered and I'm not ashamed!
@Infernofury Yes. They have compete access to the level system though (and all the roles), and there are 150+ monsters for the 3rd character slot. Lightning is only playable in the initial prologue tutorial (lamely..), and Snow is a guest character for a bit. On the bright side, you can make a 3-chobobo monster team!!
It says something about how far Bioware have fallen when this looks better than their recent games. Maybe they need a few flops, so that they'll raise their game; which is what seems to have happened with Square.
@rezzmenow Not necessarily. Seeing as how it's a cliffhanger in a strange story of mechanical gods, time travel, and cosmic power - it's not like she's 'dead dead'. FFXIII was Lightning and Snow saving Sarah, and XIII-2 is Serah and Noel trying to save Lightning (so a reversal). The potential concluding XIII-3 could flip that back, with a full party again, and Serah possibly not being completely lost. Moogle can do whatever though. lol.
@ztaylor82 IMO it's better. Putting a Commando level up on a small node is just a generic level up in all stats, while putting it on a large node would give you a specifically larger boost in Strength instead. This system actually allows more unique development than XIII, but also sort of even XII and X (because you can't truly max out your characters, and they are capped based on your crystarium choices).
pick abilities? no thanks, ill continue to auto battle since it requires no skill to win battles until you get to a strong monster/boss THEN ill pick abilities.
@7isanumber Isn't the KH3 team busy with the 3DS KH? Plus Versus has been in development for 7 years and I REALLY want them to finish it before they move to a huge project like KH 3. Besides, Versus has similar gameplay to KH minus the Disney characters so I think you should be excited for it as well.
Why so many complaints about the demo? I liked it. Call me crazy, but I liked XIII and I've been excited for the sequel since I heard it was coming out. From what I got from the demo, the soundtrack seems like it's going to be even more awesome than XIII's and though the whole "capture a monster and train it" thing was confusing at first, it's not horrible. At least it puts the team number back at three... I was a bit bummed to see only Serah and Noel. :/ I'm hoping Sazh will make an appearance

this game rocks! Lightning looks so much more badass then before but the same can be said for snow as well and serah looks just plain awesome. Basically all of the characters both new and returning from the last game look better, graphics look stunning to me. I love this series so much,thirteens story will be the best by far to me of all of them.

You do know that they all (including the so-far exclusive PSP FFXIII Type-0) all take place in the same overall world, with l'cie, fal'cie, the same 3-4 major gods, crystal powers, etc? Learning more about XIII world is learning more about the XIII Verses world. Just the tone and gameplay are different.
@VampireDude111 Each of the Final fantasy do not have any relation to each other. They all take place in seperate worlds with very different settings and characters. This one is one of the exceptions being the second XIII. You'd have to play thirteen first to understand this game.
13 is good, but it decided by changing things by being the most linear of the Final Fantasy games, frankly I'm not actually finished with the game sadly. Haven't played it since that big boss in Chapter 16 I think it is? Its the boss that has it's own music, fucking huge and some dude transformed into it
@Sora1123 That would be Chapter 9 (there are only 13 chapters). Ch 10 is underground in a Pulsian 'Ark' of weapons, then you escape the world and land on Pulse for the super long 'open world' Chapter 11 (post-game is here too, super bosses etc). Ch 12 is back on Cocoon in the captial of Eden getting attacked all over, and Ch 13 is the core of Cocoon with the last and final bosses.
I don't wanna play as Serah and the new kid! I miss Lightning, Hope, and Snow! Best group for FFXIII was Fang, Lightning, and Vanille! Not Serah and the new kid! Either way I'm getting this game though

The entire series of games are great, then ff11 came out.

@SwobyJ This is more than a spin-off sequel. The story is far deeper than XIII's, and there are many connections with Versus XIII which are really highlighted in this game.

@AdamAdmaAdam Agreed. Personally, I'm very glad that they're introducing the ideas of what is beyond the Door of Souls, the history of the 'god' fal'cie (like Etro), and even the power of chaos may play a role in Versus.
FFXIII had all this lore and squandered it on annoying character scenes, the 'chase' story, etc.

@SwobyJ Yep, unfortunately though I think versus should be completely separate from FNC, the concept of a final fantasy set in a near real world is so unique, I just can't see it being connected to pulse/cocoon etc. It should be FF15 imo

I'm probably gonna get razed to the ground here, but FF 13. . .
was the worst Final Fantasy. Ever. Now I love Final Fantasy and I really did play through FF 13 to the end, hoping it would get better. It didn't. The story was so doldrumed, the battle system was horrific and I felt no bond with ANY of the Characters even Lightning.
Here's hoping that FF XIII-2 will renew my faith in the FF Series.

@billsonfire1 The battle system may look complicated visually but its actually a lot simpler than some of the earlier battle systems. All you need to do is change the paradigms so that you decide when to heal or when to bring in the heat. The AI does the attacking for you

@billtree52 It still has linear sections, like a)any Final Fantasy has and b)the Gran Pulse area in Ch 11 FFXIII did, but now there is much more area exploration, side-quests, side-stories, hidden areas, open areas, etc compared to XIII. Also, having locations set in several time periods (due to time travellll!) helps.

I've played a number of FF games and enjoyed them immensely but 13 was terrible - possibly the worst JRPG I've ever played. The characters were irritating, the game was way too linear and it ended up just being plain boring. Sure it looked nice but that was about it. I'm completely confused and shocked that they'd make a sequel to it.... I was hoping they'd brush it under the carpet and go back to their old, great standards.

@Swoop2UK I'm in Ch 11 in XIII and it's much better than most of the (lackluster) previous story/game, and I enjoy the greater openness of it. I really enjoyed the XIII-2 demo (catch it on PSN and XboxLive) so yeah, suck it. lol. I have XIII-2 preordered and I'm not ashamed!

@Infernofury Yes. They have compete access to the level system though (and all the roles), and there are 150+ monsters for the 3rd character slot. Lightning is only playable in the initial prologue tutorial (lamely..), and Snow is a guest character for a bit. On the bright side, you can make a 3-chobobo monster team!!

@rezzmenow Not necessarily. Seeing as how it's a cliffhanger in a strange story of mechanical gods, time travel, and cosmic power - it's not like she's 'dead dead'. FFXIII was Lightning and Snow saving Sarah, and XIII-2 is Serah and Noel trying to save Lightning (so a reversal). The potential concluding XIII-3 could flip that back, with a full party again, and Serah possibly not being completely lost. Moogle can do whatever though. lol.

@ztaylor82 IMO it's better. Putting a Commando level up on a small node is just a generic level up in all stats, while putting it on a large node would give you a specifically larger boost in Strength instead. This system actually allows more unique development than XIII, but also sort of even XII and X (because you can't truly max out your characters, and they are capped based on your crystarium choices).

@7isanumber Isn't the KH3 team busy with the 3DS KH? Plus Versus has been in development for 7 years and I REALLY want them to finish it before they move to a huge project like KH 3. Besides, Versus has similar gameplay to KH minus the Disney characters so I think you should be excited for it as well.

Why so many complaints about the demo? I liked it. Call me crazy, but I liked XIII and I've been excited for the sequel since I heard it was coming out. From what I got from the demo, the soundtrack seems like it's going to be even more awesome than XIII's and though the whole "capture a monster and train it" thing was confusing at first, it's not horrible. At least it puts the team number back at three... I was a bit bummed to see only Serah and Noel. :/ I'm hoping Sazh will make an appearance

this game rocks! Lightning looks so much more badass then before but the same can be said for snow as well and serah looks just plain awesome. Basically all of the characters both new and returning from the last game look better, graphics look stunning to me. I love this series so much,thirteens story will be the best by far to me of all of them.

You do know that they all (including the so-far exclusive PSP FFXIII Type-0) all take place in the same overall world, with l'cie, fal'cie, the same 3-4 major gods, crystal powers, etc? Learning more about XIII world is learning more about the XIII Verses world. Just the tone and gameplay are different.

@VampireDude111 Each of the Final fantasy do not have any relation to each other. They all take place in seperate worlds with very different settings and characters. This one is one of the exceptions being the second XIII. You'd have to play thirteen first to understand this game.

13 is good, but it decided by changing things by being the most linear of the Final Fantasy games, frankly I'm not actually finished with the game sadly. Haven't played it since that big boss in Chapter 16 I think it is? Its the boss that has it's own music, fucking huge and some dude transformed into it

@Sora1123 That would be Chapter 9 (there are only 13 chapters). Ch 10 is underground in a Pulsian 'Ark' of weapons, then you escape the world and land on Pulse for the super long 'open world' Chapter 11 (post-game is here too, super bosses etc). Ch 12 is back on Cocoon in the captial of Eden getting attacked all over, and Ch 13 is the core of Cocoon with the last and final bosses.
