Hard to believe that this is the song that started Phil Spector's downward spiral. Such a driving chorus. Now he's getting butt-raped in jail, too bad.
@Whoadell But although it flopped in the U.S., it sold BIG in England. And it was the thing that gave Tina exactly what her career needed that she has now. International appeal. :)
i take it most of you have seen the film, a lot of things in that film where untrue about ike, that considered, this song shouldn't have been credited to Ike & Tina, it's Tina's song, phil spector paid Ike 25,000 dollars just to have Tina sing this, and what a job she made of it
i can honastly say tina turner is my roll model she stayed strong when ike had abused her all those years she is amaising in everyway and she dosnt look a day over 40 she is so talanted i wish to grow up as sucsesfull and as beautifull as her xxxxxxxxxxxx and u can tell her i said that i wish to meet her in real life omg that would make my world ps im girl im just using my cusins acount xxx
@himhh in actuality, Phil Spector paid Ike Turner $20,000 NOT to sing on the original, because Phil wanted to promote the song and Tina's voice and showmanship as well . It was this song that caused Phil to go in sort of a tailspin because the song did not perform as well on the charts as he had hoped and became discouraged for a few years before he went back to producing again.
@airplaneguy53 Yes, the buzz in '66 was it was "too black" sounding or "too white" sounding for certain U.S. radio stations and therefore, didn't get the airplay it deserved. Still, it went to #2 in England. I never heard this mix before. The strings are mixed much higher than other versions I've heard, even more than the version on Spector's "Back to Mono" anthology from '91.
I did not know this song by Tina Turner,I just have heard The Animals version.i like very much it,but that by Tina Turner is simply WONDERFUL.It makes me so good.Thank you dear Tina Turner!
@jammmon um what? Let me see. Sexist? How, by recognizing a pioneer of rock and roll and telling the TOTAL truth? NO ONE would have heard of TINA TURNER if he hadn't discovered her and married her. PROVEN FACT!
As for homophobic... um what? Did your brain short circuit or does Tina munch rug now?
Nazi? Um, ok, didn't realize that Tina was a Jew as well...
i must admit, i like pia toscano's version of this better, i think its a little more interesting, the notes she hits are stronger sounding, and less .... shouty? i suppose, because tina sounds like she yells all the notes when pia sings them... JUST MY OPINION GUYS!
Other notable covers of "River Deep, Mountain High" were done by Darlene Love as well as the duet arrangement by The Supremes (Jean Terrell on Lead vocal) w/ The Four Tops. The most recent recording was the abbreviated duet arrangement used on Fox's "Glee".
The movie is essentially correct. Phil Spector produced this recording. Not only is Ike not on this recording ( he IS on the LP of the same name, just not this track), but he was not even allowed in the studio during the sessions with Spector. Whether Ike truly liked the song or not is debatable. However, a more up-tempo version (arranged by Ike) was recorded with both Ike & Tina later and incorporated into their live act. Tina's more recent solo recordings of it are closer to the original.

@tinatunerworld You're right, they did perform this song together. In 1966 british producer Phil Spector asked Tina Turner to do River Deep Mountain High without Ike (a keyscene in the movie Tina - What's Love Got To Do With It) :-)
@himhh Yes you're right. That's why i was sure because i no in the movie she recorded it by herself but i have seen her and ike perform it together numerous times. Thanks for getting the truth tough!
@tinatunerworld i had this on 7"single passed down from parents ect and the copy i had was by ike and tina turner on the label i think it was on the london records label but i may be wrong
@tinatunerworld The producer was mostly Phil Spector and he forbade Ike to even sing a note in the original. At that time perhaps he was not a fan of beating your wife.
@himhh Ike was mentioned on condition that he did not sing in the original. But like Tina made Proud Mary her own, took it from Creedence, Celine Dion does this much better. River deep will become her song. I would never have believed it,I hate to say it. But listen to her. She puts in a nice line about Tina. The difference is amazing. May have to do with better technology, though. But Dion's version is now the standard. Almost unfair.
It might just be me but does this song seem just a bit stalkerish to anyone else?

This song was NOT very popular in the U.S. when it came out. It has since had a little following. I like it though.
