@himhh in actuality, Phil Spector paid Ike Turner $20,000 NOT to sing on the original, because Phil wanted to promote the song and Tina's voice and showmanship as well . It was this song that caused Phil to go in sort of a tailspin because the song did not perform as well on the charts as he had hoped and became discouraged for a few years before he went back to producing again.

@airplaneguy53 Yes, the buzz in '66 was it was "too black" sounding or "too white" sounding for certain U.S. radio stations and therefore, didn't get the airplay it deserved. Still, it went to #2 in England. I never heard this mix before. The strings are mixed much higher than other versions I've heard, even more than the version on Spector's "Back to Mono" anthology from '91.

Other notable covers of "River Deep, Mountain High" were done by Darlene Love as well as the duet arrangement by The Supremes (Jean Terrell on Lead vocal) w/ The Four Tops. The most recent recording was the abbreviated duet arrangement used on Fox's "Glee".

The movie is essentially correct. Phil Spector produced this recording. Not only is Ike not on this recording ( he IS on the LP of the same name, just not this track), but he was not even allowed in the studio during the sessions with Spector. Whether Ike truly liked the song or not is debatable. However, a more up-tempo version (arranged by Ike) was recorded with both Ike & Tina later and incorporated into their live act. Tina's more recent solo recordings of it are closer to the original.

@himhh Ike was mentioned on condition that he did not sing in the original. But like Tina made Proud Mary her own, took it from Creedence, Celine Dion does this much better. River deep will become her song. I would never have believed it,I hate to say it. But listen to her. She puts in a nice line about Tina. The difference is amazing. May have to do with better technology, though. But Dion's version is now the standard. Almost unfair.
