There are several types of medeling.

Splines, Nurbs ect... the best you can do it's learn all of them to choose ur favorite one and to learn which one is better with what type of character or objet you want to modeling.

Then, i recommend you to look for it on google. Type in something like ''3dsmax modeling tutorial'' and you will find some interesting answers

i'm currently making my way through online tutorials (making light sabres, bombs, blowing up earth etc ;) ) in 3ds max and i'm just wondering how did you do the lazer between your hands at 0:35? glowing materials i get all that stuff, but what object did it glow from? i'm looking to recreate the lazer between 2 engine pods of podracers...

simply add the "noise" effect to your lazer-object which should glow and it will wobble like a electic ray. maybe you have to play with the noise-settings to get the effect as real as possible.

These would probably work better if you DID use After Effects. Its a much easier tool to make stylized effects like these.
