He's pretty insightful. I was surprised, however, that he stated that many artists overvalue their importance by thinking the world will simply pay them for their service of music. After working in studios for awhile, you begin to resent the megalomaniacs known as musicians. Not all of them, of course, but enough...
A lot of people says he's a sexist dick. Dunno him personally, but as we talk about his opinions on music, they're very accurate. Even he's a sexists, it doesn't change the fact he's smart guy.
@Justeatmytoast His recording studio has a website with a message board that he posts on all the time. The guy isn't sexist at all. Check out the site and you will get an even better impression of the guy.
@AtorTheFlyingEagle I didn't meet that information, so sorry. I just heard a lot of people had a problem with him about that fact, Kim Deal, Courtney Love...a lot of people said they have this problem. Also I've red shitty Michael Azzerad's book and there was a lot something about it, especially from Kurt's opinions. Sorry. That's why I didn't tell he is - I've never met him and I can't say something just because of what I've red or seen.
@Justeatmytoast Sounds like yellow journalism to me. Kim Deal? He has worked with the Breeders on their last couple of albums, so that is false. He has a caustic sense of humor, which people might not get. Still, check out his website wwwelectricalaudiodotcom.
@AtorTheFlyingEagle Hey man, music is a diffrent side than relations or something. Sometimes you work with someone you hate and the music does not show your relations with people from the studio.
@Justeatmytoast All and good, but Steve is personal friends with Kim Deal and the Breeders. On his website he started a thread about his then girlfriend (now wife) Heather playing marching cymbals on stage with The Breeders. This post is dated from June of 08. Kim Deal doesn't personally hate Albini.
An actual STARGATE/PORTAL-THING was caught on film in New Mexico. The footage can be found within the short-film entitled "SUDDEN PORTHOLE", which is parked at the PROJECT CAMELOT YouTube page (it's under the George Noory video).
I'm not selling anything…just trying to spread the word about the unseen-dimensions we find ourselves embedded in.
My BLOG @ samzurick*dot*com contains peripheral data regarding the movie and is where I reply to the "debunkers". THANKS!!
I met Mr. Albini back in 1986 on tour. Very cool guy and I think he gives good advice i(counter to the conventional wisdom) that ultimately leads any artist to a higher happiness quotient, However: I think that the claim that any artist should not expect to support Hirself on said art is practically true, but in principle Cataclysmic! If middle managers at Goldman Sachs can hubristicaly assume that their livelihoods (+!) should be (and are) subsidized by the Market, why not any random artist?!?
I don't agree with most of what Steve is saying aside from DIY as much as you can. Seems very cynical to me. I say believe in yourself, hone your skills and approach the business of music realistically. BUT if you think small, you get small. And it is a privilege to hear some musicians play, and that could be you one day. Steve's philosophy is like, "be happy and mediocre."
That's not what I get from this. You can take it as far as you can go. Some people just have more ambition than others. But I think the main point he's selling is control....you lose that, then you are stuck....
@6x7Grimmylover101 Right on. I see what you're saying. I watched it again. Don't get me wrong. I really like Albini's views on the music business, however, I feel like he's reacting mostly to people who want to be rich/famous more so than artists. I think a real artist doesn't need to be told why they should be doing art, they just do it. Anyone who does art for what they might get from it, is more of a manufacturer than a "real" artist.
@zbs28 Steve's accomplishments as a musician and as a recording engineer have been far from mediocre. The bands he works/has worked with are far from mediocre. He is just against the commercialization of music in the corporate world and the notion that music is defined in terms of 'careerism'.
its not important what he got paid for in utero whats important is that he made that record sound realy raw ....you can hear all the sounds very well...but thats just me ... love you all peace out........
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nirvana payed 2 million dollars to this fucker in order to produce their album and they even weren't happy with the results. and now he's giving lessons about how not to sell out. oh come on, shut the fuck up you bastard.
@Jojos25 I have no idea where you're getting these "facts" from, but Steve Albini's producer fee for his work on "In Utero" cost a flat total of $100,000. He even refused to accept royalties from the album's sales. And Nirvana, especially Cobain, were very satisfied with his work. The label didn't like the sound because it wasn't radio friendly enough, so they forced the band to have it remixed before they agreed to release it. So, in other words, you're an idiot. Do your research next time, ok?
@michaelaurand in a 1993 interview on 120 minutes nirvana were talking about steve albini. when krist and dave were talking about how the album says "recorded by steve albini" instead of "produced by steve albini", and how he seems to be "mr. ethics", kurt said that they gave him 2 million dollars. so that's it.
i like big black but this guy just doesn't seem to get the point completely.
@Jojos25 Are you serious? Kurt was obviously joking, did you not see Dave and Krist laugh? I have NEVER heard of a producer being paid a flat rate of $2 million to produce one album. Steve Albini was a moderately-known indie producer in 1993, there's no way in Hell a record label would give, or even loan, that kind of money to him. Albini told Charles Cross in Cobain's bio "Heavier Than Heaven" that his producer fee was $100,000 to record "In Utero" with no mechanical royalties. So THAT's it.
@Jojos25 Sell-out? Hypocrite? No. He's a producer. It's his job. Also, he loves music. He wouldn't be doing it (like he said in the video) if he wasn't happy.
@Jojos25 - Kurt said that yes, i've seen the interview, but Cobain was known to exagerate such things for COMEDIC value.
i.e. He was kidding around. That's why the band chuckles over his comment right afterwards.
Whether or not you like his attitude or think he "get's the point", he has been involved the music industry for 30 years now and continues to survive in it just fine, so he knows a thing or two that we can all learn from.
The way you worded it looks wrong, completely. When making facts, why leave out so many things?
Minor touches were made to the album, only 2 songs on the album were actually "remixed". And they weren't "forced" to do anything, Nirvana themselves, felt the album needed something more when they listened to Albini's mix.
@onestep2farclown Actually, nearly every track from "In Utero" was remixed or remastered, mostly to bring the vocals closer to the front since Albini usually de-emphasized vocals in his productions. Cobain wanted the album to sound raw and noisy as opposed to the tight, polished, overly compressed sound of "Nevermind," but when the DGC heard the first few demos from the sessions, they worried the album would be a commercial flop, and made the band remix it
@michaelaurand Those are the changes I spoke of. They brought the bass and vocals up because they were mostly inaudible or way too low. Those are tiny minor changes... and in the end, the record is better for it I think.. Like I said though, the only actual complete remixes were done to Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies. And later, Penny Royal Tea, but only the single version.
@michaelaurand- Well although you're mainly right, Nirvana themselves brought in Scott Litt to remix Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies. For a number of reasons, Kurt in an interview stated that the band had a fight with Steve over the vocals, because he tends to keep the vocals down very low and Nirvana are obviously a vocal band. On top of that Kurt hated Steve's production of Heart Shaped Box claiming it sounded like "An abortion hitting the floor". Kurt liked it, but felt it needed work.
@michaelaurand Officially Nirvana didn't like his mixes of some songs, that were too hard and noisy to listen too. So they mixed some of the songs again, for example like Heart Shaped Box, to make it more nice.
@johngoff There's like maybe a 100 acts in the States that can make a living out of it, provided the Pitchfork geekdom hails them. Otherwise they never pass the $1000-per-gig-mark. Not everyone turns out to be Wolf Parade or My Morning Jacket. Most peeps can scrape by if on intensive tour 3 months a year in Europe, but only if they don't get sick. Steve Wynn's wife had to go $4000 in debt only to provide him with dental (you know, maintain his instrument?) So yeah, it's pretty rough.
@johngoff well, as stated in several interviews, bill drummond never enjoyed what he did in the KLF. steve albini does it because he enjoys it. that to me is the difference.
I forgot to put my bike fender on and my ass got all wet and dirty. It's pretty itchy while watching this.
