The Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) forbade barbaric practices like matam, and he said: No harm may be inflicted on oneself.
Allah Almighty condemns the pagans for the barbaric way in which they would worship:
Their [pagan] prayer at the House (of Allah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands; therefore taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve! (Quran, 8:35)

I wouldnt call it a simple chest beating...its called mourning for Prophet Muhammed SAW Grandsons(Imam Hussain a.s) martyrdom in karbala(Iraq)over 1400 years ago and crying for his family who were tortured after he ws killed brutally, all in the name of saving Islam...it is the biggest day in Islamic History and will never be forgotton and we will always Mourne until the day of judjement.
i'm a sunni muslim and ive seen the mourning of the prohets grandson for the first time in this video. i'm not saying this is wrong or why are poeple doing it. As the sunni teachings state that it is not recommended to mourn after someone's death as this gives them takleef (pain) in the hereafter, but to celebrate the deaths of allah's beloved poeple that they gave thier lives for islam i.e. shihaadat (martys) they will recieve higher places in jannat inshallah.
