@HeraldMB Well, in saying "they were a mixture of add-libbing and the work of their writers" I think you're undermining Marx Brothers contribution. Or should i say you are one of these straights, Groucho had in mind, while dealing out. Besides Groucho was a man in his own writing.
Not true with Laurel and Hardy at the Hal Roach Studios-read about Laurel & Hardy-fellow actors and their directors on the Hal Roach lot said that many of their movies never came out the way they were written. Laurel and Hardy did a lot of ad-libbing and on-the-set improvisation.
I agree. The fives 5 are the best. Then they went more mainstream and the comedy started to go down hill. A Night ant the Opera is very good (but I dont think it's as good as the first 5). Day at the races is ok. Some classic scenes but a lot of crap ibetween the good bits. Room service is rubish. At the circus and go west have some funny moments but are not very good. This on is a bit better. But not a patch on the early days. Love happy is there worst. Even Grocho hates their later movies.
CLASSIC stuff...

The Marx Brothers were a mixture of ad-libbing and the work of their writers. It's a combintation, not one or the other. :)

I wonder why the guy just doesn't punch Groucho in his wise fucking wiseass mouth?

I've seen so many parodies of Groucho that after seeing the real thing it was kind of underwhelming. The sword fighting with Harpo was funny.

Well that's just because this film wasn't one of their major success. It just had some good moments. ;)

and all because the guy called him a clerk...
Groucho, genius.

"Smythe" -- this is one of my favourite Groucho gags. The guy really was a genius !!!

You might want to thank the writers of the screenplay for any "genius" coming out of actors' mouths.

Ok... I thank all the screenwriters of the screenplay for any "genius" coming out of actors' mouths. -- satisfied ?

this is one of the funniest scenes in this movie. You better get their first five films, (the ones with Zeppo)
although as their later films go, this one right here aint toooo bad.
its better than the Big Store, Go West and ROom service.
but yes,
the coconuts, horse feathers, duck soup, animal crackers, and monkey business. get them
