I love Shirley Verrrett, but this role is a mistake, This sounds like work for her.. The tessitura of some of this is high and very difficult...She was an astounding singer however.
@raymzi I was there. She was booed yes, but apparently from a group of Callas widowers, because she had said in an interview that Callas' high notes were not that good...
Same thing happened few months later when during a recital (always at la Scala) when she sang "Una voce poco fa", someone from the galleria shouted "Leave Rossini in peace!" and she began to cry on stage....!
@xafnndapp La Scala is notorious for it's bad treatment of artists, which is sometimes deserved and other times not. The loggionisti there can be especially difficult, and their approval/disapproval is not always based on the quality of the performance.
the first 5:15 is the trio from act 1 scene 2 of Un Ballo in Maschera. Amelia is asking the witch (Ulrica) for help forgetting the man she's in love with (who's not her husband) but from the corners, the man she's in love with (her husbands best friend Gustavo), and who loves her, listens in.
From 5:15 on though it's "Odi tu come fremono cupi" from the trio at the end of Act 2. Amelia and Gustavo met and expressed love, then Amelia's husband (Ricardo) arrives to tell Gustavo that assassins are coming. He offers to take Amelia (who is veiled so Ricardo doesn't know it's her) so that Gustavo can escape.
It's weird to hear Verrett as the soprano because she's such a formidable and amazing Ulrica I wonder why she would be cast as anything else. Though she still does a pretty good job.
Bravissimi! All outstanding! I need to find this complete recording! But why does it jump to the Act II trio? (I'm very happy it does) Who is the baritone?
She wrote about this in her autobiography, and from the way she makes it sound you'd think she really sounded a mess. She sounds fine. I don't understand why they would boo her. She sounds like Shirley Verrett to me! Hmmm interesting.
Stupenda!!!
