  • hey knivesandstuff im an amatur knife maker and im haveing trouble with the tips of knives because on my little belt sander it seems to just take the tip right off when im puting an edge on should i use a file or maybe a might higher grit belt? please reply

  • beautiful blade. sorry too hear they're eaten up the belts!

  • great looking knife Kyley!... what no motocross t-shirt today! WTF did the comments finally get to you mate??? i am just kidding! looking good, keep it up! i really like what i see!!!!

  • There are cleaning blocks for the abrasive which extend ints life. I was under the impression they were to clear away and lubricate for wood cutting, but perhaps they work for this application. I'd give a go at spraying the stuff with silicon lubricant, molybdenum disulphide, graphite or Teflon etc. There must be suitable cutting lubricants to speed the work and extend belt life. Oh, and a water spray if your belts can take it. Or keep switching belt suppliers until you find one that cuts.

  • @TheBeebopper I have cleaning blocks. They work more with woodworking. You have to remember that the steels are damn near as hard as the abrasives so its chopping all the teeth off the abrasive. I'm using the best belts you can get for this type of work.. its simply that Hardened Steel chews up belts fast. Most industries do almost all finishing work before heat-treat. Knifemaking is unique I think to be grinding large volumes of HT steel. lubricants wont work. the belts slipping is the prob.

  • @TheBeebopper If I could keep it cool with water it would help I think, but the mess in my workroom would be horrendous. haha. The reality is that I'll just have to use Fresh belts on HT steel, and use the Worn belts on pre-HT steel.

  • @knivesandstuff You know there must be a reason why the knifemakers still use whetstones in Sheffield, the home of working blades. : b

  • @TheBeebopper Well.. its not because they are working faster, saving time or making better knives.. :-P Its because they already had that stuff and dont want to spend money to upgrade.

  • @knivesandstuff Take a look at "A Sheffield knife" uploaded by pdprop and see how fast the removal of material is, he even gets a baulk of timber out to press the blade on the stone. Take a look at the (Wilkinson's) Dartmoor knife (aparently blades still available) or even the Israeli knife. There is no upgrade from those big stones, you're not going to put 1/4 ton of pressure on the blade with your belt grinder, but these men on the stones can. Quicker than a belt, without changing.

  • @TheBeebopper Seen them.. Go take a look at a KMG running at 7000SFPM.. it will grind a car in 1/2 in around 5 seconds.. mine is not running at high speed. That is a nice propaganda video.. but its not actually showing a start to finish on the grind. I can however visually see that its not going to be better than a modern grinder. cheaper to run sure.. not better.

  • how much are they going to be thanks

  • it's a clean cut knife that cuts clean :)

  • freakin' beautiful man! I cant wait to get my hands on the knives you are going to make for me.

  • Wow! It looks amazing Kyley....Fantastic mate. Have a rest man! You sound exhausted. Very happy to wait as long as it takes for mine...you put your heart and soul into these things and I appreciate that sincerely. I will pm you my UK address...

  • Looks beautiful man! I honestly think you were too nice selling them as cheap as you did, and I would pay more for the same stuff. No question! Its that good. As far as the fit and finish goes, I like it kind of roughed up looking because these are "users" and show pieces go in a display cabinet. I want to use my knives and Im sure others do too. Your stuff rocks man!

  • I appreciate your understanding of D2 heat treatment, variations, and how critical this can be to a blades performance. I never had D2 before, so it will be interesting to compare it with my 01 blades, but at the end of the day its all good expierience for us would be knife students........Enjoying all your video,s

  • The finish looks just beautiful, lovely looking grind, sorry to hear that the new grinder has,nt off set the cost of belt usage as hoped. Would more frquent water dipping during the grinding help when using the more worn belts. Any idea of much more per D2 knife you will have to charge per knife model...... great hard work yet again, well done Kyley.

  • @gernaneering After HT its getting dipped all the time to keep it cool. Worn belts just risk burning out the edge too easily from friction. I'm guessing that D2 may have to add about $35 per knife. I will have a better idea after I make all the knives and assess correctly how many hours I put into them.

  • I wish you Kyley good luck because you work hard in your knives to make better and better quality !

Happy Holidays to you and your family!

    Mike

  • Thats the mutts nuts mate !!!!

    Roll on the holiday season

    :o)

  • what a beauty! looks great!

  • @sunnyacres23 The main reason this appeared less clean cutting is simply because I have a thicker edge on it than the one I showed the other day. the knife is incredibly sharp. That double wall cardboard needs a thinner edge profile to cut clean. The costs shouldn't go out of hand on the batch.. They are just higher than I'd hoped for meaning I cannot sustain these prices for future runs.

  • @sunnyacres23 Every blade is a compromise.. and to be honest.. every one of these is handground so there is also likely to be variation knife to knife.. I'll test each one though to make sure each one is good.. but they will all be thinner or thicker.. etc. my test 2.2 is a much leaner grind and cuts like a paring knife.. :)

  • That is a great looking blade. I really enjoy watching the evolution of you knives and craftsmanship.

What do yo think of CPM D2 I heard its much easier to sharpen due to the cpm process and keeps the characteristics of regular d2.

  • @MrMike2blu Thanks. I cannot comment on CPMD2 because i cannot get it to try. I'd assume its better. But honestly.. it will still come down to the heat-treatment more than the steel. The steel really is secondary to the heat-treat. The CPM steels all cost significantly more money also so it comes down to cost benefit gain as well as anything. If the speed limit is 100, then a car that does 200 is luxury more than necessity because you wont get to apply it.

  • Yep, this one looks really nice man. I like it!

  • @mindsmirror Thanks. I'll reply to PM tomorow. sleepy.. lol

  • @knivesandstuff Sounds good, no hurry, I'm glad we're able to communicate with each other at all honestly. It's amazing that new developments in our technology has allowed us to exchange information with one another in real time despite essentially being on opposite sides of a planet which is suspended in outer space like a speck of dust, lol. Imagine trying to talk to one another 250 years ago btw! It would have taken months to get messages back and forth, if it could have been done at all. :)

  • can't wait for mine :)

  • @knivesfishwild they are coming. :)

  • @knivesandstuff classic answer...lol

  • i like the looks of it! Keep up the great work my friend!

  • @nicko978 Thanks

  • Beautiful - but does D2 require sharpening instructions? If it is a real chore to sharpen then it's a pain in the arse.

  • @sachsunkelt It seems just fine. As long as the original grind is good, maintenance should be no issue.

  • that's pretty light for a knife of that size....

  • @cam131313cam hehe.. the cKc Hiker was 1/2 this weight for the same blade size.. but this is a very different level of knife :) Its working amazingly well in my testing so far.
