This isn't a cover, this is all petty!! Petty: "That may be my favorite among my songs - just in terms of a piece of pure writing. I remember writing it very vividly. It was in the middle of the night and I was playing it on the piano at home in Encino. I was just singing into my cassette recorder and suddenly these words came out. I was at the point in my career where I was very much trying to find some new ground....so no, not a cover.. :)
A relative in his mid 40's recently died and this was played at his funeral I have to admit that I had never this song previously but it has a haunting air to it.
It gives me goosebumps and also makes me want to cry when he sings "There's a dream I keep having where my mama comes to me. She kneels down by the window and says a prayer for me."
My fav Tom Petty song! It's been become my personal anthem since moving to Indiana. This song taught me to be proud of where I come from, my individuality, and my southern accent!
Johnny Cash said that this should be the southern anthem and I tend to agree, being born here and will never leave again until the bury me under a cypress tree.Everything here is done with a southern accent ya dont like it leave it and we don't give a damn how ya did it in up there.
''A SOUTHERN PRAYER''.. LETS ALL PRAY TOGETHER FOR THE PEOPLE IN MISS. BAMA, GEORGIA, TENN, AND THE CAROLINAS, IT WAS A SAD DAY IN THE SOUTH YESTERDAY, LORD HELP THE ONES THAT LOST THEIR LOVE ONES, WHAT A TRAGEDY IT WAS... PEACE AND LOVE FROM THE PEOPLE IN CENTRAL FLA.
Rofl this reminds me of history class. Whether you like it or not we are all united get over it. The "Yankees" aren't causing you any harm. You country bumpkins ahahha.
be proud of wherem you are from no matter where you are from...just because someone sounds and look different than you don't mean nothing there are good folks out ther from all over the world...people are people no matter where they live
I speak , act , work and walk with a southern accent. And believe or not that drunk tank in Atlanta was a free motel room. And I worked them orange groves in Pasco Co.,Fla.,when the orange groves froze. My little girl was 10 months old and I was still wild as a stallion. Bury my bones under a cypress tree!!!!
This is expression at its highest, seldom attained. The line 'where I come from' is intensified with each new turn, as crying is intensified toward a crescendo. Even the 'Oh' at 3:47 is organically connected to the rest of the song. Incredible.
The line about the mother is heart-rending. What vulnerability! What honesty.
This is absolutely one of my favorite songs, Moves me to tears everytime I hear it. I was at 2 of his Mojo shows this year praying he would play it, but it wasn't, maybe bc it was NY. I was born in NY but I am half Georgia Peach, so this hits home for me.
For just a minute there I was dreaming, For just a minute it was all so real, For just a minute she was standing there...with me. Makes me think of my Step-Mother that I truly miss everyday, and when I dream of her at night. <3 AB <3
Awesome song, regards to the south. With a voice like that he has to have blood from Gods country. Cymru am byth.( Wales For Ever.) An older version of 'The South will rise again'!
New york is not all city! ive lived in ny all my life, never have even been to the city!!! Theres a place called upstate ny! Which is COUNTRY!!!! PROUD TO BE A YANK!!!
Beautiful song! I'm a Southern girl....born, bred, and raised in Alabama. I'm married to a Yankee transplant, turned Southern boy and he loves the south as much as I do.
I lived in Ca. most of my life, moved to SE Mo. 10 years ago and there is a difference in lifestyle and demeanor. Not all of it is positive but at 47 I sure appreciate slowin down and just appreciating life.
I love this song. I'm a transplanted yankee 45 years ago. Lived in Gainesville when Petty became famous. Still a Floridian. Wish I could've seen the Gainesville boy when he played there in Gainesville! Saw him play in Daytona a few years back. He's an original. He'll always be great.
alright will all the southerners stop saying shit about the north thats not true and vice versa. An accent is a way of speaking, not a way to determine if someones dumb or a redneck. And for the generalizations of the north: it is NOT all city and rude people. We may live a faster lifestyle but most people are very friendly and trust me go to the vast rural areas up here and youll see why you dont have to be from the south to be redneck.
A stately venerable sound on this song, or so it seems to me. I am a Northern Canadian (really north!) and am engaged to a lady in Texas. When we have her family over for dinner they all hold hands and say a blessing, just like how Tom describes it in his song. Yes they say 'Y'all' and many other Southern things and I love her for it. Her whole family has shown me extraordinary hospitaity and gives a very good image for Americans.
The pronoun "y'all" is not really a southern thing anymore. On the top 10 search results, I got a hit from a Bostonian, an Arizonian, even Australian (no, not that other "south") Kylie Minogue uses that term. But what bugs me most is a blogger from the New York Daily News who blogs for the YANKEES! (Live blogging, y'all) Really the "true south" is gone with the wind! The "liberal gap" between the other regions is closing. The southern accent is dwindling thanks to mass media as well!
Yeah this is all about accents. That's it. Fuck. I'll take Queen's English any day over this. Petty is great but if you drive 500 miles in any direction, the English you hear sounds like SHIT. But good on you, Tom!
@FairlyGrrl "queens english" reffering to old english i guess...well you do realize that the "southern accent" sounds more like "old english" though right? :P
@lightmyfir3 when you say that do u mean everyone from the us or just people from the north because to people that dont live here a yankee is an american. I bet you have never been to the north, people from the south think its all solid city when in places like upstate new york, pennsylvania and new england have gorgeous country sides.
@brownrider56 are you talking to me or this other guy cause im not the one generalizing...if people from the south saw some of the beautiful places up here that arent solid city than maybe the South/North division would lessen.
I listen to just about everything when it comes to music, but when I listen to Petty he's always blown me away with true life stories...im 28 years old and hes by far my favorite musician of all time, keeps it fairly simple, and keeps your head up in the game of life :)
Tom's right - if we are born and raised Southern, everything we do has a Southern accent. Southern is a way of thinking and a way of life, and we take our values and strengths (think Steel Magnolias) everywhere we go.
@PAGAN19 It's more a SONG. That goes on a RECORD. That makes MONEY. I've been to your 'part' of the world. I wouldn't give you two bob for it. You keep it, PWT.
I was a family friend for many years . I know Tom was thinking of Kitty( his mom ) and Earl (his dad ) when he sang this . Both are now deceased . Tom was very good to his parents .
I've been listening to Tom Petty since 1977. He's as good today as he was back then. I have two sons that went to UF in Gainesville so that makes Tom Petty's music more special.
My god, I´ve listened to Tom petty since I was eight, Im fiftheen now, but not until today I´ve actually found out how good this song is:) I have to listen to it once more!
Just for the record, I'm a New England yankee from an old yankee family. I've probably spent one month total in the south in my whole life. I don't make fun of anyone's accent because every accent is beautiful in its own way.
And I just adore this song. It's about roots, being proud of your roots, proud of who you are. Universal. Timeless.
@artichoke25 yea i am from alabama (south america) and i love ur accents there soooooo cool i aint never herd noe of ur accents untile my uncle came and met me he is from england.
@artichoke25 I'm a strange product. In 1605 the wealthy patriarch of my family arrived on the first ship to New Haven and served as a magistrate and deacon in both New Haven and New Jersey while continually expanding his family and his fortune. However somewhere along the line some foolish ancestor of mine named Job moved down to Charlotte in the midst of the Civil War and after all of that nonsense here I am in Georgia mixed with that bloodline and Southern gentry, and defected Russo nobility.
@artichoke25 Your words are like Donne's. "Therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." The bell tolls for all of us, Yankee and Cracker, Cracker like me.
perhaps the most UNDERRATED tom petty song. i fell in love with this song when the record came out and i was just a kid at the time. i play it as a jobbing musician in my act from time to time. many folks are surprised to learn that its a tom petty tune.
Yankees are technically anyone from the North (above Virginia) but its a derogatory term for people from New York and New England ("Damn Yankees") but in Europe it just means American, which is funny because a Southerner would take offense to it.
@briansane I read somewhere that a 'yankee' to the World at large is from the USA and in the USA a 'yankee' is from up north. In the north a 'yankee' is from New England and in New England a 'yankee' is from Vermont. In Vermont a 'yankee' is someone that eats pie for breakfast.
Amazing! Some of these comments! I'll choose political correctness, fairness, goodness over hatred, bigotry, discrimination anyday(and i was born and raised in the south). I don't care who has these qualities--that's the truth. You will never progress if you are proud of the negative southern past and habits. Start by choosing the way you talk! Not yankeee not southern just you!
i was born in new york and i moved down south at 18. 14 yrs ago. i was amazed how nice every one was too me. so laid back and fun. when i got back up north everyone made fun of my southern accent. nobody down south made fun of my northern one! nuff said.
All one can do is sigh! It's hard to describe what these people have meant to me musically through the years. Mr.Petty himself is of course "the crush of my life" but he really needs the others too! We are all depending on the people around us, fortunately.
Southern accents and Southern ways - wherever I live I will never stop being Southern. If it sets us apart, so be it and y'all can just envy us. My heritage kicks ass. This song is my very heart and soul.
A heartbreaking, breathtaking interpretation I once heard is this line foreshadows the reference to a deceased mother in the next stanza. If so, Tom Petty is an even greater poet than I already believed.
I mostly listen to Southern rap but I like all kinds of music...and I LOVE this song! It almost brings tears to my eyes...I love Florida and the South!
Johnny Cash covered this song on his "Unchained" album, which Tom & The Heartbreakers was the backup band on. This is a song Tom wrote in the 80's sometime before The Traveling Wilburys.
southern..god love us or for no one else will..We do things a wee bit different than anybody else..but it is where we come from..bentmont tench is the glue what holds tom and the boys together...amen
It's OK if no one else loves us if we've God on our side. Don't get any bigger & badder than God :)
Mother has callouses on her knees.Praying for her only son. I can attest if not for asking & receiving God's help. I don't think he'd be alive today. He's Southern to the bone, & all that entails, good & bad :)
Yes, we do things a wee bit different than anybody else. Be honest though when standing against a foe. Rather have a politically correct Yankee, or a pissed off Southerner? :)

I've been listening to Tom Petty since 1977. He's as good today as he was back then. I have two sons that went to UF in Gainesville so that makes Tom Petty's music more special.

@pleasuremuffin In short I'm not sure what the hell I would qualify under.

@artichoke25 Today I'm a Yank! Them days I'd be death! I'd definitely I'd be under the black flag!!

@artichoke25 Your words are like Donne's. "Therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." The bell tolls for all of us, Yankee and Cracker, Cracker like me.

perhaps the most UNDERRATED tom petty song. i fell in love with this song when the record came out and i was just a kid at the time. i play it as a jobbing musician in my act from time to time. many folks are surprised to learn that its a tom petty tune.

are the yankees people from new york?
amoalalo 2 years ago
Yankees are technically anyone from the North (above Virginia) but its a derogatory term for people from New York and New England ("Damn Yankees") but in Europe it just means American, which is funny because a Southerner would take offense to it.
briansane 2 years ago
We refer to Americans as Yank's, it's not meant as an insult, i can assure you.
MITCHWILD 1 year ago 5
@MITCHWILD i alive in southern america....... and none of them ppl up north talk nothen like us its really funny any ways.....
crazyformisty123 1 year ago

I hate yankees, they say we talk dumb. I wish they could hear themselves talking. They must be appreciated up north. I don't like them down here.

i was born in new york and i moved down south at 18. 14 yrs ago. i was amazed how nice every one was too me. so laid back and fun. when i got back up north everyone made fun of my southern accent. nobody down south made fun of my northern one! nuff said.

All one can do is sigh! It's hard to describe what these people have meant to me musically through the years. Mr.Petty himself is of course "the crush of my life" but he really needs the others too! We are all depending on the people around us, fortunately.

check out Mike Farris' version of this...much more dramatic and emotional-very cool song by Tom

Southern accents and Southern ways - wherever I live I will never stop being Southern. If it sets us apart, so be it and y'all can just envy us. My heritage kicks ass. This song is my very heart and soul.

"for just minute she was standing there with me." his voice sounds so nice when he sings that line.
cattleforslaughter 2 years ago 18
@cattleforslaughter
A heartbreaking, breathtaking interpretation I once heard is this line foreshadows the reference to a deceased mother in the next stanza. If so, Tom Petty is an even greater poet than I already believed.

Isen't this a Johnny Cash song? Or atleast he sang it aswell...
soulseek1111 2 years ago
Johnny Cash covered this song on his "Unchained" album, which Tom & The Heartbreakers was the backup band on. This is a song Tom wrote in the 80's sometime before The Traveling Wilburys.
