Definite Tom Verlaine reference. They both use the mixolodyian scale, favored also by Clapton in Cream, Garcia in 60's & Hendrix from their love of droning sitars. The ending is like Sonic Youth meets Velvet Underground, all in the midst of a bouncy folk-pop song. Still like Killing Television version best. But this "Ashes" DVD version is strong too.
Blistering version of a great song! Always thought this song owed a lot to Tom Verlaine and Television and in this version Nels Cline makes a direct reference to Marquee Moon at 1:30.
