Every single Final Fantasy game has its own plot, characters, and gameplay. None of them relate to each other in anyway. Which to say, none of them are on the same time line (so Final Fantasy 8 isn't happening after Final Fantasy 7, nor will it EVER happen after Final Fantasy7).

The only exception to this is Final Fantasy Dissidia, which is basically the polar OPPOSITE of what I just said. Dissidia mashes every single protagonist and antagonist from FF 1-10 I believe for an all out brawl.
