Grunge is not a music style. There is no really grunge bands. Grunge is the name that Nirvana gave to their music, there are some simillers in the music of grunge bands but there is not pure grunge. Soundgarden in exampele is metallic grunge.

actually its the other way around, technically speaking. Grunge is early metal with hardcore punk and some other elements. Soundgarden is still REALLY FUCKIN KICK ASS! but they were kinda just caught up in the grunge umbrella

But Soundgarden by modern standards not only started earlier than Nirvana but released albums first, and got signed to a major label. If any band got caught under the umbrella it would be Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains.

Compare the fucking sounds of Alice in Chains with Nirvana, and you will find ZERO similarities. Nirvana merely capitalized on a catchy song and brought all the better contemporary bands down with them. I hate that fucking label when it's applied to bands like the aforementioned ones.
