  • @UTFort the reason something in his voice compels you to listen is because he's acting like he's reading to children. No severity in his voice, but a soothing book reader for kindergarteners.

  • What great advice and great insight into how radio works.

  • If you privatize I'll donate : )

  • Kevin Keegans Brother

  • Scott nice to put a face to a voice.

    I listen to you Always.

    Rob From Canada

  • NPR should stop taking our money to be Obama's PR station.

  • How to tell a story: +Be dull + Be boring + Be a monotone + work for NPR. Actually I like NPR.

  • What's with the fake microphones? Are we supposed to believe the mic is live, even though he's banging it, shaking it, scraping it without any of that being picked up by the mic?

  • @fjccommish

No, you are supposed to realize that Simon's workplace is a broadcast studio, and that lends authority to his claims about how to tell a story.

  • @got2bcash That would work better if he didn't bang the mic.

  • nice video. why do people hate public broadcasting? I don't believe anyone saw politics in this video.

  • @riterman1

Why do people hate public broadcasting?

would you go to a restaurant where the chef chews the food for you so what you're being served is chewed food with the chefs spit?

I love public radio but don't like my mind being forced fed with conclusions or political agenda. A reporter or host should stick to their job description and let the listener be the judge.

  • Scott Simon is one of my favorite radio hosts of all time. He's just has the best questions and funny retorts.

  • who looks like that Ironman actor

  • Great video ...looking out for more !

  • Where is the meat of your story? What is the point of your story? And remeber to keep it simple. And if you don't have passion about the story, drop it and find a story that you are passionate about.

  • I PAY FOR THIS SHIT? There is a disturbance in the Force!

  • Scott, have you found another job yet?

  • Scott,

For viewers interested in telling a story well, not following an agenda, your advice is perfectly stated. I reported broadcast news for 30 years and cannot recommend your storytelling points highly enough.

  • So strange for me to actually see him talking. I'm used to having my head half covered in a blanket and burrowed in a pillow on Saturday Mornings when my favorite radio show is on!

  • best said: no one is listening so why are you still talking. I'll have to remember that one.. Thanks for this upload. It is a gift to story teller wannabees.

  • excellent... I can't wait to start.

  • thank you for this

  • scribd (dot) com/nb812

  • Thanks, this is great.

  • I'm a professor of Mass Communications. What a great resource. I'll have my students watch this. It is great advice for any medium.

  • Scott looks like Robert Downey Jr. I only knew the voice before seeing this. From now on, I'm afraid RDJ will come to mind whenever I hear Scott on NPR...

  • @annacapa - maybe Scott Simon and NPR should come to mind whenever you see a Downey Jr. movie, instead?

  • LOL people be damned when they show emotions for those closest to them. I doubt that you choke up over these things or you would be too weepy to type your comment. Climb down off of your Dafur high horse honey and stop being ridiculous.

  • you know, you have a point there, although i was thinking more about the victims of US military lunacy than other tragedies that, it is true, should have me weeping all over my keyboard.

  • norfolkyngvie ... You imply that Scott imputes greater value to American lives than those of Bosniacs, Rwandans, et al. But your judgment is rooted in an "apples and oranges" comparison. Scott's (or any reporter's) personal reaction to an interviewee typically doesn't survive into the final cut because it doesn't advance the story, OTOH, the shuttle disaster occurred as WESAT was starting its second hour. What you heard was live and unfiltered. The two contexts couldn't be more different.

  • Gotta LOVE Scott Simon's voice ^_^

  • Thanks! Very well done and inspiring.

  • Are cineva versiunea în limba română?

  • Excellent content, but that was some seriously bad camera direction. What was wrong with just talking into a single camera?

  • Hah, I see Youtube is seeing how their site is afecting the Iranians reports and videos on the protest. The whole "social media" thing. You know what, I like it. More than that, I love it, very interesting information there. Thanks!

  • Terrific points for telling a great story, Scott. And it has been wonderful spending Saturday mornings with you for all these years now.

  • Nice ;D

  • yes

  • let light of future bless you all with hope and visions of best America, may you all hold new dreams and strength to make honor family and all America. Bless all who you who care for country, may you all gain everything

  • well spoken. Thanks

  • Did he died?

  • Great advice, Scott, but I hear the "don't use dependent clauses to introduce a name" rule broken frequently on NPR. Especially when introducing a soundbite by someone rebutting something just heard.

  • Actually, among the others being produced by the "Reporters' Center," this one's pretty interesting and the production is decent.

  • hee..it must be tough switching between 2 cameras while remembering what to say :P

  • This was wonderful. Thank you for providing such great information!

  • There's something about his voice that makes you want to listen. And heck, he's funny!

  • Global Warming IS a fraud and 31,000 scientists agree.

"31,478 American scientists have signed this petition, including 9,029 with PhDs"

    petitionproject . org/

"Media Ignore Al Gores Financial Ties to Global Warming"

    newsbusters . org/node/11149

    Any questions?

  • And 300,000 disagree.

  • Get my facts straight? Gore is completely wrong with the purpose of his presentation. It is based on wrong intrepertation of the data and overlooking the role of the sun in this entire global warming thing. And he did got the Nobel prize....so what do you mean?

  • The PEACE prize. No peer-reviewed science is needed to win that.

And what are your credentials as a climatologist to say data interpretation is wrong. Climate modelors indeed take the varying sun intensity into account.

  • Just read and listen to people who know and do not be such an moron.

  • I'm one who knows science and whom to "listen to."

And what non-germain posts these are on Scott Simon's describing how to tell a story; all from foaming-at-the-mouth anti-global warming types.

  • But man-made carbon pollutants are driving global warming.

  • I think that's true. I am one among many greens favoring nuclear power. The French have done it right in standardizing designs. In the stupid US, there are no two nuclear plants the same.

  • Though there is an environmental argument to be made against nuclear power. Entire communities in which nuclear power plants exist tend to have slightly higher levels of radioactivity. The resulting nuclear waste from the reactors have to be stored for tens of thousands of years before being released, and the accumulation of this waste with no way to immediately dispose of it is not exactly sustainable.

  • Coal is worse than nuclear power in spewing radioactivity, besides heavy elements like mercury. The amount of waste from nuclear power is relatively small. I love the way the US obsesses about rdioactive power waste and ignore that made by weapons production.

  • I can see nuclear power as an intermediate step between the current fossil fuel-dependent economy and a future green economy, but not the basis for that future economy.

  • You are correct. Fossil fuels come from sunlight many years ago. We have to start getting significant energy from current sunlight. There's a small tidal power station in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, and the Danes get about 20% of their electricity from wind.

  • And don't think I'm defending all climate models. As a group it's clear they are works in progress.

That's the nature of science. You see whether the model predicts correctly and if not modify accordingly. One test I would make is how did the model do in predicting temperature after the Krakatoa eruption.

  • Hmm, there are over 9,000 people with PhD's who are homeless, so what does that mean? Global warming is real. Need Proof? Just go to Seattle in January, no snow...got it?

  • "Global Warming - The Sun is responsible"

    watch?v=YuO2YfWDRsM

"LPACTV: Global Warming -- British for Genocide"

    watch?v=UcfeW4CedbY

  • NPR is all the world needs.

  • Global warming is a HOAX!

The media is lying to you!

Anthropogenic (man-made) global warming bites the dust, declared astronomer Dr. Ian Wilson after reviewing the new study which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research. The study entitled Heat Capacity, Time Constant, and Sensitivity of Earths Climate System, was authored by Brookhaven National Lab scientist Stephen Schwartz."

    tinyurl (dot) com/2udet9

  • Danger! Will Robinson Danger! Wal-Mart worker who lives with his parents spotted spamming youtube boards with bullshit.

  • csrocker101:

You consider a peer reviewed scientist that is published in the Journal of Geophysical Research bullshit?

By you comments it appears your the one who works at wallmart.

  • Here's a few reasons (not all) why you're a dumb ass:

    1) You're on you tube spamming bullshit on a video that has NOTHING to do with global warming

    2) 31,000 scientists? That is a TINY number compared to the scientists that actually agree and support the theory of global warming. I guarantee half of those "scientists" have some connection to big oil or vested interest in trying to silence global warming

    3) You're a white trash redneck

Did I miss anything? Probably but that should do for now.

  • The few scientists who deny global warming have, in fact, been proven to have had their research funded by front groups for corporations and other icky groups.

  • Can you belief that the nobel prize was given to ALBERT ARNOLD ( AL) GORE JR because of this fairytale of man-made global warming!!! This confirms the conspiracy. Nobel prizes are only given to people who have their science down. The purpose of rewarding him with this prize is to condition the common man for legislation or other reasons to come. Like the introduction of carbon taxes. This money will be used to finance war or whatever they want to do but costs serious amounts of money.

  • Get your facts straight. Gore was awarded the Peace Prize. I'm sure Begin and Sadat had prime scientific credentials when they won it in 1978.

  • Baysheer

  • These tips are great. Scott Simon was unknown to me, but he clearly knows what he's talking about.

  • life itself is a story whether it is written or not

  • Scott Simon should win a Pulitzer just for being Scott Simon. One of a kind. Conversational yet concise, comprehensive yet comprehensible.

With neither rabble rousing bombast of commercial radio or the casually elitist pomposity that infects many of his NPR colleagues, Scott Simon delivers. His journalism, on every level, is zen archery, effortless and on the mark.

We need a Scott Simon Institute, dedicated to the Simonizing of the civilized world. That's what we need. Hey, billionaires!

  • why this people not believe there is no god

    CoolNewYorker-n0o0o0oAllah- KashfAlhaqiqa-NooAllah

i hope from everybody to block him from youtube

  • Scott is the lede master. I try to channel him whenever I'm stuck on a thorny one and those ledes usually turn out to be my best. He's the man.

  • Go figure. A dude teaches us how to tell an interesting story, and it becomes a discussion about how evil the media is. LolGAHZOR FLAILING TAIL!

  • And yet, they get 20% tax dollors genius. Hm. Imagine that. Last I knew Foxnews didn't receive any tax dollars.

  • So public broadcasting, which gets money whether there is a Republican or a Democrat in the White House, Senate, or House is necessarily biased while Fox News, which receives money exclusively from right-leaning sources is not? Trying to follow the reasoning but I think it's your brain tumor talking...

  • haha, brad pitt having 7 or 8 by now =P

    golden.

  • All this discussion is meaningless. Billy Mays is dead.

  • Well said Scott! Thanks for sharing!

  • Go to my page and watch crazy vid. Nothing like it on youtube.

  • Why debate on bias? It's ridiculous. People like to watch news that compliments their ideals. News has a percentage of fact and that's all you can try to decipher and keep. There's too much out there that we don't know due to cover-ups and the privately powerful, that who knows exactly what is going on. Those who think they know what's happening in the world have absolutely know clue. They may know pieces, yet those pieces can also be misguided for the purpose of keeping you from something else.

  • News items are called "stories". That stated back in the late 1800's. So a reporter is only a story teller.

  • I was going to comment on some of the things being said, but then I realized people here are far too uncivilized and their monitors too drenched with spittle for me to really feel like I should say anything worthwhile.

People on the internet kinda need to grow up...

  • the title should be "How to Tell Stories... Because we dont Give you Facts"

  • I love how some conservatives are pretending that because NPR has a liberal bias, it is no better than Fox news because that has a conservative bias.

NPR is better than the vast majority of all non-print media. It just is. Comparing it to MSNBC, CNN, or Fox, is just absurd. Yeah, it's biased. So is the Wall-Street Journal and BBC. They're still good news sources. Network Cable news isn't news at all. It's infotainment.

  • I don't give a damn wether someone is "fair and balanced." No one is--if someone is claiming to be, he's lying (whether he's lying to the audience or just himself is another matter.) Have you ever experienced anything? Do you have morals, opinions, and a limited amount of knowledge? Then you're biased.

  • Like I would give NPR the time of day. I'm just here to tell you all how biased their politics are...stupid tax funded liberal radio (because they'd fail if they didn't get tax money).

  • because nobody knew they have a liberal slant? The slant doesn't matter, it's the quality of the reporting. NPR's is excellent.

  • NPR gets most of its funding from stations that buy their programs, from corporate grants and individual donors. Tax dollars pay for less than 20% of the CPB and NPR.

  • Mostly individual donors. If you (igglesgirl419) ever listened to Npr around each of their Pledging periods, you would hear the phones practically overloading with callers all over the country helping to pay for the station.

  • On the topic of "Fair and Balanced", it's no big secret that news organizations like NPR, CNN, and MSNBC have a liberal bias. These organizations don't claim to be "fair and balanced".

Unlike Fox News. They claim to be "fair and balanced" when it's obvious that they are not.

Where the problem comes is that it's core batch of nose-pickin, shit kicking, NASCAR watching yokels in the bible belt are too stupid to know the difference. They just believe what Fox News tells them.

  • You forgot to mention Southern white people. You must drill home the regional bias, why be so shy about your senseless hatred? If given the chance what would you do to them? You know, like your buddies did to the Jews when THEY not only had a chance, but had the rationale. You're an ass.

  • I wasn't talking about southern white people. I was talking about stupid people, that just happen to be from the south and also just happen to be Fox News viewers. Just because Fox News tells these people that any given story is "the truth", they take it for face value and think that it must be the truth.

Just because Fox News says it's "fair and balanced" doesn't mean that it is.

  • weesnaw

  • weesnaw

  • Again Fair and balanced.Give both sides of every story-What a thought!!

  • Love this, Scott, thanks. I'm including it in my list of media training resources

    DB

    PR Manager

  • what?

  • First: That game is really boring.

    Second: Spam!

  • I really just laughed when I read your comment. You say that National Public Radio is brainwash, and yet at least half of their programming is not the news. And even when it is the news, half of THAT is either just updates, their outlook on the news, or BBC's broadcasting through n.p.r. You really must have an extremely negative outlook on the world and your life, based off of the comment you posted.

  • Do you think NPR is fair and unbiased ? It is my opinion Npr is biased to the core know matter what they are updating . If it goes against the Party line ,it doent get aired ;Period . Just check out neena tottenburgs latest comments defending barack OBAMa.

  • Realistically, no news station in the United States is unbiased. Npr, however, is probably the least biased of all of them. Yes I am a democrat so their left view of politics and the world may strike my pallet more, but compared to the majority of news outlets in the country they are probably the one station that tries and succeeds at giving people just the news, and not all of the political bile that other outlets will give you.

  • yep. CNN isn't bad either.

  • @generalducttape I would agree, they try pretty hard

  • @generalducttape - NPR needs to go. I have no more patience with these pro-fascist bastards

  • @MAGNETGRUNT I think you should get a dictionary and look up the definition of facist. You have no idea what you are talking about!

  • @generalducttape This is about the art of filmmaking and story telling, why the fuck are you talking about politics

  • Probably because I was replying to a comment made a year ago, who claimed that "NPR IS BRAINWASH" and talked of bias and party lines.

  • WHat???

  • Mr. Simon;

Thank you for your many years of thoughtful, incisive reporting and analysis. Let me also say that I am embarrassed and saddened by so many of the inane comments that are posted below. Where do these people come from and why are they here? Wouldn't some of you folks be happier looking at porn or cartoons?

  • hmm, i almost feel motivated to be social now. thanks dude

  • 5345345

  • wow! Scott Simon rocks

  • fuck

  • Prejudice

  • Promotion or the glorification of journalists today is like an adoration of liars, all brought forth for the promotion of the Democrat party.

  • NPR ya "telling a story" sounds about right

  • This Journalism Center thing YouTube is doing is a pathetic attempt to shore up the defunct MSM. I say let the government bail them out, they will go bankrupt anyway, and we can wave goodbye to all their hate mongering misinformation and liberal bias.

  • awesome

  • NPR is fast becoming like the rest of American media---its intended audience is people in a nursing home, and everybody seems to know it except them.

  • This is a lesson that will be easy to remember.

  • this sucks xD

  • Great words from Scott Simon! The camera work was a bit goofy, but... that's another instructional video needed on YouTube...

  • vive

  • "The news in France is very bad."

If I heard that I'd walk away. Fuck France!

  • The YouTube comment section, always good for a laugh. There's just so much stupidity and mindless hate to go around.

  • Dude, I am anything BUT mindless. This is the first time I've ever written a negative comment on YouTube. I loathe this man. Do you loathe Ann Coulter? How about Sean Penn? How do you feel about anyone who speaks only to inflate themselves? I love NPR, I give it money twice a year, and I listen every day, but Scott Simon is full of S***, pure and simple. He condescends to everyone and everything he comes near. I am not stupid, I am not juvenile - I am OFFENDED by this arrogant blowhard!

  • Juan Williams is moving from NPR to Fox News. FOX?! What the heck?

  • he has always worked for both

  • I didn't know that. I don't watch or listen to Fox news much at all. Some say I should, to get the other point of view, but I KNOW their point of view... yuck!

  • lol. I don't watch Fox either. He also write a lot and I read that he worked for Fox in his bio

  • I like NPR

  • yew spelled yew wrong

  • Hey Scott. I've been listening to your stories on NPR for a long time and I really appreciate you. Keep up the good work.

  • i thought it was funny how there's more than one camera and he kept switching between them XD

    the redundance was funny.

  • God this guy is pretentious. The only NPR personality I don't like.

  • Really? You'd take Jackie Lyden or Susan Stamberg over him? That's a little extreme.

  • Believe it or not, pal. I'd listen to that dude from "The World" and Linda Worthheimer at an antiques auction ANY day over even a promo from the old Simon-says gas bag above.

  • Hey, relax man. I wasn't referring to your comment. I had a few others in mind when I wrote that.

  • This was a really good video

  • Now I have a face to add to that voice which fills me with rage.

  • Thanks Scott. NPR is becoming Fox news light.

  • Comment removed

  • This is ridiculous! Do we really need people to tell us how to talk about stuff? If you need advice on how to tell a story, you probably don't need to be telling any stories. I have an idea. If you need to say something, OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND SPEAK!!!!!

  • Hey, it's just advice on how to make a news story interesting. He isn't "telling" anybody how to do anything, he's just giving advice which you can take or leave.

  • Seems like The Obama Media empire is is everywhere now . I think Youtube Always was kind of an DNC Haven

  • Yeah, speak conversationally... that's pretty unusual advice considering the last eight year "empire".

    We've got a new decider person--uh oh.

  • I think you blame your entire miserable life on others . You sound petty and sophmoric . There a lot of hard evidence on media bias in favor of Barack ,and the Democrats . For starters John Conyers despicible Wife conviction on corruption is buried . For fun google conyers and school girl and check out the footage . Why is this not out there

  • Whoa! Thanks Scott:)
