This game has been a monumental step forward in proving that video games can be art. And while I don't believe that any video game in existence has yet reached the level of artistic from and aesthetic quality necessary to truly be considered a work of art, it please me that so many have come so close. It's only a matter of decades before it becomes a universally accepted and respected art-form. But I'm enjoying it as such right now, nonetheless.
@aeonfluxx100 Agreed. I downloaded this game a couple of days ago and it's just absolutely wonderful. I usually play the commercial game but this is just so colorful, bright and innocent, with some wonderful music in it. I can't figure out the part i'm at now though and I don't really get the storyline yet. They use quite expensive language anyway.
Do you know if there is something like 'Braid II' on the way or even a full game? I'd buy it withing a heartbeat, that I will...
@burnout159 my teacher found this song smwhere and played, i was hooked, but when my friend gifted me braid for me b-day i unterstood right away that i can learn this song on youtube:)so there u go a+:)
I guess we can always pretend that there really was a princess to save, in fact I'm gonna act like this atom bomb crap never happened and Tim was merely on a quest to rescue his good friend from a terrible monster....... Fucking bomb ruined everything for me.....
at the begging of the game this song was so beautiful and still is...but after i saw the ending tho beautiful it makes me very sad and gives me a small pain in my stomach but thats not it..it scares me too (but i cant stop hearing it over and over again)
I dont see the problem with liking different genres of games. Right now im piecing the puzzle together on World 3, 30 minutes later im gonna be fragging in bad company 2. Just because I like violent war games doesnt mean i'm tasteless :/ ...this game is art in every sense.
@BBeatMalaria well, they're art forms in their own respects. this is a more tranquil art form, whilst CoD is a more violent one. and have you actually sat down to listen to the call of duty soundtracks? Hans Zimmer composed the MW2 soundtrack, and DAMN is it good. Sean Murray's Composition for Black Ops is nothing to roll your eyes at either.
@EpicBunty i don't understand why you people get so upset if some people dislike the posts.I see that in almost every post lately. Youtube is a video uploader site where people can freely comment on whatever they want however they feel like it. Yes, this wonderful music is not liked by 4 people. Why is this a problem?
@devilhunterred heh, thanks for summing up 2/3rds of the gaming community's first words when a game that's not CoD is shoved in front of their face...the other third is playing good games like Braid.
ps: For people saying its Spanish.... well parts of Spain are very Celtic!! There is a strong genetic link between the north of Spain and the west of Ireland (where their armada foundered). You can see it in the features of the men in both areas still. Catalonia shares many properties with Ireland and other Celtic areas. I would consider them closer to us than say, Anglo Saxons.
Much of Celtic music has similarities in phrases. I'm sure there is a word for them but riffs and sections that would be considered "signature" phrases. The Oileann pipes soaring, the deep bass drum beating a march, the fiddle layered on top. Its a style which is both recognisable and evocative. Its very primal and even in this Irishmans my liberal, modern heart makes me want to defend my homeland. And this is a simply beautiful example of it.
What a beautiful little game this is, and with onr of the most haunting soundtracks ever in a game, for £10 this game had me hooked over a full weekend towards the end of 2008, as with all the best things, it's simplicity is it's key feature.
@jjy9493 Not exactly. It is multi-layered and with more than one possible interpretation in some places.
...but even when considering the one you've mentioned (which is indeed strongly accentuated) - the topic may be violent, even genocidal, etc.; but the way in which you treat that topic doesn't necessarily need to be violent or depressingly dark - at which point Braid succeeds quite nicely.
Well, yes, I'm pretty much being CaptainObvious in here, sorry :/
@Nuthriz Braid is written in prose, poetry is written in verse, so i wouldn't exactly call it "poetic".
As much as i fancy prose, i don't think "true ending" is as much an interesting way to put it as it is a correct way to put it. You get all the stars, you unlock the "true" ending, the "final" ending, the "i beat the game fully and here's my prize" ending. Just like the "true" ending in RPGs. Hell, even certain Silent Hill games, which had multiple endings, had one canon one...
@RealJollyRoger ...without completing the game 100%, you don't get the full story of it. Imagine the last chapter being left out of a book, although it ends on a cohesive note.
As much as i'm sure you appreciate Braid, this structure is very cohesive and nothing new to gaming.
If you really don't like "true ending" (the common term in gaming), then we can go with "complete ending" instead.
Look it up on youtube, you'll find the videos with the books you get.
@RealJollyRoger I do know the hidden ending. I still do firmly disagree with you here.
1) Braid written in prose <- a poetic prose, I would call it. It is not just a novel-style of writing, undoubtedly being something beyond it.
2) Braid has one ,,True" ending, comparison with other games confirms that <- for me comparison here serves almost no purpose at all. Braid is Braid, something individual and exotic.
@Nuthriz The star ending is indeed shown most clearly, but having read the texts encountered throughout the game a few times, I would oppose the stance that everything not-clearly-referring-to-the-star-ending is to be considered just a veil for it. The star ending could be argued to be the.... :core:, central message of the game - not, however, to the point of invalidating other stories/messages deducible from this creation.
@Nuthriz I would conclude that Braid has - just like fine poetry - something different for each recipient to give. To reduce it just to the StarEnding sense... is just barbaric to me (no offense intended).
@Nuthriz Ok, here's the problem with this again. You're putting poetry/verse on a higher level than prose, as if verse is somehow more artful than prose, or more worthy. Briad isn't written in verse, so it is, definitionally speaking, not poetry. "poetic prose" seems kind of silly to me.
And now you get mad at me: as much as i liked Braid, i would definitely say that it had a lot of purple prose.
1. poetry > prose <- I didnt't quite intend to make it sound that way... but I guess it could.
2. ,,poetic prose" <- it pretty much exists and I didn't make that up. It's hard for me to find english examples for this genre on the spot though, such things tend to be a bit rare sometimes - but I would definitely say that Braid could fit that category, even very well.
@Nuthriz 3. Well OK. It indeed can be said to be the... central message, the one that is most explicitly accentuated.
4. regarding comparisons - in the process of comparing there is something to be gained, but I usually dislike it quite a bit due to what can be easily lost in it. Braid - for me - is special in a way that makes me want to avoid classifying/comparing processes... but this is deducible from my ,,poetic attitude" towards it.
@Nuthriz ...and (5) ;p - I..... I... oh come on, I don't really get mad at you, I just got slightly mad at a couple of thoughts of yours; now, aren't those, like, err, different things? Please don't make Derpy sad... ;)
....also (5?:p).... purple prose..? haven't heard of such naming, but there indeed are many things in English still hidden from me...
@Nuthriz Oh, oh! this would make number 7 I guess - I just googled it, and ,,my" concept is more professionally called ,,prose poetry" - uncle Google even tossed out a wiki link right amidst the top ones ;p
...and the number that no Discworld wizard should ever articulate, thus omitted - a *reciprocative hoof* all the way, Certainly ;)
@Nuthriz Clearly, no work is just about one thing. Braid has more common themes, but yes, absolutely, -positively- we can identify the central message of the game.
concerning "the comparison here serves almost no purpose at all," why? If it can't be compared to its peers (peers i never even named), then what can it be compared to?
I enjoyed Braid, but it does NOT defy comparison. That's ridiculous.
@Maphysto i know what you mean man...but the fact that there isnt that many games like this (with suck plot) and i guess thats why it's so special too us..so im glad that this games are rare you know?

@Winduct
I agree, we need more art.
But are current games really violent? I don't think so, they are boring and violence which they contain is non-reflective.

@Kimizefa I actually never liked that bit: kinds of interups the calming flow. It is very well done, though.

4:30 and on fits the feeling of problem-solving when going for some of those jigsaw pieces. By the time you hear that part of the tune, you know you got a conundrum.
