1995 - last Tour without EPO: 1-Indurain, 3-Riis. 1996 - first Tour with EPO: 1-Riis, 14-Indurain. I´m sure that Indurain knew what was happening in 1996, but his career was done, and his prestige would be in ruins if he was caught. So he tried to win clean again...and he discovered that never more it will be possible. That year he said goodbye.
@LittleGodOfGods (1) From “I don´t agree you” to “you have no clue” there´s the same difference that from intelligence to arrogance. EPO started in 1977, but in labs. In the first 90´s, cyclist still used corticoids (Sean Kelly, 91), steroids (Jesper Skibby, 91), stimulants (Lennie Kristensen, Jesper Worre, amineptine, 92) growth hormones and testosterone (Jesper Skibby, 92). Why? Because first cyclists that used EPO died (Johannes Draaijer, Joachim Halupczok).
@LittleGodOfGods (and 2)... Cyclists that have admitted to have used EPO in the first “wave” in the 90´s, said it was in 1996 when they started to take it because then EPO started to be “trustable” (Rolf Aldag, Filippo Simeoni, Erik Zabel, Udo Bolts, Bert Dietz, Bo Hamburger, Brian Holm). If you have PROOFS (not clues) that deny this declarations, you know what to do.
This is the final time trial of that Tour - the first one was much closer because Indurain was a bit tired from the attack he made near Liegi the day before.
flot kørt, men han har selv indrømmet at han har taget epo, er lidt skuffet over det, men der er heller ikke noget grund til at gøre et større nummer ud af det.
caddel evans will perhaps join team css saxo bank, because he is unhappy in silence lotto.
Ok guys, I changed the description as your right - he wasnt that close to beating Indurain. He did do okay though, especially considering that Indurain was probably one of best time trialists ever.
@CadenWolves At the first TT that year in Seraing, Riis was 5 sec ahead of Indu 5k before the finish line, but missed the victory by 12 sec at the end - he had no info about the last steep climb and got no water for the last 20k.
I highly doubt that. Doping can add maybe 10% to your performance, it cant make you a world class cyclist if you're not already up there. I am not at all defending what Riis or any other righter did during that period, but you have to put into perspective that probably 80% of the riders at that that were doped.
@CadenWolves riis rode with hematocrite of 65% the guy couldn't climb for shit before he started massively using epo. same with ugrumov who started becoming a climber at age 35!! the storys are legendary of how doped they were they had to be woken up in the night and been put on the rollers to prevent bloodcloths, so thick their blood was from the epo, this all changed in 1997 with the 50 rule. riis then suddenly got a lot worse, also riis before poe(1992) could never climb.
True. He was using EPO, which has a maxium 10% effect on your oxygen level. Also,he didnt have hematocrite of 65. That was a rumour going around, but never prooven.
10% effect on your oxygen level is not equal to 10% better performance!!! It cause an EXTREMELY HIGH better performance, especialy in an anaerobic sport like cycling!!
It prooven that EPO can enchance your performance by 50% BUT if you're an elite athlete its doubful it could go any higher than 13%. I'm not arguing that Riis didnt cheat. He did, but it wasnt a bad rider turning good over night because of EPO. Lot of it had to do with really hard work too.
Erm, you do realize what 13% means when you're competing at the top level? It means beating your competitors by minutes. There's a reason times in the 90s and 00s were a lot faster than now and before.
At the fair riders at the time amount to how many?? I dont defend Riis. He was cheating, which is wrong. But pro cycling was at that time completely corrupt and Riis was just part of a bunch.
I highly doubt that. Doping can add maybe 10% to your performance, it cant make you a world class cyclist if you're not already up there. I am not at all defending what Riis or any other righter did during that period, but you have to put into perspective that probably 80% of the riders at that that were doped. It doesnt make it more right, but there's no reason for saying Riis wouldnt have done well anyway.

@ermigue You have no clue. EPO started in the early Nineties. Indurain, Ugrumov, Rominger, Zülle, Chiapucci all used it.

ALL the tours since 1991 have been a competition of who is able to win taking dope and using EPO and get away with it.

Before Festina scandal, drug was free for all, inspection was virtually non-existent. Not only in Spain.

If times were generally faster than now, then what you're saying is, that Riis was competing on equal terms. Fair assesement, I'd say.

On equal terms with who? The riders of the future? Not on equal terms with those who were trying to race against him fairly at the time.
