The Californian unemployment rate is roughly 12%, and I know that strawberry growers hire almost anyone that's qualified because it helps them harvest faster, yet there are few people who aren't Mexican who go get those jobs.

it is illegal for Americans to get paid less than $7.25 an hour (hence the term minimum wage). If an employer can get someone to do that job for less, they will.

See, there's something known as "minimum wage" it means that, by law, all employers must give LEGAL American citizens at the very least $7.25 an hour (and min wage may increase eventually).
However, if there is an illegal immigrant who is willing to do that job for $2.50 an hour, whom do you think the employer will hire?

My dad works in the strawberry farming industry (which, I warrant, you'll agree has many immigrant workers), and I know for a fact that they aren't being underpaid. I don't know about other industries, and I'll admit it, but I do know that people who hire immigrants (at least the ones my dad comes in contact with) pay them full wages AND check immigration papers to ensure they're hiring legal workers.

BUT he targeted the employers who willingly hired the illegal immigrants. He fined them immensly, so almost every employer immediately layed off their illegal workers.
That caused nearly everyone of them (all that were employed at least) to leave the city.
So that proves, to me at least, that they simply come here for cheap labor, not for citizenship.
