For everyone who clearly recognizes the travesty that the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is, you may wish to enjoy the first three paragraphs of Sponge Freddie Speaks, the August 19th 2011 entry, called "The truth about Duke Nukem Forever." :)
I wasn't into Rush by this time, especially beacuse a lot of it, this song included, was descendant of mature New Wave and Pop 80s elements. BUT, that main verse riff almost presages a lot of 3 Doors Down.
At this point Rush are outrageously conspicuous by their absence from the Hall of Fame...it it fitting and perfect, as it should be. It makes the entire Hall a laughable entity. The Hall, in trying to bury their heads in the sand, have given Rush even more strength and power than could have otherwise been possible. Thank you RR Hall of Fame...
Peart's the reason Rush isn't in the obviously useless Hall of Fame. He made the "mistake" of writing lyrics based on the works of conservative author Ayn Rand. Liberals are simply too closed-minded to handle any Rand-related material, and critics are diehard lefties. A commenter before me wrote "Jesus.. Ayn Rand, come on guys get real".
Their musicianship is as good as it gets, but it doesn't mean a thing because they sang a few lyrics that make liberals uncomfy. Closed-minded losers.
I listened to Signals when I was 13 and was blown away...in retrospect... I think their lyrics sometimes are rubbish.... some of the political opinions are unsound (Jesus.. Ayn Rand, come on guys get real)...they can be awfully pretentious and pompous. But who ferkin cares when you have musicians of this quality. I could listen to rhythm sections like this till my dying day and probably will. I hope this makes sense..I have been drinking vodka.
yeah I didn't like that whole ayn rand connection either, but Neil said it was just "a phase", even though they still have a libertarian slant they've definitely changed their ideas over the years.
Even though Presto was generally a soft album, it sure was fucking good, I don't care what anyone says. Presto contains some of Rush's best unknown songs.
@Delgift Before I started collecting their albums, I had the greatest hits album: The Spirit Of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987, but if that were REALLY a greatest hits, i figure that they shouldve made it a box-set of all published albums... I havent heard any songs that I havent liked.
My favorite album is Moving Pictures, which i just got the Deluxe Edition of. Another favorite is A Farewell to Kings.
@rodge2001 Sorry, I don't feel that pain anymore because it's actually not as hard as it sounds lol, I mastered that beat months and months ago, it's in many of their songs. Alternate R L R L... Hit the hi hat with your right hand then light on snare with left then snare with right then hi hat with left then snare with right then snare with left and repeat... Oh, and make sure to open each hi hat hit... I hope that helps. :D
Remember when I first heard the song at the time. The intro blew me away, the song and lyrics were powerfull. Pity most of the other songs still don't mean shit to me today.
However; chain lightning, available light and presto are great 90's songs. Productionwise I also like it a lot. Neil's snare sounds so tight and crisp
Billy 'the Goat' Thompson sold me a dodgy cassette of the album a couple of months before we went to see the Glasgow concert in '92 (yes, we still used cassettes in the 90's). How's that ear hair problem, Billy?
My favorite track starts on the album entitled - RUSH and ends sometime in the distant future ! And I really like all the changes & experiments over the last 40+ years! Done for the sake of artistic musicianship and NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!!
@TheBgaddy ive been a drummer since i was 12.im 49 now,and i have played all types of music.most of the time for the money.but i have played different material just for the sake of seeing if it would be fun or not.a lot of times it was a blast! but some times it just really sucked.but, thats the life of a musician.
I was trying to play bass to this. Notice the word "trying". I got the timing at the start wrong. What I thought the tempo was was completely wrong. I was half-way through the song, I had not messed up the bass once, but it sounded weird to me. I stop playing and realize I was about 2 minutes behind.... Don't know how you do it Geddy, but it's pretty frickin' amazing. :D
It's real simple folks. Neil Peart is THE most profound lyricist in Rock & Roll. His lyrical content actually means something. Something with redeeming value that we can all learn from. Absolutely Brilliant !!!
@jaguaron007 That's funny, In my humble opinion, this is the only song on this album worth a damn. Just goes to show you how wide of an audience Rush affected.
Presto as an album is just so UNDERrated. Except for "The Pass", has so little representation live, yet this is the bridge (along with Roll The Bones) that takes them from Hold Your Fire over to Counterparts, from synths to totally guitar driven. Show Don't Tell starts it off perfectly.
I really dig Rush, have since '77, and truly enjoyed this move into the 90s. I thought they kept their uniqueness in tact in a decade of music that didn't start out so well but ended on a killer note. 2000-2010, w/some exceptions, kinda sucked compared to the 90s; I realize this came out in '89 but it really didn't spread around the planet until 1990 ...
Personally I don't give a shit that Rush are not in the rock and roll hall of fame, WHO CARES what a couple journalists think! Not being part of this meaningless, over-rated, mainstream institution is completely natural for a band like Rush. Rush and the mainstream are related but separate, let's keep it that way!

Thumbs Up If Agreed.
All this talk of a anti-religious aspect or religious aspect bothers me....the Peart point of view revolves around a spiritual aspect without the human organizational influence. People please.......spirituality is alive and well but it is not about a mind numbing human contolling way of life ...it is about being one with your self...in the absence of duality
Most anyone that listens to RUSH's lyrics must realize the anti-religion sentiment coming mostly from Neil Peart. He is an atheist and his lyrics strongly reinforce his world-view.
@SeaWolfe59 I want to agree with you, and I am also Athiest, but I don't see it as an anti-religious theme, I see it as choose your road. They all lead to the same destination anyway :P

This was the first 'back to basics' album in their sound. Alex had been working his guitar around the keyboard heavy songs that really started with Subdivisions and finally said "no more" when they started writing this album. That's why it's a big fat guitar riff that kicks off the song.
@wolfhound338 damnn man im 19 and i seen em live twice already. their first live show is what really got me into rush hardcore, best fucking band. they blow my mind live especially i swear rush doesnt have a bad song
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Should Be ashamed of it's self. Rush has been qualified to be inducted for 28 years now!!!! It's only three guys and they've come up with like 18 albums over the past 40 years.
Rush is a great band, a lot of skill has been proven with three pieces alone, yet they have such diversity in sound, truly great artists in my opinion.
Oh come on! those that don't love the stuff in the 70's are just not giving due respect to the growth of rock from 2112 to exit stage left, which is honesly the greatest live tour album in history.
(In my opinion) this was their best album since moving pictures. The "4th stage" is/was great, even though my favorite was their 70's stuff. I didn't really like much of the stuff after "Signals" and before "Presto," although there were a couple songs I liked from those dark times.
i like very much to see how people's opinions change and may be really opposite...
e.g., i don't like their 70's stuff at all, except a song or two... i like very much p\g & hold your fire, instead...
i think that, as a social phenomenon, i'll never understand how musical likes\dislikes vary... as i can't help myself with people that think that jonas bros or tokio hotel's guitarists are the best EVER......... makes me crazy
@AndreGolf4 Music is the outward expression of a person's thoughts and emotions at a given time. Listening is the emotional extraction of what moves us at a certain juncture, therefore what's "best" isn't necessarily what's best per se.
Remember, people are emotional beings and music is an expression of emotion, so round pegs fit into round holes. There are however many individuals and just as many varying voids looking to get filled. Think about things you used to love that don't touch you now.
In the new documentary about Rush, Kevin "Caveman" Shirley, the producer of "Counterparts" calls this album as well as "Roll the Bones" "thin" and something to the effect of them lacking balls. To me this was Rush returning to their classic precision power form. That opening is beyond perfect. This album will always be a favorite of mine. Geddy at 3:35 - 4:00? C'mon!

Was in middle school when "Fly By Night" came out, Over a friend's house hanging out & he puts the title track on. He was a drummer, but had recently bought a bass & was trying to learn it. I was like "shut it i wanna hear this!!" & the rest, as they say, is history. It's amazing how totally different this tune is from anything back then. Don't get me wrong, I dig this era/sound of Rush, too. For me, "Cinderella Man" will always be the sound of Rush, it's been implanted... sorry ;)
i love this album as well as counterparts.the thing about rush is they are always changing and progressing.i saw them for the snakes and arrows tour..there coming back in september.moving pictures in its entirety..i cant wait :)
I remember seeing them play this live on the presto tour.east troy wisconsin(alpine valley)was great show. Mr Big backed them up. they were ok.Of coarse rush smoked them
@chordsequencer001 Amen! So many people out there seem to have this "Rush vs. Yes" mentality. Personally, the two of them defined my love of music from the very beginning of my life.
@chordsequencer001 RUSH,THE BAND,In a league of their own! Seeing em in june, been since the 2112 tour since i have, never quit jamming their tunes though.
@aslin81 I am not offended by the God reference. It just seemed like a very dwight kinda comment.. It was funny and geddy may indeed be better then God at bass.
I was stationed in England in 1990 and had just bought a new stereo with Bose 601 series iii's. I used to play this cd all the time , right now im listening to this with them same speakers from nineteen years ago.
crappy sound then & now. get some real speakers, dynaudio, proac, gallo, totem, revel ect. also cd &mp3s suck for sound quality, consider the orginal Lps or SACD or Blue ray when possible. this record presto was poorly recorded with no bass or depth. Rush is best recording is there new live blue ray dvd or reg dvd Snakes & Arrows, then power windows.
Im sure the quality of these systems is a lot better. I wasn't braging on behalf of bose, just stating how ironic it was to still listen to rush with the same system. I wouldn't waste my money on any electronic juck today.
never heard a rush song that didnt suck large. this no exception. dont bother to comment on this, I know you're a tasteless moron.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Should Be ashamed of it's self. Rush has been qualified to be inducted for 28 years now!!!! It's only three guys and they've come up with like 18 albums over the past 40 years.
Vaderrules14 1 year ago 4
@Vaderrules14 What's stupid is that they have people like Madonna and LL Cool J (he's a nominee) in there.
MaxtheMetalhead 1 year ago
@Vaderrules14 For "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" read "Rock and Role Hall of Shit."
They don't deserve RUSH.

Rush were always my second favourite band just before Steely Dan
Just heard this brilliant song, love it! May have notched them up just above Steely Dan now!

Rush is a great band, a lot of skill has been proven with three pieces alone, yet they have such diversity in sound, truly great artists in my opinion.

I remember purchasing the vinyl the day of release. Fucking awesome.

Oh come on! those that don't love the stuff in the 70's are just not giving due respect to the growth of rock from 2112 to exit stage left, which is honesly the greatest live tour album in history.
oscarbarnett 1 year ago
(In my opinion) this was their best album since moving pictures. The "4th stage" is/was great, even though my favorite was their 70's stuff. I didn't really like much of the stuff after "Signals" and before "Presto," although there were a couple songs I liked from those dark times.
poddish 1 year ago
@poddish
i like very much to see how people's opinions change and may be really opposite...
e.g., i don't like their 70's stuff at all, except a song or two... i like very much p\g & hold your fire, instead...
i think that, as a social phenomenon, i'll never understand how musical likes\dislikes vary... as i can't help myself with people that think that jonas bros or tokio hotel's guitarists are the best EVER......... makes me crazy
AndreGolf4 1 year ago

For me, "Cinderella Man" will always be the sound of Rush, it's been implanted... sorry ;)

@aslin81 okay there Dwight Shrute

@pluckhutma Dwight Shrute... a bit misplaced, that's from Airheads. Funny nonetheless though.
And to all those who got in a twist by my comment, I wasn't bad mouthing god, I simply Said that Geddy was better than him.

@aslin81 I am not offended by the God reference. It just seemed like a very dwight kinda comment.. It was funny and geddy may indeed be better then God at bass.

I was stationed in England in 1990 and had just bought a new stereo with Bose 601 series iii's. I used to play this cd all the time , right now im listening to this with them same speakers from nineteen years ago.
steelbuc39 2 years ago
crappy sound then & now. get some real speakers, dynaudio, proac, gallo, totem, revel ect. also cd &mp3s suck for sound quality, consider the orginal Lps or SACD or Blue ray when possible. this record presto was poorly recorded with no bass or depth. Rush is best recording is there new live blue ray dvd or reg dvd Snakes & Arrows, then power windows.
fendergibs 2 years ago
Im sure the quality of these systems is a lot better. I wasn't braging on behalf of bose, just stating how ironic it was to still listen to rush with the same system. I wouldn't waste my money on any electronic juck today.
