Future Idea:Ever heard of magnetized rocket wings, small rocket wings that are highly magnetized against each other with high energy wings and lower wings are half size of upper; but both are highly magnetized and much less vibration of launch wing drag. Magnetized rocket wings for controlled launch!
I'd just like to thank everyone who made this possible, the scientists, the engeneers,NASA and especially the astronauts,it takes real guts to go into space, they are very brave.
this was the first launch i saw the video of i ddnt actually see this live i saw it the next day but i stayed up til 1am to watch the launch of endeavour it was an amazing night launch
It's on the external fuel tank near the top looking back at the bottom of the orbiter. They installed it after the Columbia accident so they can look for foam strikes during flight.
great launch but did anyone catch the debris at 3:57? looked like 2 panels, or tiles came off, or it was ice, who knows. let's just pray that their flight is a success and they make it back safely.
this is a big deal if they are panels NASA would need to be made aware of this. Maybe have their analysts review the video and make sure we dont have another critical problem like they did a few years ago upon re-entry...Anyone know how to make sure NASA is aware of what we have seen here??
first of all. it's 3:47. second of all, it's foam coming of the orange tank. and third of all, it's only one piece: it appears to be two pieces but if you look closely you'll see one piece is only just the shadow of the foam that is cast upon the belly of the orbiter.
acouple questions guys if ya dont mind.. what is that we start to see around 8 mins into the video.. vapors? gas? and after they seperate where do the solid rockets and the external tank go?
The solid rocket boosters falls down in the ocean with parachutes. Then they are towed back to KSC with two ships called the liberty and fredom. The SRB's are reused. The ET "burns" up in the atmosphere some time later. Because there is still some air there. The space shuttle fires its engines after orbit insertion to increase its orbit. About 345 km. The altitude of the space station.
No matter how many times I see it, it's still incredible.
A question; when the roll manuevers are performed upon liftoff and while on the way to orbit (before ET seperation), what makes it perform the manuever? Swiveling of the main engines?
What I wondered was during the launch phase, such as the roll manuever that puts the shuttle in a "headsdown" position, as well as the roll that's done just before ET seperation.
I gather from ThatsDave that my assumption about the SSMEs being used during these events was correct.
I hope they brought the stuff for the toilet. What they should really do is send the parts for the busted one, AND a new toilet, so if one is busted, they can poop in the other one. lol.
Oh and by the way .....we went into space today. Now let's go over to Gennie for the weather!

@wearejusthumanbeing The boosters fall back to Earth, are recovered, refilled, and reused. The fuel tank burns up/crashes into the Pacific

so the external tank incinerates to nothingness right?

yep
austinjb555 3 years ago
I thought it was re-usable and fell back to earth or something? Or is that just those two side-rockets at launch?
bleed0range 3 years ago
just the two side rockets- theyre not going NEARLY as fast as the red tank when it hits the atmosphere- which is why the red tank burns up
austinjb555 3 years ago
i like how this vid is from ingition to MECO. unlike some vids end at SRB seperation. good luck discovery....

Good Evening Everyone!
Question for the "Experts", from the launch this afternoon, there was a press conference going over a number of issues.
Issue #1) the foam or pieces of foam hitting the Shuttle...will they check it out throughly this time?
Other then that SUPERB JOB!

Yes, they will. Inspections are now normal procedure.

Yes you're right.
ThatsDave 3 years ago
They use the RCS thrusters. Small rocket truster that are placed all over the space shuttle to control it. Was that what you were wondering on?
joachim2464 3 years ago
I know the RCS thrusters are used in orbit.
