for the road, what about black foam core? just get some yellow strips of paper for medians. get large sheets 40X 60 , cut them length wise in 3rds and tape the "median" lines down the center. you'll end up with 180 inches of road way.

I hated that I couldn't actually use REAL asphalt, as it tested quite poorly. Always looked like overly big rocks in scale to the figures.

So I rationalized that the wooden table-top I used would convey fast-moving road alot better than just dragging these figures against the road.

its called a commercial. The interruption in action that was started by the original writers of ROBOCOP. Ed Nuemeier did this in alot of his movies. The chance to interupt a movie is a known as a break in the action.
