i'm kinda having trouble with the traditional grip. particularly with the thumb technique. i noticed that when you do it, you don't support the stick with your other fingers anymore. when i try it, i can't seem to keep the stick in place. any pointers?

You just have to build up strength in that area. If that area isn't hurting after you play with it for the first time, you're not doing it right. Use that area to actually hold the stick, your fingers are more of a guide for the stick.
