Anyway, I've never been educated to Catalan in any way throughout my life and I've practically never been in contact with it until very recently.
However, as I've been reading medieval Occitan and modern Provencal (speaking it a bit aswell) for a few years, I can read Catalan and understand it almost without effort (as a point of comparison, I had been learning Castillan for four years and I still struggle with it).
Catalan is mainly considered a language by itself because of the gigantic political pressure put on it (as most languages in their individualization phase). But it can decently be considered as a main variant inside a general Catalan-Occitan (the latest term being very recent actually, "Occitan" doesn't mean much for me) language. That would make the classification of Gascon easier aswell.

Thank you very much for your comment, please read all the post and then we can further discuss. As a Catalan I´m offended when someone says that what you´re listening is not a language. I pointed out the error to him and the he insisted saying something even more disrespectful to my culture and language... I´m sorry but this is not acceptable, at least he sould rectify! The Sir comment is just a side comment not the topic of the posts. Read my post to other people in this video... that´s true!
@revpoullet As I already told you, accepting that fact and apologizing depends on you! I agree that the first time could be an error, but keeping on posting such as thing is being disrespectful... Furthermore, your claim about the sentence of your neighbour looks more like portuguese than valencian language, which is not for sure! So, since you do not have anything else to say let´s enjoy the music...
@xbosch79 From an objective standpoint, your response is the disproportionate one. revpouillet posts seem to be polite and considered while yours have a regrettable irritable quality. Also, addressing you as sir is correct English. The title sir is specific to a British knighthood but in normal usage, it can be and is used as a respectful salutation.
@revpoullet Yes, of course you´ve being disrepectful to me and to the catalan language and culture saying that is just an low quality Occitan or Valencian version, If you do not want to accept that you have been disrespectul is up to you. I can live with that! Anyway, I let you know that I´m not a Sir, which is a noble title of the British empire, but I´m a world citizen. Thank you, and keep enjoying music and stop doing disrespectrul cultural post.
@revpoullet There is no need to be disrespectful stating another wrong idea. I pointed out your error because there is a big difference between North and South, and between a roman language per se and just a stupid copy of the Occitan language. Valencia and Catala are the same from a linguistic point of view. If you are not an expert you should considerate moderating your claims since they are wrong, and at least do not get mad when some one try to correct the stupidity that you posted.
@revpoullet Catalan is a language from the NORTH EAST region of the Iberian peninsula, not south east. It is the official language of ANDORRA, and has a co-official status with the Spanish in Catalunya, Valencian Comunity and Mallorca (being these last three autonomous communities of Spain). Although Catalunya and Lenguadoc had strong relationship in the past, Catalan is NOT a version of Occita (language of Languedoc) as you are clamming, it is another romance language.
@KhanTheMighty91 Catalan is quite different from Spanish. Just to say, it is more similar to old Italian and French than to actual Spanish. I think it is a dialect, restricted to a very particular region of Spain.
@1967born Catalan is a singular language born after the latin. It's more than 1000 years ago a language official of a little territori between the nord-est of spain and south of the antient territori of Oc, the country of the trobadors, in the south of the actual France. Catalan it's one of the best cultural languages in the mediterranean. One culture for discover. A very nice country, now it's a Sapin Autonomic Comunity. The family Savall it's one of the best flowers actually in Catalonia.
@1967born Better go to find a dictionary, look"dialect" and then realize that you are wrong. Or find an encyclopedia and look "Catalan" and then you will realize the same. It's a full developed language as french, english or italian.
@1967born Catalan is a language NOT a dialect at all. The Catalan language was developed from Vulgar Latin like the other romance languages. Catalan is the official language of Andorra, and it has a a co-official status with the Spanish Language in Catalonia, Valencia Community and Mallorca. One can found in Catalan a baste literature (original and translated), newspapers, radio, music, TV... and has a strong presence in Internet, specially in Wikipedia being one of the biggest ones
Catalan is the lenguage of the Catalan nation, today divided beetwen France and Spain. 11 milion person can speak .and is the mother tongue of 9 million people
@robertgimenez Catalan is the language of this song, but you're wrong in your assertion because Catalunya nowadays is part of Spain and they also speak Spanish.
The old language of Eastern Spain/Southern France is Occità, Langue D'Oc. Catalonia was chartered as a shire of Aragon in 1248, Modern Catalan is the Barcelona romantic dialect. The tongues of Valencia, Rousillon, Balearics, Languedoc, and Aragon were either Occità or so similar as to need no translation. They were spoken in ROman and Byzantine times and share quite similar grammars. HOWEVER, parallel the evolutions of Latin, intermixed with Celtic, Phoenician and Arabic phonems.
@KhanTheMighty91 Catalan language it's not a dialect. It's a language of more than 10 centuries. And it's restricted to the actual Catalunya(Katalonia), and Barcelona is the maine city(we're not a region, we're a nation). Catalunya lost de freedom in 1714, loosing a war of 12 years, and ending with the Treaty of Rastatt. The majority of Catalans do not feel Spanish and some day not far we hope hope to regain our freedom.
@KhanTheMighty91 You bet. Another word for Spanish is castellano, but Catalan is another language from the northeast of Spain. Before governments tried to enforce one language for the whole country, there were many languages and dialects. Catalan is one of the languages that survived in Spain. Another is Galician. You'll see plenty of words that look similar in all Romance languages, but you'll notice a big difference comparing Spanish and Catalan side by side... Beautiful work, Ariana Savall!
@KhanTheMighty91 Catalan is one more of the 26 romanic languages spoken in Europe. The most big from thouse without a own state. It has his own history, literature, music, etc. With a huge presence in Internet (for example in Wikipedia is in 13th place of the most big versions). A normal language as other languages.

First what you must know is that there's no such thing as "Spanish language"!
As for the rest, I think the other commentators already answered your questions!
