  • @RichardElden Well, that's your opinion - but please, start your own blog or something. Is Youtube really the place for this? regardless, best etc etc...

  • @RichardElden Burton was familiar with Winston's less patriotic speeches such as: "I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas (...)I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes." and "We shall wipe them out, every single one of one them, men, women and children, there shall not be a single Japanese left on the face of the Earth." Paradoxically, Burton met Churchill twice and even had a bust of him at his home.

  • @RichardElden You hate Burton so much. Why exactly? Seeing as you slag the man off so endlessly I mean why - opinions upon his acting aside - do you hate him so much? I'd be very interested to know.

  • Becket. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Three of the finest performances put on film, especially Woolf. What does cigarettes have to do with the pursuit of his craft? 7 Academy Award nominations attest to his great skill as an actor. Or are you now presuming that you know more about acting than the world's top actors who nominated him 7 times for the world's greatest acting prize?

  • Disgusting comments by some on one of the finest actors of his generation, Wishiing anybody would die of cancer is beneath contempt. What type of person are you any way? Sounds to me in today's TV-influenced cinema people are too dumb to appreciate acting of a high order, I suppose you are the type of people who consider Star Wars the greatest film ever made.

  • Far too cerebral for today's dumb audiences. Not a chance in hell of it going to DVD or being repeated on TV

  • Why hasn't anyone uploaded the entire series on YouTube yet?

  • Richard Burton was a ridiculous actor

  • A God to me, Wagner is my god! This is music at its best!

  • What a cunt he was, a genius yes, but a cunt nevertheless.

  • I have a copy of this film. One of Burton's and Redgrave's best performances. Wagner was such a miserable egocentric bigot all wrapped around a musical genius. Brilliantly directed and played. One of my favorites. Thanks for posting.

  • @westminster860 Burton was terrible.

  • @JuanMacready

You must be drunk!! Here are a few films you should see:

The spy who came in from the cold

    Becket

    Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf

    Look back in anger

    The taming of the shrew

    Equus

    Need I go on?

  • @srvgtr Becket was a piece of shit and he was terribly miscast in Look Back in Anger. Equus was just a gay porn film. I'm glad Burton died at only 58, pity it wasn't from lung cancer.

  • @srvgtr JuanMacready has some personal grudge against Burton. Some kind of nut job who goes on all the Youtube videos starring Burton and says terrible things about how glad he is that Burton died young. He is not drunk, he is a sick individual.

  • @chrissy1095 Is he the same sicko who hates Audrey Hepburn and says nasty things about her ? I ran into someone on Youtube (don't know who) who is always insulting Audrey, saying she was a whore who smoked cigars, a bitch, and he hates her performance in My Fair Lady calling her "old" when she was only in her 30's.

  • @AmericanEvita I think there are sick people who just develop a hatred of certain people. Probably being eaten up inside with envy. This guy JuanMcready I don't think has missed one of Burton's videos on Youtube, posting the same hateful garbage about him, time and time again, saying he wished he died from lung cancer, saying he was a contributor to apartheid, all sorts of delusional stuff. He's one sick dude and I would not want to be living next door to this guy. Totally off the wall.

  • @chrissy1095 Delusional? He funded the apartheid regime by visting South Africa many times and filming a racist movie called The Wild Geese there.

  • @JuanMacready Yeah, that's right, you're DELUSIONAL. And BONKERS. Now really Juan, what's bothering you? Did Richie steal you wife? Hmmmmm?

  • @chrissy1095 I just wish the talentless overacting racist had died of lung cancer like the infinitely better Sir Stanley Baker.

  • @JuanMacready I guess he did steal your wife.........awwwwwww!

  • @JuanMacready personally, i would like to jump with my boots on on your head while watching richard burton playing in any of his movies.

  • @chrissy1095 Well said, lol. Totally off the wall.

  • @AmericanEvita Eliza was only supposed to be 19. Hepburn was far too old for the part.

  • A very boring flop.

  • I would very much the VHS tapes of this, SamsaraBlues

  • ...but you can get it on DVD.

    DVD is much better, friend.

  • It is without doubt a congenial adaption of the Nietzsche - Wagner relationship. I have the original VHS-version (I think it's 4 or 5 cassettes), but unfortunately no Player any more. In case anyone wants it.. ;-)

  • @SamsaraBlues

Hi, just read your post. If they're still available, I'd like to buy them. Thanks.

  • I had no idea this movie existed until recently. I've always thought it strange that there were no high-profile mainstream films made about Wagner, as there have been about Mozart, Beethoven, and other composers. At least there are none I'm aware of. Wagner's life is probably among the most colorful, eventful, and controversial of anyone in the history of music, and would be an extremely rich subject for such a film. A genius, but an extremely complex and flawed character.

  • @bsartist There is an obvious reason... I won't mention it here but you should be able to figure it out

  • It's so amazing! Wagner's personality was later transcended onto the Nazi Germany thinking themselves superior to others.

  • I didnt think it was boring at all! You have to be a hardcore Wagner fan to enjoy this epic and romantic/dramatic account of his life..and it's full of great music...I thought Burton did a marvelous job and I loved it..I wish they could upload everything though it's a very long series

  • @AmericanEvita I agree it's wonderful. And I am a hardcore fan of his!

  • Anyone know where to find this movie, preferably online!

  • Yes, I downloaded it, in e-mule, all the ten chapters. I am dowloading for second time richt now.

  • Are you downloading to youtube? If not, could you send me the link to this e-mule thing? Thanks!

  • Happy 83rd birthday Richard Burton!

  • She looks like real Cosima!!!

  • I don't think so, i find that Bulow really looks like the original one :P

  • Maybe...yes, Bulow looks like Hans...

  • Wonderful! But why cutted in the middle of the Meistersinger excitement? Burton had the privilege to play the role of God! Were they any other movies made about the Maestro Wagner?

  • Wow...the big 5 together in a tv series.....Burton,Redgrave,Richardson,Gielgud and Olivier.

  • I ransacked the UALR library's media section and not a trace of this series could be found. Thanks for posting this. I wish I could see more, but am greatful nonetheless. Oh, I do love Wagner.

  • It is available on DVD. Expensive, but available.

  • Fantastic...I remember it well.

  • Poor Hans!

  • yeah poor hans! ive never seen this, just came on here cus i love richard burtons voice, but the clips were quite engrossing :)
