Skywriting is done with a single plane. This is called skytypeing. All the planes are linked via a computersystem on board that tell each individual plane when to smoke. Very much similar to the way the printerhead in an old dot matrix printer works as it moves across the paper. This is just on a much larger scale of course.

Air planes shoot water vapor, and make clods, sort of.

Not exactly. water may or may not vaporize into visible clouds, but oil always will. Lightweight oil is injected into the hot exhaust manifold of a piston powered airplane or dumped into the exhaust of a jet, which vaporizes into thick white smoke. I've even seen it colored red, blue (doesn't show up agains the sky very well) and green.

yeah its very cool one day i was out kayaking and i saw the same type of skywriting it was very neat so i looked it up and found out that it is actually called digital sky writing and the pilot doesn't even have to do anything he just plugs the coordinates and it just pumps out smoke when he and his fleet get to the right spot!

i had never seen this before til yesterday in CT, over a festival. caught the 'tail-end' of it on vid. it looked like 5 jets to me, flying fairly high. did u ever figure out how they did it and why ? very expensive way of advertising if u ask me !
