  • captivating. never heard a more heart felt sorrow filled song. couldnt be more perfect.

  • Curtains drawn, now it's done.

  • i wish this version was on the album.

  • 96 days sober today .... this music always helps me remember where i came from and dont want to go back too

  • @drunelson1 Happy to hear that. Good luck bro

  • @oyfen92 thank you brother

  • @drunelson1 Addiction is hard to kick...never goes away fully...but when you're that far in, it gets easier and easier...Wish Layne could've been like you and me

  • hmm such a beautiful song :), and jerry is also beautiful ^^

  • hermoso tema me ase recordar tantas cosas....

nostalgia pura viva el grunge..que revive mis recuerdos...

  • Sound person sucks, vocals way too loud, he should either turn the rest of the instruments up or the vocals down.

  • lovely

  • this must be hard for Jerry to sing live. R.i.p Layne

  • I dedicate this to my mom who passed away in 2007. Tomorrow I will be in my bjj competetion and it's another thing my mom will never see or knew that I could do. Depression sucks... it killed my mom. R.I.P. Mom.

  • @83ishgirl hi,what is bjj?

  • @ghostwhiskey Hi. It's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I placed 2nd in "no gi" (gi:martial art uniform) and 3rd in "gi".

  • wow 9 people are fuckin dipshits for not likin this..

  • How can someone not like this song?

  • Steve Martin performed right after Alice in Chains that night.

  • Yes it was Steve Martin. He is a huge Alice fan. What a beautiful performance. R.I.P. Layne.

  • this is just like a sad country song but not castrated

  • @zepphead1981 WTF it is Jerry's way of letting go of Layne.... Duvall wasn't supposed to "replace" Layne.... They wanted to come out with a new album... jackass

  • 9 people have no life !!!! great music.. makes me cry every time I listen to it

  • O Brasil espera Alice in Chains no SWU Festival 2011 in November

  • sounds like he has a stuffy nose

  • Steve Martin at 2:35

  • @gcba33 holy shit that honestly seriously looks like him i wonder if it is

  • This makes me cry.. every time../.

  • beautiful song...Layne was so great, but glad that the band is carrying on.

  • Still loving this song....

  • I swear to god i looked back up to the screen at 2:21 and saw laynes eyes for a brief moment, weird

  • this is a good day for this song.........

  • took this 58 year old airline inspector 15 years to come around to this band - by the way ,my opinion, the best Seattle has ever offered. Now I get to play catch-up with all the great music these guys have done and are doing. Can't get enough of their tunes - top-rated, for sure!

RIP LS. Good luck to you, WD.

Check out #1 banjo player Steve Martin at 2:36 - he waiting in the "wings" and giving the band a good listen..

  • @davidtycer I related to them as a teenager and these days its not any different. they were such a part of my childhood and they will probably always be an important part of my life

  • @davidtycer Better late than never! AIC will not disappoint. If you can see them in concert, yes with William - they will rock you.

  • Only one thing missing ... ... Layne :'(

  • @TheMetalclub666 you're wrong, layne is right there, you can feel it

  • @AllRamonesMusic yeah ur right

  • Sounds like he has a cold..

  • Genial essa musica!

  • This song is so Beautiful

  • cantrell is a fucking beast

  • this song means so much to me....R.I.P. Layne and Mike....

  • @beastmodemunns88 Mike? Inez?

  • @alex2410 starr, first bassist

  • @alex2410 Starr

  • I played this song continuously after one of the most important people to me committed suicide. I feel this song in every part of my being.

  • @AmishPornStar1986 its amazing how music like this can actually touch your soul, you know what i mean, its something you can't really explain

  • @AllRamonesMusic

I completely agree. I try to express how much this song means to me and it's impossible. It's how I felt during the surrealism of the week of his funeral. Everything felt wrong and blurry. This song and O.R.T. from Silent Hill spoke to me (yes, I'm a video game nerd).

  • @AmishPornStar1986 I'm Sorry for your loss. I really am. Music has helped me along a lot. I believe I can thank Alice in Chains for where I am today in a lot of ways. It's like allramonesmusic says. Sometimes, music is the best friend you can get. it's like it understands you more than anybody. if you know what I mean.

  • @oyfen92

Thanks! It's been hard and some days it seems like he just died. Nothing will feel like the blurry hell of that first week. Now when I listen to this song, I feel close to him. It hurts but not in a bad way. If that makes sense?

  • @AmishPornStar1986 it does make sense. stay strong mate

  • "I don't wanna feel no more

    It's easier to keep falling"

  • @RipGarrido So sad and depressing words :( but still fells good to hear in some sord of way.. cant explain it

  • <3<3<3 la raja

  • I wish Layne and Mike were up there :(

  • RIP LAYNE AND MIKE . MAY GOD WATCH OVER YOU .....

  • I would ball if I seen this song live. I tear up just listening to it on my ipod.

  • @zepphead1981 bullshit

  • @zepphead1981 Exactly! Totally agree (I dnt nd no shit on a ma dick tho). Layne didnt need a send off. Cantrell tried it on his own and failed. We ALL know why?... No doubt DuVall's a great guy and he took the chance with both hands but he CANT/WONT be remembered as a unique frontman. It's an insult to Layne to sign up a mimic lead to sell more tracks.' Black n Blue' would have been a great name for this new band because although the DuVall sounds the same its not AIC anymore.

  • @zepphead1981 He wrote this song for Layne you piece of shit.

  • well that sure aint rooster or man in the box...a.k.a. the classics

  • Its Alice in Chanins. others seem to agree???? 2U Ztroyer105 Whats Duvall's outcome in all of this?

  • cantrell is the only person i know who has a similiar voice to layne and that is why i think they sounded so awesome together. layne lives on in cantrells lyrics. Duvall is a "frontman" but nothin like layne....but the man can still belt shit out. Cantrell and the rest are awesome musicians, im sure they know who to look for way more than any of us....last i checked, none of you were in one of the greatest bands of all time

  • Seems god loves everyone but 8 peoples.

  • AC/DC found a new singer after Bon Scott died....

  • @AmyBaker1120 Exactly. Haters will always hate.

  • Miss you mate, love u Layne, sorry your gone.. but I already have your replacement to my left. So much for brotherhood. Isn't that like bringing your mistress to your wife's funeral?

  • @majorisore i wouldnt really say hes a replacement, no one could really replace layne, when i saw em live 2 years ago they dedicated nutshell and a few others to layne so i view it more as a healing process and moving forward you know? i mean it had been more than 10 years since their last record before black gives way to blue, if you listen to their new album a lot of it can be interpreted as a healing process, but thats just my view :D

  • @TheMoshedPotatoes Your right mate, 10 years is a long time. So why have a guy who 'SOUNDS' like Staley?......You cant replace Freddie from Queen, You cant replace Morrison from the Doors. You cant replace Staley from Alice in Chains. Cantrell tried it himself and failed. no LS no AIC.. Just my brutal honest thoughts..

  • @majorisore Stop being a dick!

  • @Ztroyer105 truth hurts

  • @majorisore So because singers die from bands the rest of there band should feel bad because they want to carry on doing what they love... Alice in Chains never tried to replace . Its called moving on as much as I love Layne I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have wanted his friends to stop playing music and call it a day.

  • @Ztroyer105 Cantrell tried on his own and failed so WTF u talking about? MY point is you don't sign a singer that sounds the EXACT same as the ICONIC person that millions loved & WAS ALICE IN CHAINS. Duvall does back flips on a live stage.. So what! His own unfortunate downfall in history will be as an interactive impersonator. Brutal but honest!

  • @majorisore If you don't like this video then why are you on it? You still have Facelift,Dirt & Jar of Files so why are you wasting your time just enjoy there old music if you can't enjoy there new!

  • @majorisore but if you listen to jerrys solow ork it is actually amazing just wanted too say

  • Comment removed

  • @234addict. I remember a Barrowlands gig years back where the sound was cut. I bet you ya all a mllion u cant tell me whar he said.,....

  • Comment removed

  • @Ztroyer105 It's all back to front tnight. now ur the dick n im still luvn layne.. lol

  • @majorisore Heard of fresh air?

  • @Ztroyer105 Yeah. they print T shirts.. why? lol

  • @majorisore Stop commenting!

  • @Ztroyer105 Sherlock.1 day ago YOU asked ME a question. I answered your q. If you dont like the answer dont ask the stupid fuckn q in the first place.. God forbid anyone disagrees with you. Shocking behaviour!!

  • @majorisore Yeah whatever!

  • @Ztroyer105 Ok enough! 'Yeah whatever!' is original and witty. Not sure u can patent it tho... THIS IS NOT YOUR STAGE TO CONSTANTLY HAVE A GO AT ANYONE WHO DOES NOT AGREE WITH YOU! Drop it. Stop ur constant questions and let others decide for themselves. capiche!

  • @majorisore I wasn't trying to be original but you just keep on at me!

  • @majorisore I agree.

  • The pain in Jerry's eyes and voice is heartbreaking in this.

  • Pisses me off how easy they can make superstar with shows like the voice and American idol....almost 10 years and nothing been done for our friend Layne, no behind the music no bio no nothing...SHAME IN YOU...RIP LAYNE

  • I wish I could hug layne

  • my aunt came over and told me her dog of over 17 years died while i was listening to this song. i guess this ones for her too as well.

  • love this album!! still love alice in chains!

  • his voice is exactly the same as on the album, that's how you know a band is serious, not that digitally edited crap that's on the radio, where the singers can't perform half-tolerable performances live because they sound like shit due to the lack of real musical talent

  • Im writng from Peru, what a beautiful song, no matter anything else. I miss the old times with layne staley....but i can't do anything to get back...im happy with all the songs, new and older...... one more thing...i think when jerry says "lay down, black gives way to blue, lay down ill remember you...." he try to talk about lay-ne.... damn ... :((

  • Look at 2:35 of the video. It looks like Steve Martin on the Banjo.....

  • Ive lost a great friend and this song hits close to the heart. Layne can never be replaced but im so glad they found a way to continue making music. Give Duvall a break hes doing a great job! The guys got big shoes to fill!

  • This ain't exactly Alice in Chains, but it's the next best fucking thing, so suck my cock!

  • AIC for life man don't care who sings \m/

  • so many tears with this song, always remembering Layne.

  • Why there is som much Duvall haters? Fuck off, he's not Layne, of course, but he's a great singer...

  • Great song and love seeing Steve Martin with his banjo

  • Nice tribute to Layne Staley, Jerry's best friend.

  • Layne is Layne DuVall is DuVall

  • @johnbjn Look mate, I completely understand where you're coming from. DuVall could never replace Layne, but the thing is, he's not trying to. What you have to appreciate is that you have three very talented guys that still have a lot more to offer and I think you'll agree that this album proves that. I feel the guys did a great job on this album, DeVall included. And though I wish Layne was still here, I'm grateful the band have carried on. AIC Forever!

  • dont think i ever heard a better song dedicated to a person than black gives way to blue

  • Esta canción es para escucharla solo, en la oscuridad y tirado en el suelo.

Esta es una de las mejores canciones que escuché de AIC.

    El Grunge sigue vivo♥

  • @supersoap797 fuck off u stupid cunt cock sucking piece of shit

  • @supersoap797 fuck off u stupid cunt

  • great song sang with passion & heart felt feelings i lv it

  • This is the best song in the whole world.

  • jerry cantrell fan all the way!!!!!!!

  • you can see the sadness in jerry's eyes. RIP Layne and Mike

  • the reason why this song is only 3 minutes long is bc jerry cried so fuckin much singing the track for this an had to keep redoing takes, 3 minutes is pretty tough to sing for a fallen friend, i dont think i coulsd even sing 3 seconds with out ballin :,(

  • @spenjax1111 how did you find that out?

  • @robicool if you look at the videos on your right, there is one with a snapshot of jerry with make up on, its an interview, and way into the interview he talks about this song and how hard it was to sing it bc he wrote it in memory of Layne. its pretty badass

  • @spenjax1111 cool, thanks for the reply man!

  • Duvall has no right to be in this song man

  • @Jonbjn fuck you

  • I would have rathered to see AiC be a Trio . Doesnt seem like Duvall fits in , Just my opinion

  • @MATTHEWTHEINGRAM I agree.I respect him for coming in.But,Duvall has more of a punk background while the rest of AIC has a heavy metal/grunge background.

  • There's an ocean of sorrow in this song. Respect.

  • @LennonBach- Don't you mean "Sea of sorrow?"...

  • @ididcramsmom haha, maybe! Listen to Opeth's song called "Burden", and you'll understand me! :)

  • Steve Martin 2:35-2:37.

  • @iboughtit lol, is that really him! That kind of funny...and weird, he dosent strike me as a grunge fan

  • @Zanm1991 yeah man def him, you wouldn't expect black people to like metal but look at howard from Killswitch, if you are a self respecting musician you will venture into all forms of music. Music is one of the only equal things in this world.

  • @iboughtit idiots

  • Did anyone else get chills down their spine?

  • @iboughtit I did when reading your comment xD

  • @iboughtit

    I surely do

  • @iboughtit BIG TIME !

  • Beautiful but tragic song! Very touching! R.I.P Layne! You are truly missed. Alice in Chains is one of my all-time favorite bands! AIC will never be the same without Layne but good for them for continuing to do what they love. Jerry's an amazing song writer. Pure genius!

  • Бля... Я плакал..

  • I can't even imagine how hard it must be for Jerry Cantrell to sing this song.

  • Still sounds like Alice... These guys are real musicians.

  • 4/20/2002. 9 years already. R.I.P. Layne

  • 8 people have no soul.

  • this song hurts soooo much. rip old friend....powerful.

  • every time hes says Layyyyy down I keep thinking hes gonna say Layne

  • i think this is my only favorite album from when music turned to shit in the 2008s i love this album, im glad their still around and i want them to make more music. im glad they made this as a tribute to layne!

  • not many songs this well written or performed. Last one I remember is she's gone by Black Sabbath

  • Blows me away how 8 ignorant people don't like this song. Whats the matter too much talent? A band where there are actually talented musicians who can play an insrtument? Must be Beiber fans or Lady Gaga fans. This is incredible song writing and played with such feeling. It's clear Jerry has a hard time with this song but just does such an incredible job. Does anyone know if this Live Holland show is on Itunes or cd?

  • Steve Martin looks like he's going to start bawling his eyes out, and Jerry looks like he may lose it at the end.

  • This song is so heartfelt, i miss you Layne Staley, thank you for the music that you have gave the world, R.I.P

  • Stephen Rea is on piano!

  • damn u gotta figure jerry and layne were boys, thats some emotional deep felt shit right there

  • It's almost like you can see layne standing with his hand on jerry's shoulder saying: "Thanks brother for keeping me alive in your words..."

  • this songs makes me feel better

  • RIP Layne and Kurt

  • Layne...man we miss you....

  • To everyone out there who is affected by substance abuse - users and their families/loved ones alike - God bless you, and there is help out there waiting for you. Reach out and grab it. May Layne, his family, Mike Starr and his family, and the guys in AIC find peace.

  • RIP Layne.

  • R.I.P. Layne,if it werent for AIC music,I dont know how I'd got through some rough times, and thats a big thanks from the bottom of my heart

  • RIP Layne..thanks for everything that you gave us...and complete my soul.

  • love aic!! my favorite band

  • 5th April 2002 the world got a little sadder when we lost Layne. A man with an amazing voice often imitated never bettered. Fantastic tribute song AIC may move on but Layne will always be there.

  • 3 DAYS EARLY BUT FUCK IT. 9 YEARS AGO THE WORLD LOST THE GREATEST SINGER IN THE WORLD TO A LONG BATTLE WITH DRUGS. HE IS AN INSPIRATION TO MANY AND LOVED BY ALL. WE LOVE YA LAYNE AND WILL NEVER EVER FORGET YOU " YOU'RE WINGS ARE NO LONGER DENIED:"

  • RIP Mike and Layne. This band has changed my life, been listening to them since I was 4 years old. They've helped me through great times, and they've helped me through shit times. THank you so much ALice in Chains for everything.

  • I dont know about u but this song makes me cry everytime i hear it.

  • at first i was against aic reform without layne....but this song was just a perfect song and a great tribute to Layne

  • Great album. It's brilliant.

  • This is the sad generation of hate...F ALL HATERS....follow the devil to your tired grave...wasted life.....

  • This Album is the SHIT!!!!

  • Makes me cry, every time, Jerry.

  • Really beautiful song and it captures the sense of laying someone to rest. Looking forward without forgetting what has been. As I said on a another performance: this is one of the track that delivers despite poor overall production of the record. This song also proves that they can tamper more with their sound and create great atmosphere. Give me strings and more piano on the next one :D

  • Fuk Yes. If you thumbed this down you have a thumb up your ass.

  • This disc came out just a couple of weeks before my Grammy passed away - she was absolutely everything to me, and I always associate this song with her. I think that Jerry and the guys deciding to keep the band going was the right decision. Jerry always said they made music for themselves, and if everyone else liked it, great! I love Jerry's voice, and I think William sounds great too. It's not necessarily about having the best vocals ever, but what goes with the song.

  • sounds more like this is a tribute to Layne and Mike..

actually the album isn't that bad; would rather hear Layne sing those songs but still this song tugs at me heart strings

  • these 7 dislikes should be pressed by mistake !! no one could dislike that song so easily......

  • Why is Steve Martin there?
