I welcome people to be athiest, go for it, enjoy yourself, but is it really necessary to bash faith?
What he's attacking is only partly 'relgion'. He's actually bashing people who believe something different from his own beliefs, and thats pretty damn hypocritical coming from a guy like Bill Maher.
@Cblotnicky What he's attacking is the essence of faith. The 'religion' you seem to think is not so bad is only results when people in effect become less religious. It consists in ignoring and rationalizing embarrassingly stupid and immoral parts of the Bible, for example. Or when they grudgingly accept the findings of science that contradict their faith. Or when they accept Enlightenment values over Biblical ones. And on the point of the necessity of bashing faith: open your fucking eyes!
@icharisghost I think sometimes you do. You simply aren't paying attention to what is going on in the world if you think that religion is merely a harmless, personal delusion. And your objection to people calling out the flagrant irrationality that is religion only serves to shelter the pious. If you object to challenging religious extremism then ultimately you stand on a continuum with it.
Bill and Craig are among my fav people, but there is not much chemistry for sure. I think Craig is trying hard to make sure Bill doesn't say anything too offensive for his audience, and Bill is like just "acting" like in his show. At least Bill feels at home but... well... this is more a comedy show than his, and it is kind of belong to Craig. In short, even if he hates "losing" his freedom of speech and because you are a guest doesn't mean there is no bound of reason on what you can say.
Bill Maher's usually a fairly nice guy. There's a reason why he seems condescending here. In a past interview, Craig cut Bill off because Bill was saying something Craig considered "offensive." If there's one thing Bill doesn't like, it's when people don't speak their mind. If there's one thing Bill probably HATES, it's when other people try to take away his right to speak his mind. So, Bill probably got a little irked that Craig cut him off during a past interview.
I doubt Maher is that petty. The man is an adult. The awkwardness here could be an act (Ferguson has actually said on several occasions that he likes to end interviews awkwardly, and forces it there at times). If it was any real tension it would be the fact that Maher connoted that marriage, in general, is foolish to a man who is (apparently) happily married. That could explain his nerves later in the interview.
@superfob54 Nah, i think it's because they actually hang out a lot...when i was a bartender at a restaurant i saw them 3 times having dinner together and it seemed pretty similar
It's because the last time Bill got kicked off the show and I think he's probably the only one to get kicked off in Craigs history, but Bills just not meant for public television. He's just not lol.
You obviously don't know many atheists.... Bill pitches softballs from a fairly visible platform is all. He is HARDLY an example of the walking psychosis that the Phelps family displays.
i think Bill has pretty good views on religion, just think how rediculus greek mythology is to us or how crazy the Ancient Egyptians religion was, thats how people are going to think about Christianity thousands of years from now, if we are still around.
You don't seem to be denying either, yet you don't straight up acknowledge it, so you are ashamed of your beliefs (assuming you're Christian, which I could be wrong)
I don't have to deny anything. The only thing we can deny here is Maher's knowledge of the topic. Any sane Christian with some damn COMMON SENSE, who read the Bible in its integrity and did some analysis, knows PERFECTLY WELL (like any scholar) that the Bible is a library, not a harry potter book. Meaning the genres vary from philosophical to theological to historical to prophetical texts. Adam/Eve and "talking snake" are merely THEOLOGICAL accounts of human fall to the sin.
And please remember something else: SERIOUS people don't even mention such idiocy as talking snake being literal in theological debates. Maher is anything but a serious, knowledgable man. It's enough to see "religulous" and its pathetic attempts at being consistent or convincible to realize that.
It is sort of unreasonable to expect such elaborate in-depth discussion on a late night show. Maher is by no means a Dawkins, but he gets his point across the the layman.
As for the bible being merely theological, well that's a given, right up there next to Zeus, the Norse gods, etc. The only difference is that many evangelicals take it as an accurate historical depiction of events, and these people deserve our scorn, which Maher delivers moreorless.
Moreover, "SERIOUS people" aren't the ones causing the brouhaha, what with the banning of gay marriage, abortion, and saying America is a "CHRISTIAN NATION".
I'll admit Maher is making cheap-shots at these insane Christians, but really they needed to be confronted. Maher isn't some grand scholar philosopher, but he makes a couple good points.
lol America a christian nation? Please, spare me. Anything but christian. You're being fed the image of christians that your TV (and Maher) feeds you, but it's ok. Who needs to be confronted are the people portraying stupid wannabe-christians as the real true christians, distorting the image of true Christianity. It's their mission to do so, and there's no surprise. It's ok kiddo, "scorn" is deserved by peeps comparing the idea of Christian God to Zeus and Poseidon. Meh.
Why must you talk to me as if I were a child in order to get credibility? Clearly you did not read anything I wrote. Let me repeat:
"SERIOUS people" aren't the ones causing the brouhaha... saying America is a "CHRISTIAN NATION"
How are you accusing me of claiming that America is a Christian nation? I was agreeing with you, sensible people don't claim that. Clearly you're not the sensible one I had mistaken you for. You ignore what I have to say, and demean me by calling me "kiddo".
Unfortunatelly you failed once again, don't be surprised. I didn't accuse YOU of calling America a "Christian Nation". I commented on the people who do so, and they aren't the serious ones indeed. Serious christian people know exactly how the system works and what the plan is. I said you just swallow the bullshit of the stupid ones, which is seen in your post. That's all.
There nothing I can get out of a conversation with a close-minded individual as yourself who casts aside the ideas of others and starts accusing others of falsehoods. You may place yourself on a greater pedestal than non-sensible Christians, but you've demonstrated otherwise.
And finally, what if I compared your God to Mohammed? Do you scorn the entire Muslim population then? These Gods are just as legit as Zeus. In any case, you'll ignore this point anyway and accuse me of more lies. Bye
"Legit", lol. God to Mohammed? In other words, a non-physical, supernatural deity to a man? Let's compare a computer to a chair then, I'm sure they're the same at the END OF THE DAY, aren't they?...Meh.
There's nothing to ignore really, no lie to accuse you of either, but comparing greek -mythology- to the gospels for example is comparing harry potter to encyclopedia. I know what you'll answer, but go ahead, I'm rubbing palms.
i liked the stabs that went back and forth and i think the interview was interesting, compared to all the stupid broads he has on the show Bill Maher was pretty funny
i cant blame for cuttin off maher at times, he is from scotland and europeans tend to be more cautious about religion, race issues
