It's an SRPG. Strategy Role Playing Game

If you ever played Fire Emblem (and I guess Advance Wars) it's somewhat similar to that with a primitive FPS added.

That and this is probably at a convention so he's playing it for the first time

kinda reminds me of gameplay similar to an old early release for PS2 called Ring of Red. Looks like the finished product should be protty fun :P
