Nice job certainly, however I don't care much for this version. It skips through the piece too quickly, namely at 1:50 and at the descent at the end. It really ruins it for me personally, being one of those who search the internet for good recordings of basses. No disrespect to your basses however, I am well aware that the Rach Vespers are impossible to do justice without real russian basses, and even then it's hard!
This is among my favourite movements from Rachaninov. You sing it very well.
@KjeXXXer: Thank you so much for your compliment. It is hard for amateur choirs to find excellent basses that can do justice to some Russian music. I have also sung with Pro Coro Canada who certainly have the basses to do it justice, but, they are a professional choir. I think for an amateur choir these basses do very well indeed, I have heard much, much worse.
@robbcarson They hit the notes fairly well and all, but as I said what really irks me is not primarily the performance, but the arrangement. It just goes through it way too quickly for it to get the full effect of the piece. So the blame would fall primarily on the conductor.
I do not understand your point in stating this Can you please clarify and in so doing, remember this is on YouTube simply for people to enjoy who wish to hear it no matter what creed, colour, nationality etc. they have or are. It you intended this as a racist comment then I would ask you to refrain and keep your comments to yourself.
WOW, 34,000 plus people have listened to this, I can hardly believe it!! Thank you to all who have listened. I am working on some Christmas stuff right now and am looking forward to getting it on here ASAP.
Hi/My boss was recently shown the door (thank you, recession!) This was very hard for me because, in many ways, she was like a mother to me./A lukewarm Roman Catholic, I sometimes turn to religion when distressed (and distressed I was.)/The only thing that could calm me done was these vespers./I understand that Rachmaninov composed them when he too was going thru tough times./In any event, thank you for your posting -- it helped me a lot./Sincerely, Mascherina
Thank you for your comment. I am honoured and humbled that in your time of distress you found this comforting. I think this is soothing whether you are Catholic or not during times of trouble, Let's not forget, Simeon was not Catholic yet this is his song of rejoicing to God. May he hold you in the palm of his hands and bring you comfort.
I just noticed I have had over 21,000 viewers check out this video and I wanted to thank ALL of you for visiting, your comments and your support. I never imagined this many people around the world would visit, I am honoured and humbled, thank you, thank you. Merci, Gracias. Danke.
Absolutely.... glorious? no, beautiful. yes, Absolutely Beautiful, thank you so much for putting this up - Rachmaninov's Vespers has always been up on my list of favourites, and this is so perfect - it's lovely :]
And the pronounciation is so good that, if not to listen attentively to every word, I would never thought the soloist and the choir were not Russians. Or maybe they or some of them were ? :)
Thank you to all who have left comments regarding this video, your comments are very important to me. For those of the faith, I am so pleased you are finding this uplifting and inspirational as it is meant to be.
Once again, thank you to all.
Спасибо за все ваши комментарии. Ваши комментарии важны для меня.
Thank you Anti for responding to as915's request. I could not remember which church it was LOL. It is beautiful isn't it? This is the site where Stalin tore down the previous Cathedral and was going to build some building with a huge statue of himself on top. Saw a documentary on Russia that included this information. Apparently there is still a room or two under ground built by Stalin which remain including a theatre of some kind.
Wow, fantastic. I'd hire you if I were in a position to do so... you've got a lovely and very expressive voice. IMHO that's a key requirement for this piece - I've heard it many times with a soloist who doesn't quite "get it," and it's merely pretty. But this is a very emotional and affecting performance. Also hats off to the choir and director - and the bass section at the end! Humans were just not meant to sing that low.
I just can't hear this without feeling the tears come to my eyes, no matter how many times I hear it . . . very nicely done in this version, though a little faster than some that have heard.
Thank you for wonderful execution of Rahmaninov's "Nyne Otpuschaeshi" from All-Night Vigil. It is was very wonder and glad to me of CANADIAN execution of this great christian Simeon song! Thank you!
Robb thanks for your beautifull singing of the Simeon Song. We Christians have it all in common, singing is in the evening of the day and off our lives!
Oh Yes this is wonderful !!!!!!!!!. Thank you so much for posting it. I love Russia. And i love the byzantine faith.. Icons are like a part of my life... All things Russian... Someday i wish to make a trip to Russia to see and hear this beauty for myself....
Thanks to everyone who have posted comments, they are so great to read. I am pleased you are enjoying the post. Just a hint...I'm available to sing this anywhere in the world any time (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink).
We indeed die with the cross in our hands. We bear lifes burdens with the cross in our hands. We live our lives with Christ as our guide and hope. Never forgetting our blessings and praises to the Lord.
You are very welcome. And, thank you to all who take the time to comment both good and bad. Just to know you have taken to time to listen is reward enough. God speed to all.
There will be plenty of such singing at Russian churches tomorrow (Orthodox Easter). I urge you to go to a Russian church near you -- it will blow you away! Have you ever been to a Russian church? It's an unforgettable experience. I am in Russia right now, so I will definitely go.
Pretty good recording, although they do go flat (you can really tell those poor basses have to sing an A instead of a B flat at the end lol). But then again, this, as well as the rest of the All-Night Vigil, is incredibly hard to sing, so can't really blame them!
Thanx for your comment. I heared this clip of yours one more time. Any once again - very good one. I may say that Rob Tenor is doing great on sacral music (from my personal opinion, better than the other melodies... Or is it becouse I just cant get enough of sacral vocal music...). Anyway, choir is great as well. A bit rush on singing, but sounds GREAT.
This is excellent...tenor and choir are first class. I listen to this work often, but I have yet to hear it in person..what a glorious day that will be.
Thank you for your comments, they are appreciated. If you can, please let your friends know about this video and the two others I currently have on YouTube. I need all the publicity I can get (wink, wink).
Thanks for your comment. No, I am not a fanatical Orthodox member, however, the composer Rachmaninov was a member of the Russian Orthodox church and this music was composed for use in the church. I cannot say if he was a "fanatic" or not, history does not tell us.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen to this wonderful composition and may I encourage you to listen to the entire "Vespers" as it is a beautiful work of music.
I dont understand German as well, and dont understand what this guy said...Anyway,Love what you said about Vespers.Vespers is my favourite of all music I ever heared, and listen to it very often.
Think that someone who is ''fanatic'',could never compose something like that(I am sure of it). This is a real peace of art.
Rachmaninoff wasnt fanatic(I would never say that). After he had to leave Russia, he had a huge home sickness :(
Rachmaninoff, thanx for blessing us with your Vespers Opus 37.
Yes, that is true. Rachmaninov was a true Russian, and for Russians, Orthodox Church is home. In fact, we call it "Mother Church". And we love it. When we fight, we fight for The Land and The Church. When we die, we die with a cross in our hand. And this music is mesmerizing.

A more accurate name is the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, not Redeemer.
The interior shot immediately before that is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in San Francisco.

This song echoes in my soul,
like an old cave,
amplifying the resonance,
shaking the foundations
that my troubles and griefs built upon to dust, and now my soul is free from the chains of hatred and shame, flying among the heavens.
Thank you
