BTW, Sofia made a mural like this in PR and there was not a single protest about it (not even church).

Do these women look like hookers? Yes and no. Many women can look like hookers who aren't. It depends on the context or setting. The problem with this mural is that there's not much setting or context shown so people seeing it may make the wrong assumptions about these women. On the streets these women will appear as hookers to some but put these same women in a club enviroment and they will appear as normal for the club.

Also,I saw an interview with Sofia Maldonado. Judging by her accent I figured that she wasn't raised in the U.S so she may not be familiar with how certain images of minorities are viewed here in the U.S especially if like I mentioned earlier the context of those images aren't known.

Her inspiration for the mural was to depict these under represented women through paintings of her memories from the differnet burroughs and the way she saw some of the women throughout the Caribbean dress, wear their hair, jewelry and go about their daily lives. Regardless of women's history month or not, the painting is not uplifting AT ALL in my opinion. Some of the women were painted bent over, legs wide, all obviously dressed like skanks instead of hard working mothers, daughters, etc. ??

According to Maldonado's interview with CNN, she specializes in female imagery and has been painting similar murals for over 10 yrs now. It just so happened that the painting of the mural was delayed and so the painting of the mural fell during women's history month. She already had the idea for the mural prior, it was not supposed to be a tribute to women's history month BUT Times Square chose to keep the mural there anyway.

For individuals who look at this mural & think that it is art & not offensive art need to get their heads examine. This Maldonado is a racist Hispanic seen by using the remark that 'Caribbean women look like this.' This depiction existed in her Pathological mind and manifested as how she truly feels about ethnicity. This is not praising Black & Latina women this is degradation to them.
