Okay... since I have finished laughing over your wife's comment... hehehe... I will show this to Lilia's Froestry teacher and maybe he can tell... except... what state or province was this specimen found? That would help. =)
hehehehe, lol, your wife shared a video with me , i have yet to look at it, i will probably look at it tommorrow, so if you will tell her that, i would appreciate it, i just have been on another project and so i've only been responding to comments this evening, thanks :) -GIL
My wife is a constant source of entertainment for me:) She really is the smart one of the two of us. I was clever enough to fool her into marrying me.
Take it all to your local Ag agent--they'll know. When my parents moved into their current house, they had the ag agent come out and take a walk around the property, telling them what was what and how to take care of it.
I've have taken some insects to the Iowa State University Extension office, they are very good in the entomology area of study. Until i saw Pinks video tho, it had not really occurred to me to check on the trees. I found what I thought was a bumble bee once that was larger than normal size and totally black. It turned out to be some kind of rare horse fly that imitates bumble bees.
They are one of the cleanest insects actually. There are some native folks in mexico who harvest flies from salt marshes, dry them, grind them, and make a kind of fly tortilla from them. It is a delicacy.
That looks like a silver maple to me. I just had a quick look in my tree book; and I didn't see another variety of maple with leaves like that. It's easy to tell a silver maple on a tree; when the wind blows the leaves over and the sun hits them, they are very silver.
So it must be not just the variety of tree, but also your location, that attracts the butterflies. I'm gonna have to do some research on that, now I'm curious! :)
It was awesome. The tree itself has shaded diameter of about 50 to 60 foot. If you imagine it as a globe that had to have been hundreds of thousands of Monarch butterflies.
Ladypn says there are around or over 1000 varities of Maple and I find that astounding. Such an unexpectedly successful tree species. These 4 we have around the house shade us very well in the morning and the evening, but our south yard is open. I want to plant a tree there but I am getting resistence from the management...
what color are the leaves of the other in the fall? There are over ONE THOUSAND species of Maples! But I actually think they may both be silver maples. How tall are the trees and how old? You've got to give me details if my mind is to reach the correct conclusion! :)
They are probably about 40 plus years old. I could not touch fingers reaching around the trunk of any of them. The are roughly two and a half storys high. The leaves are a rich tan in the fall like doe skin.
Cool, the silver maple variety I was used to seeing when I was a child was a very irredescent minty green on one side and the other side was a deep forest green. Very striking contrast and very very beautiful to watch in the wind.
Love the red nail polish you've got there, Lord Tempist. I guess with your sock on it, we've not been able to truly appreciate your manicure until now. :)
Just popping in to see how this is doing. :)
