  • The ending of the video was wrong. The Excelsior 1-3 projects took place at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. He landed in the desert, not the ocean.

  • INCREDIBLE!!! "The jump was part of an Air Force study on the effects of high altitude on humans and to develop a safe ejection system for jet pilots. During the ascent, the pressure seal in Kittinger’s right glove failed, exposing his hand to frostbite and inflating it to twice its normal size. After jumping, Kittinger free fell for more than four and a half minutes; the entire descent took nearly fourteen minutes."

  • BOARDS OF CANADA

  • i just wish they had the gopro back then.

  • baddesst dude ever

  • now people know to much so they afraid to fly to the moon due safety , back then

people didnt know much about things so they did a lots of crazy shit.... and yeah

i want to get in time machine and get back cause it seams that people trust more that computer says then their gut... now stupid computers dictates what we are capable to do and its so sad cause we are much more then a bunch of stupid data!

  • Joe Kittinger:

    Biggest BALLS ON EARTH.

  • Comment removed

  • Wouldn't he been burned ....?...?....?....?!

  • The guy left in the balloon: "So, who is coming to pick me up?"

  • BOARDS OF CANADA

  • OH MY GOSHH!!!!!! U PASSED 4 LAYERS OF CLOUDS AND JUMPED FROM OUTER SPACE(ALMOST) yooooooooooooooo!~!!!!!!!!~!!!!!~~~!!!!! DAMN!!!!

  • I'm a little surprised no one has said who this is. It's Colonel Joseph William Kittinger. Wikipedia has a pretty nice bio of him, a truly legendary aviator. The article also includes a bit about Project Excelsior.

  • He was in SPACE! haha no just kidding

  • ooh anyone know the artist/s who made the music for this clip?

  • @theadophilus

    Boards of canada

    by dayvan cowboys

  • Watching this was like being born again. In a good way lol.

  • looks peaceful up there

  • we only see one man jumpping, so who the f-ck is doing the recording does anyone know?

  • @yzk1970

Well actually cameras are the things that take video not human beings lol they were attatched to the balloon and his suit im sure ect ect

  • Whatcwascthebpoint?

  • this guy either has balls of steel or this is Chuck Norris... He fucking jumped out of space (not exactly but still :) ). He also los one of his gloves going up, so his hand was swawling, oups

  • holy, i would be scared shitless, i magine the view to the pitchblack space there :O

  • why don't we see the stars?

    Just sayn

  • that man is the most lucky motherfucker alive

  • For you "we didn't go to the moon " people. Do you think the Russians, our enemies, would have kept quiet if it were a hoax !?! That was a MAJOR victory for democracy. Come on ! Get off the Mary Jane and think !!

  • Gigondas brass balls.

  • Any higher and it would be more like an atmospheric reentry then a parachute drop!

  • is this real? Whos the guy jumping?

  • Well there was no way down but to jump.

  • Not many frontiers left...

  • blato not real

  • balls of steel....

  • haha lol what about if an airplane come in the way ? ;)

  • Apparently when he was decending his glove tore and his hand swelled up to gigantic size.

  • Must be like the same day u came into the earth. lol

  • awesome, you can actually enjoy the freefall before its time to pull the cord. Anyone know how long does it take to fall back to earth?

  • @mysteryscience3000 This was a 14 minute descent. The astronaut was recently honored at the Smithsonian. He is quoted saying that he didn't have time to enjoy it, he was a very busy man the entire time.

  • respect

  • several people have tried to beat joe's record, but have succeeded and a few died.

pls write your congressman and ask that Aug 16th (the day he jumped) to be named Joe Kittinger day!!! Lets give the man his proper recongnition

  • the song is called Dayvan Cowboy by Boards of Canada, without doubt my favourite band in the whole world. You should give them a listen!

  • whats the name of the song playing?

  • This is the best sound track of all the other re-posts. Perfect.

  • I've been on the moon. On a vitial website and it's amazing!!!

  • Wow absolutly amazing. Not only did he set a world record. But he got to see the earth from a point of view very few people ever will.

  • Why hasnt anyone done anywhere near this again? This was 1960!! ! COme on!!!

  • The scariest sense freedom ever

  • thats beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

  • u cant skydive from space u would just float away unles u get to earths atmosphere

  • @rockbandguitarlover

theres this neat little invention called "gravity" you should try it sometime

  • @33ltd i know thats why i said unless u get to the earths atmosphere which has gravity

  • @rockbandguitarlover

so whats the point to even post, if you "knew" he was in the earths atmosphere, pretty much you posted to post. nothing else, you had nothing to ask and nothing to say. you just wanted to prove nothing to no one.

  • @rockbandguitarlover lol no offense but you should do some research on gravity, the atmosphere doesnt make gravity, it has nothing to do with it, the moon is in earths gravity, but not the atmosphere.... when astronauts are orbiting earth theres just as much gravity there as there is on the ground, they are just going so fast AROUND the earth that they dont fall, kinda like a bucket of water swung upside down, the water stays in :)

  • Makes no sence. It's practacly like jumping from space. He woulda burned up or froze to death.

  • @XxluigifanxX You only burn up if you're coming fast out of orbit. He's only going a couple of hundred miles per hour at most

  • @jonfraz Joseph Kittinger fell as fastest 988 km/h (614 mph) and he experienced temperatures as low as −70 °C (-94 °F). The jump was from 31,333 m (102,800 ft). He had what looks like a space suit on, but still frozed one hand. Se Project Excelsior on Wikipedia.

  • @jonfraz he actually broke the sound barrier, because the air is so thin up there it didnt slow him down as much as a lower jump

  • @XxluigifanxX

    #1- specialized suit

there is no number 2 thats it gtfo

  • @XxluigifanxX You dumbass...Find something more about this jump and then coment....

This is real lol it was in 1960 or so

  • wow! i wonder how he solved the problem with cold temperatures and low o² ammount?

  • @2Mazed

Simple: Pressure suit. Yes, they existed way back then.

  • why didn't he catch fire like a meteor

  • @hugmast

he came in at a slower rate.

  • saw this in science class! awesome =3

  • YES! Ive survived...im going to live im passing through the clouds and ...O shit all i can see is water -.-"

  • Must have taken you a long time to cut this from a bands music video and leave in the music... good job dude 203 thousand views off your hard work

  • holy shit, that is INTENSE.

  • about the time he hits the clouds is when he felt ANY wind resistance...before that he said it was a was smooth ride...has if he wasn't moving...its the part of the earth's atmosphere where this happens...can't remember which...

  • @bally28

He jumped from the mid-stratosphere (answer to "can't remember which").

  • @norman4lyf thanks!

  • @bally28 Wow... How many feets, do you think?

  • @fa11ingstar 102800 feet

  • @fa11ingstar about 102,800 feet

  • it`s like a dream ...

  • You need oxygen, something to protect you from the cold and... balls.

  • EarthDiving

  • im sure you would die! i agree with 'coolblingrock101', you would float off if you were in space and im not being ignorant, so stop being mean!!

  • @ARachel1995

You ARE an ignorant fool. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that it didn't happen. Wow, you're just like the moon landing(s) hoaxers.

  • @norman4lyf

so and what do you know about the landing on the moon? Were you there? Did you see it happening? Did you plant the flag? I'm not saying it happened or it didn't, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to offend you, but I'm just saying, we got all influenced by what the media is telling us... Watch the documentary 'Dark side of the moon' please :)

  • @MegaSjaaktrekhaak:

People have placed a mirror on the moon and lasers have been reflected off it to measure the distance to the moon. There is absolutely no question we have been to the moon. I hope you didn't recommend Dark Side of the Moon as a way to convince people of the hoax. That would be very ironic.

    Mooie naam trouwens :p

  • @ARachel1995 Yeah but he's not in space...

  • @ARachel1995 idiot he was only 20 miles high

  • you would not DIE. AS long as you had the proper gear. at that speed and altitude without it. Your blood would boil as you decend..... this is the very real future.......Marine Corps!!!!!!

  • erer

  • @ARachel1995

You're speaking out of ignorance. This skydive actually did happen, and it's very easy to understand.

  • @ARachel1995

    Perhaps you are trolling?

  • @ARachel1995

it is real you IDIOT search it on google -.-

    idiot

  • @ARachel1995 Read about it, research . It is very real.

Captain Joe Kittinger deserves his honors..

  • if he was in space he will drift of but your the man!!!

  • @coolblingrock101

What makes you think that he would drift off? Satellites in orbit around Earth are, in fact, in space, yet they don't "drift off" because they are kept in orbit by Earth's gravity.

  • pff thats sick

  • I think if that was in space he would fly up!

  • @kjsc219

And why do you think that?

  • wow!! he's the man! going to jump this saturday)

  • makes my hands sweat just watching that

    especially around 0:28 and forward

  • boards of canada- dayvan cowboy

  • I would have been to pussy to do something like this, Im not afraid to admit lol

  • i envy him. he has probably experienced the closest likeness man will ever have to truely flying. dope shit.

  • Oh my f*****g god. That guy has bucky-balls.

  • name song plz? :D

  • talk about scared of highets

  • its called dayvan cowboy

  • That tune is boards of Canada.

  • Ahh man this guy is so lucky

  • Joseph W. Kittinger you ROCK!!! :D

(well...I against of suicide, and I'm happy with my life, but I would jump out from that high, evenif I don't have parachute...)

    buy the way..:

    WHATS the SONG???? :P

  • we watched this in science today

  • 3 tours in Nam shot down tortured by commies Great Guy

  • You are one of the bigges tdumbasses in the enitre world his scientific experiement protected the US from the USSR gained valuable info and was a breakthrough in exploration and feats. Go fuck your dumb ignorat self with a flamethrower

  • @UnderArmour818

    Damn Finnish!

  • whoa,must be fun doing this^^

  • @desjaraah what jumping from 102,800FT youd never catch me up there LMAO, he has got BALLS OF STEEL :P

  • Is this footage from Project Excelsior II or III?

  • III

  • my wife paid me the same for my birthday.., that was cool, but a bit long...

  • That is neat.

  • how did he breath if he dosnt have an oxegen mask

  • He has one on

  • he said that as he was falling his clothes didnt ripple at all...he just sliced through....said it was a unique feeling....crazy

  • i'd laugh if after all that time falling, his parachute didn't open, haha

  • I swear if you fall from space onto Earth you catch on fire??

  • only if your entering the atmospere he was already in it

  • 13 min 45 sec

  • wonder how long it took to get down

  • 4.5 minutes

  • @JackMcGuitar 14 minutes

  • @JackMcGuitar 51 minutes =D

  • @JackMcGuitar 15min =)

  • @JackMcGuitar about 15 min...

  • was this guy in space?

  • No, Nearly though

  • thts crazy

  • He traveled at over 600 miles per hour and holds the record for fastest flight without an airplane, longest free fall of 4.9 minutes and highest drop. These records have held for over 40 years.

  • Is that rite 600 miles an hour i kno regular jumps are like 150mph terminal velocity but wouldnt that kill u on some level any links u have would be appreciated and a interesting read its AMAZING! THANKS take care.

  • The jump was made by Capt. Joseph W. Kittinger in 1960 and he rose to 102,800 feet (31,330 m) and he reached a velocity of 714 mph (1142 km/h)

  • Comment removed

  • 714 or 614 mph, it's still amazingly fast.

  • Thats nuts cant imagine the experience theirs few PPL u can call real HEROES like soldiers hes def. one of em.

  • You're from the US, arn't you? :P

  • @cameron91101 clown

  • Sorry,i dont respond 2 PEDOPHILE FAGGOTs,dont b a gutless PUSSY.

  • 0:25 - Jumps out and goes in to orbit...

  • I dunno man...I don't want to call fake, but from THAT altitude...how did he no burn up in the earths atmosphere?

  • @voltshock99

Because he was not going fast enough. When satellites reenter Earth's atmosphere, they are going many times faster than he was. Also, even though he jumped from the edge of space, the atmosphere was still quite thick at his altitude. This meant that the atmosphere gradually slowed him down. Satellites enter the atmosphere in just seconds, causing lots of drag.

  • Okay, I guess that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

  • also the rockets have fire coming out the back which spreads out over the body of them making them hot, because at about 150km up it is pure oxygen. the sattelites travel at around 500 miles an hour. joke. im not stupid

  • @TheWhiteOwl23

LOL you should have seen the response that I was about to send you. It had all the facts and stuff. Then I saw that you said "joke"...which originally looked like "no joke".

  • I woulda just tucked my arms in and gone SOOOOOOOO fast.

  • and u would have burned up soooooooooooooo fast! ROFL THAT BE COOL

  • he was Xtreme before anybody even thought of the concept.

  • you'd just pretend to be superman and do his flying pose LMAO EPIC! so much fun

  • and how high was that jump?? 80,000ft i say??

  • 102.000 feet

  • 31km upwards

  • Boards of Canada rock! I love this song and video.

  • The opening shock had to be intense. Ive done a C-5 at 2500 and i thought my gutz were gonna come out.

  • @ sm3llyd3c

its not about he danger its about the feeling and what you see

  • cant imagine how f*cking scary and what if parashute didnt open :O F*cking crazy scary

  • if the parachute didnt open he would hit the ground doing about 150mph

  • im surprized its only 150 i bet its faster

  • remember the air density gets thicker the lower you go. so he ends up slowing down to terminal velocity unless he tucks in his arms and legs. streamline him self the he could hit at about 260mph.

  • Just the fact that he even went up that high is insane lol

  • yeah no shit. i got to meet the man about 10 years ago and the only injuries he got was his right glove depressurized and his hand swelled up.

  • you guys are discussing how hard he would hit the ground ahhahaha, crazy

  • He is jumping of a parachute platform from space! EXTREME!!!!! Must of cost a fortune though.

  • such an amazing feat. you got to think about the tim he done that in aswell. Skydiveing was still in somewat of its early stages, and he had only jumped 50 times before! 4 mins 36 secounds of freefall at 650mph....amazing!!

  • It must have taken him so long to land.

  • thats just beautiful i would love to do that one day

  • To me, if a jump is high enough to kill you, it doesn't really matter how much higher you go, you're in the same amount of danger jumping from 1000ft than you are at 100000ft.

  • true has one man said

"its not the fall that kills you its the sudden stop at the bottom"

  • uh uh, its "its nnot the fall that kills you, its the sudden decceleration" weird, i read that today

  • that not completly true ... at 100k feet there are other issues than falling to death .. which can kill you like, the temperature, spinning, no or low pressure, low oxygen

  • its not just about the hight. Its about pushing limts. we need daredevils and risktakers. ... but there is more danger jumping that hight....i.e Low oxygen, temp,

  • its on the edge of the EARTH!! wow?

  • fucking shit XD they aws nearly the space XD
