I love this movie--the dogs are the real stars. But one thing doesn't make sense to me. Why didn't one guy stay behind with the dogs? They didn't all have to go with that science guy. One could have stayed behind and waited with the dogs. Maybe they thought that it would have been too dangerous for a man. But then, if that was true, they didn't expect that the dogs would live. Pretty sad how the dogs were treated--at least they should have been unchained.

@qwnyx ya it is pretty cool that they survive that long, they can withstand the weather cause of there double layered coats, there have been reportings of siberian huskies surviving in -50. and alaskan malamutes can surive a little lower its really facinating. there cool dogs :)

In Eight Below there are two Alaskan Malamutes (Buck and Shadow) and six Siberian Huskies (Maya, Max, Truman, Dewey, Shorty and Old Jack). Each actor-dog had help from other dogs who performed stunts and pulled sleds. In all, over 30 dogs were used to portray the film's eight canine characters. Max and Old Jack were played by dogs seen in Disney's Snow Dogs.[2]

actually every dog had a stunt double but thats for only the sleding and other stunts but the acting and leaping is from the original dogs. and out of all there is only 16 dogs used!
