I've already posted this same question on other Boat on the River uploads - What is the message of this song. Somebody replied that Styx is a river in Greek Mythology. Any further details? Why does he want to go down on that river so he won't cry out anymore?
"Styx" is the mythological river in Greece that seperates the dead from the alive... It is supposed that "Charon" (the one who is responsible for the deaths") transfers the dead men with his boat across this river and takes them to the "world beneath" (sorry for some bad translations maybe, but I only know the Greek terms...)
this song taks me back to 30 years ago ...in 1980 i was study in bulgaria near dunav river ............this is one of the golden songs in the golden time of 80,s
This was filmed in Brussels, Belgium. Most of Belgium speaks Dutch if memoery serves me right. It appears to be Dutch being spoken in these comments to me. This is one of my all time favorite Styx songs. They are a great group. I'm glad they still tour.
That's not true. Nearly half of Belgium speaks French indeed, but there's only a small percentage of Belgians that speak Flemish. Like 40% speaks Dutch.
all my family love styx and my son just loves the way tommy and j.y play their guitars, and how chuck and ricky play their bass'. he has not commented on larry's keyboard skills or on todds fantastic lightning drumming. and we all cant wait to see them play live again! Keep it up lads
Dennis was jealous and wanted the whole thing to be about him and he was really trying to give these guys a very theatrical band and his voice training seemed to mess up the sound of the music. The same thing happened to David Cassidy when he tried to make a comeback. His voice training messed up how he sang and therefore the sounds of the songs from our past were messed up too. Dennis is a power hungry person who only wants to be the main attraction in his one-man-band.
Everybody is unique... and has their own talents. Gowan was a solo singer in Canada originally.. remember the song.. "Criminal Minds".. around the '80's?
Actually.. I am very surprised he got a WONDERFUL gig to be in a GREAT BAND like Styx. He REALLY got lucky.. but I DO think Gowan is very talented. People just has to get used to a new different singer that's all.
James Young is an original member and is still rockin. He and Tommy Shaw are holding them together real good. I saw them not long ago and they still got it. Their keyboard player can really play, but probably shouldn't sing.
Dennis was thrown out because he couldn't tour. He suffered from a virus that made him sensitive to light, so he couldn't tour.
Also, before he was pushing the band to the theatrical side like on Kilroy was here, and Tommy and James wanted to go back to their rock roots. Then when Dennis got sick, was the perfect time to throw him out.
Thanks. I have been living an extremely sheltered existance over the past 17 yrs. and am now only starting to come out of the cave I've been living in.
hey guys, maybe that's because i'm italian, but the mandolin sounds so easy to me. i really love styx, tommy shaw and all the other guys wrote wonderful songs

to answer your earlier questions about the other band members...
John Panozzo, the original drummer past away in 96.
Chuck, his bother, and the groups original bass player is suffering with the aids virus and only does select dates, and partial shows at that.
Dennis Deyoung was removed from the band because he refused to tour. He has a solo career going.
so the new guys are
Todd Sucherman on the drums
Lawrence Gowan on keys
and Ricky Phillips on the bass.
Styx are the best!!!
