tom wasn't in the movie because the movies were, unfortunately, made for the people who had never even read or heard of the books. the movie was not made for the hard core Tolkien fans/scholars. while the movies were amazing, the only fantasy genre movie to ever win an Oscar (let only 9!) and are worth watching over and over again (extended only lol screw the theatrical versions) the story was butchered because a lot of the population especially the younger generations don't read
i've seen the movies, and ive read the first book, and am starting the second. I too wonder why in the world Tom Bombadil was not in the movie! this was a huge mistake made by the producer. He would've made the first movie a little more enjoyable in my opinion ;)
the reason he wasnt in the movie is because FOR THE MOVIE he didnt work... FOR THE BOOKS he did. learn to respect the fact that not everything can be put into the movie.
IT reminds me of this one time when I was 4 riding the train and a pooped a little and I tried to hide it but a little piece fell down my pants onto the floor and some lady saw it and then her dog ate it.
Agree hes such a good character.. Really wish Tolkien had been able to illuminate more of Toms life before passing on. He left to much mystery in it and I want closure haha.
@Humpahna Yeah, but there's the issue, they had to pace it differently because it was a film, as opposed to something you could read and absorb on your own (not in a theater). I remember Interviews where they stated that they felt the films were too short too put everything they wanted in, and they run about the 3 hour mark. Honestly I think they did a great job, and some things had to be cut realistically, so I'm happy they were able to keep in what they had.
bobsmith i think like you too good explained. but i think tom bombadil is very important in the story of lotr but right you said its more grown up like silmarillion or else books
Tom was not in the movie because he did not progress the story and would have made the movie like an hour longer. I agree it would have been cool to see him there but alas Tom was only a literary divice created to gentlytransition you from the childlike world of the hobbit to the very grown up world of lotr....i went way to deep there
@Tabla461 It couldnt have been. The movies were already longer than what Newline wanted, and Tom Bombadil, despite being a popular charecter, was not key to the plot, indeed he was completely unessecery asfar as the plot goes. He is a fun part of the book and is what makes the first part of LOTR so fun.
@Tabla461 I think Tom wasn't in the movie because he doesn't really fit the mood of the movie right before the hobbits reach Bree. Plus, I kind of like the fact that he stays only a literary entity. After all, he was in "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" way before the Books were written. Even Tolkein himself said it's best that somethings stay a mystery. I think Tom is one of them.
@Tabla461 Because the movies were already incredibly long and the idea of Tom Bombadil was the easiest concept to cut from the story as it would have been one of the hardest for the readers to grasp and the least relevant to the facets of the story that Jackson was attempting to illuminate.
very few remember Tom. Perhaps that was the secret of his success in surviving the chaos he knew was coming.Love Nickel Creek but have not found a post of "The Hand Song" Would love to see Sara sing this.
lol his secret was he was so strong no one wanted to mess with him, lol, that and he was secluded ;). but he put the ring on and took it off with ease that shows something
damn that was awesome

Agreed. If they leave Beorn out of the new Hobbit 2-part movie series I'll be upset. He's my favorite character from that book. Beorn is a badass.

Tabla461 3 years ago 32
if you watch the extended version of LOTR he talks about how its not a part of the book that "moves the story on." I was upset too :(.
pepsi101 3 years ago 5
yeah I have the extended version and I was sad when I saw it wasn't in it.
Tom Bombadil is awsome. He's a sort of an Elf, Gandalf and Tolkien himself mix. A kind of anti-Sauron
karzoff 3 years ago 6
yeah, they kinda sat around for three chapters or so. tom was awesome and i wanted him to be in the movie too.

I think Treebeard had some of Toms lines, but Tom himself wasnt in it coz of moeny/time issues.

@Tabla461 i was angry too but then i realized...Tom is too big for the movie. they couldn't possibly have done his character properly

@followingbreadcrumbs True, Tom is very important, but not so much in the trilogy. He has his own stories.
