i accidentally when i clicked on pick eve folder or whatever instead of finding the eve folder i exited out and now every time i try to open it up it crashes saying Triexporter 2009 has stopped working.. i tried re-downloading it and everything.. what should i do to fix this
By far the best tut on triexporter. Did you kow that you can also do the exact same thing with the normal map and give your texture more depth. How in the world does 3ds know how to perfectly place the texture on the model? Especially after you have changed the format of it?
Thanks man, helped a lot. I wasn't aware that you needed to add the same texture multiple times in TriExporter, that's whats been keeping me back from getting it to work.
I have really really big problem..... when i downloaded the program it flashed and when i try to start it it does nothing , i mean nothing ! I see that you are with windows 7 so am i , so can you please help me .
what you've done so far is pretty basic, and i can do all of that. my concern is when i want to create top notch renders with advanced lighting as well. basically, this includes stuff like bump/normal maps, specular maps, self illumination etc. now, i know how to extract all the different textures from the dffuse map itself, but the part im stumped on is the part on how to change the colours of the textures (via masks perhaps?) so they mimic ingame correctly
I followed your tutorial, and I got one problem. The TGA-file I apply as material isn't oriented right. Can it have something to do with the .obj file format I mentioned earlier?
@SageNTitled with the OBJ file, you need to convert the model to an editable poly before applying the texture..try that and see if it works :) just select the whole model, right click and click convert to > editable poly
@SomichOG734 Thanks for that info, could be useful later on. However, I managed to solve the problem by exporting without textures at first. Apparently I only get the error message when importing a .3ds-file which was exported together with a texture. I then have to export another model to get access to the textures.
@SageNTitled hm, interesting..good to know though! thanks! you can also use tri-exported to just export the .dds files, by highlighting them and clicking extract file/directory..that will get you the textures out without having to apply them to a random model.
Awesome tutorial! Only problem I had was that 3DS couldn't read the .3ds-file for some reason. Although it worked with the .obj file format. Hope it doesn't makes any difference.
what have i done wrong when i try import it into 3d studio max it just says im proper file format can you help me thanks :)

Holy fuck, I tried multiple other ways, even after watching this.
I really really thought 3dsm 2012 was smarter, but nope. your way is the only way :D
IT'S AWESOME, atm. It looks like I can get this to work even with 3dsm.

@Perzsnake
To fix that, open your register editor (regedit.exe) and go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Triexporter
Then add the path in the "EVE" string to your EVE folder using double \\
For example y have EVE in my E: drive. So my path is E:\EVE but i have to put E:\\EVE in that value.
After this, the program will stop crashing and you'll be able to work with it.
Hope it helps. ;)

how do you use 2 textures on 1 model using this method?
Trying to use Nyx model, but uses 2 textures and so I've made 2 textures and light pngs using your method.

great tutorial!
Just wanted to comment: 3dsmax itself can do everything you did in photoshop and dds tools, so basically you need only triexplorer and 3dsmax.
Still, my max 2010 couldn't import some .3ds ships (and some imported with no problem)

Hi there!
First and foremost you are a saviour! I've been trying to put together a short clip or film sequence for eve as an advertisement for my alliance.
I've only ran into one problem thus far and that is:
Photoshop costs, as does 3d max, so i've got both on trial... any pointers for finding free versions?
Also, when i 'drag and drop' the tga file of the orca (i followed your tutorial religiously) all i get is a grey and white shaded box! Help!!

Thanks man, this is the tut that finally clicked for me.
If you do another, can you cover opacity and spec maps, and the .red flles? I'm going to try to figure it out.
Thanks again
