  • To all of my fellow guitar players, is there a noticeable quality advantage to playing an older or newer GB-10? Should I continue looking for the older piece or go ahead and buy a new one?

  • @928Nupe Well as far as i know, the newer ones are made in Korea. The older ones are made in Japan. Unmatched craftsmanship for the money. The new ones are nice, but the older ones are in a league of their own. Ive played both, though I own neither =).

  • cool..:)))

  • George Benson is the Michael Jordan of jazz guitar

  • beautiful indeed... beauty put into music

  • wholly craep!

  • bwah ironraider if you get into jazz then wes montgomery name will be as familiar as buying a pack of cigarettes from your favorite store

  • @SirFrancisBurton lol i was being sarcastic.. if you're a jazz guitarist and you don't know wes then there's something wrong.. that's like a basketball player saying they don't know who magic johnson is

  • High level of musicianship!!!

  • It's very rare nowadays you'd see George Benson play a Gibson Super 400.

  • @kjwilkguitar It's a Gibson Johnny Smith :)

  • he has more genius flowing thru one thumb, than my poor brain could extrapolate out of 3 bodies. too cool.

  • ROTFL!!! @thailow117 lol musicologist too funny... I wonder who that Wes Montgomery guy is myself! Hahaha

  • LOL! George Plays with the Thumb like Wes Montgomery here!

  • Bireli !!!

  • I cannot comprehend the awesomeness of George Benson

  • beautiful tone...

  • this is disgusting. so EASY. everything he does sounds and looks so amazing and easy. complete and absolute mastery. i'm half gay for george benson... ha

  • super!!!!!!!!

  • This is absolutely amazing. One day I hope to meet Mr. Benson.

  • you can't beat this, the Mr. Benson is a true master of his instrument.

  • bravooooooooooooooo

  • Simplemente maravilloso................

  • This is MAGIC ...

  • listen to the sounds he is making at 2:08 and 2:11 !

not the sound of his guitar, the sound that is coming out of himself.

my guitar teacher does exactly the same! i try hard not to laugh about it for about 6 years!

  • I know nothing about guitar, but does Mr. Benson only play with his thumb? That's sick!

  • Amen!Total(trained) ear. There's no thought process to it.He plays what He hears in his head over the changes. That's what jazz musicians do.They play off each other."If you think you stink".In the end it all comes down to your ear,not theory, not progressions(only to learn fingerboard) and especially not licks(tab for jazz guitar).I don't think so.Ear training only.Wish we all had beautiful souls like George.

  • Thank you so much!

  • Okey thank you! I would like to learn more jazz..Soloing, progressions etc..But i'm not sure where to start. Thanks for posting this!

  • Is Benson often using the major scale?

  • George plays fast and beautiful; he sounds sweet to the ears, his guitar touch is just amazing.

  • XD listen closely between 2:00 and 2:15 you can hear him grumbling.

  • yeah, not half as annoying as k.jarrett's grotesque screeching.

more like oscar peterson: it blends into the music, but it fits.

  • @thailow117

Though I agree Jarrett or Gould mumbling can be quite annoying I would not use such a tough word as grotesque to qualify them :P

  • @SirFrancisBurton I may have indulged in the moment, and I am nt the greatest fan of Jarrett. You're right though, it came through a bit too harsh consdering their abilities and talent. cheers, t

  • @thailow117

Agreed! But above all thanks to you for the video of Benson, it is ... amazing

  • Alright people:

    please no more

wes montgomery vs george benson or comments on his superb thiumb playing.

we watch this clip for the same reasons basically, lets reconsider if our opinion is what the world needed to hear/read. in the meantime, we could just enjoy and then move on to watching jack mc duff & david newman ripping it up funkwise!

  • that thumb is from another planet

  • no matter who you are....you just can not touch him....his phrasing set him apart ...on top where every body can look up to him and fix yourself musically...thanx

  • actually he took a lot of his phrasing from wes montgomery..

  • it does not matter.... benson is way much faster and better than wes.... he picked up from where wes has left off....and.....because of wes we have benson........respect for the jazz elderly...

  • Not meaning to offend you, but you have not heard enough Wes...it is not a matter of faster anyway...guitarists tend to get into speed traps for the sake of it, but it is in the breathing and frankly whatever you have to say. To hear Benson play Danny Boy is not to hear the melody at all, but just something his brain cells make him do...watch Wes play "Impressions"on You Tube and you will get a lesson in how to shift gears...listen to Wes play South of The Border and Unit 7. Wes chord solos too.

  • i respect your opinion, though i disagree. wes can play just as fast, but i believe he chooses not to because he is a more tasteful player. not speed oriented. like the david gilmour of jazz. it's not the speed, it's the feel. and wes created this style of playing and masterd this feel. people like metheny and benson took most of their moves from wes.

  • woah! from what i can see he's playing most of it with just his thumb = one fuckin pro thumb

  • brasilian music

  • Magnificent.

  • It's really amazing how someone can create something so beautiful that can touch both humans and animals alike...it's really something to think about. Thanks for posting.

  • people bought this as entertainment but benson is an artist.. the difference between art and entertainment lays in how deep is the freedom of the "message". you only can enjoy what youve understand but theres much more inside.

  • maggggggnifique....

  • Indeed..Beautiful!

  • Christian!!!

  • Wow ! he´s pickin with his thumb !!! Amazing speed with a thumb....

  • @Dorianjazzenblues

well, obviously he is a protege of wes montgomery's...

  • WOW - This must have been Pre0Ibanez. That looks like a Johnny Smith Gibson???

    Ron

  • it is a gibson johnny smith, but not pre-ibanez. note how they try to avoid showing the headstock.

  • Looks like a Gibson L5

  • gibson johnny smith, believe me.

  • Yea your right the pick up gives it away-thanks for the post.

  • joe sample gets down with that piano

  • even if he was a show off, thas why you practice your fingers to the bone for. so every one can see and hear you at your best! this cat is crazy with

  • If you think Geo Benson is a show off..you have some soul searching to do........just sayin'

  • That is what I call Feeling on the guitar

  • exactly.

  • so... calm pleasent is to listen to these tones, actually he will play in Yerevan, Armenia on November 12... I got ticket... so I long for this performance

  • Sounds like heaven...

  • Wonderful music! It's a pleasure to listen. How sweet the tones can be coming from his hands.

  • No I don't think he's a show off. He's generous w/other players that share the stage w/him(Chet AtkinsEarl Klugh etc...)

I do think that he knows that he really doesn't have any peers. I think there are brilliant guitar players but none that have his level of mastery. He can play completely from his stream of consciousness and his solos always seem to have a destination. My personal feeling is that we're looking at THE greatest guitarist of all time right here.

  • dude, i didnt mean to give your comment a thumbs down.ive had a few too many.George rox my sox...yeah,but still,my bad.

  • i think, that at this level, you cannot compare. can say the same about f.e. joe pass or wes, and several others. when some players reach a certain level of proficiency, it's all about personal taste. so.. wouldn't go so far to call him THE greatest, but obviously one of the greatest in history. and he's you're right, he's got a nice personality =]

  • Hey guys i'm a fan of George Benson=) but I have a question. Is George Benson a show off? I heard somebody say this, I just wish that it's not true, cause it breaks my heart=(

    what do you think?

  • what do you care what someone else thinks? if you like him, be happy about it!

  • the master at play!

  • genio

  • looks like Christian McBride on Bass and Joe Sample on keys?

  • you are absolutely right. thx for your comment

  • haha! i love his expression when he fills the gap between each note. Very original of Benson..5 star...

  • i want that thumb ! lol

  • best of Wes Montgomery Nat King Cole's singing Stevie Wonder and all the jazz guitar greats like Joe Pass Herb Ellis Barney Kessel Charlie Christian Django, etc such a great and tasteful player..

  • fela kuti

  • how is fela kuti a guitarist?

EVERYBODY: Please no more coments on BuffalSoldier0220, ok?

    I'll have them deleted otherwise.

  • its strange that the guitar as a musical instrument did not fit in much with jazz music till George.

  • thx, for the comment, but i might correct you on this.

think: herb ellis (oscar peterson), barney kessel, CHARLIE CHRISTIAN, Wes Montgomery, Eddie Lang, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Freddie Green, Tiny Grimes. The list goes on and on.

Gut George is superb, true, and i am a deep admirer of his music.

    cheers,

    t

  • django??joe pass??:))

  • there were many great jazz guitarist well before George Benson - Charlie Christian, Django Reindhart, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Grant Greene, Tal Farlow, Kenny Burrell,

  • hands down my favorite jazz guitarist.

  • bravo george e band !

  • I must say this is one of the best pieces of this music I have ever heard and it really brings tears to the eyes! George is simply the best musician ever!

  • Lately', by stevie wonder. that's a beautiful song....

  • george benson is reincarnated Wes. "Willow weep for me" ring any bells?

  • hes as good as Wes using the thumb!

  • Wes had a corn on his thumb, which gave his sound that point. He would get one sound for the soft parts, and then that point by using the corn. That's why no one will ever match Wes. And his thumb was double-jointed. He could bend it all the way back to touch his wrist, which he would do to shock people

  • Joe Sample on piano......

  • I can't stop watching this vid...awsome

  • Ive only seen one player to equal him... Ralph Russo... rest in peace my friend..

  • I really like george benson's fell and style. I have seen him live a couple of times. I really like to try and learn how he fingers and slurs scales. It makes the guitar sound more like a sax.

  • beautiful!!!! love this stuff

  • How can you play that fast with your thumb

  • ever heard of wes montgomery?

  • Such a talent! Incredible stuff!

  • Benson puts the clazz to jazz, he is always such an inspidation and such a champion of music of all styles. He has inspired me as much as Hendrix has!

  • Benson is such cool cat. Really tasetful

  • Tasteful is precisely the word that came to my mind too :) Benson, what can be said, he's beyond great

  • Beatifull both

  • Benson was born to play. After 31 years of playing (originally influenced mostly by benson and martino), I still can't get over how beautiful he plays. There is just something he has over every player that no matter what line he plays it sounds so sweet coming out of his hands. God bless you Benson,

  • muy buen video gracias por subirlo se disfruta mucho el talento de el Sr. Benson, oye este video es de algun dvd o algo para conseguirlo?o de donde lo conseguiste que lo quiero tener completo gracias bye

  • noticed how the cameraman is trying to avoid filming the headstock? lol

Ibanez must be pissed seeing him playing that Gibson something hollowbody jumbo jazzbox , i think his contract with ibanez must prohibit such public apparitions playing other guitar brands :-P

  • dude, yeah. now, i notice it. you might be completely right. thx for commenting.

  • Heaven must be like this!!

    This is so amazing,

    thanks mr george benson

  • That's "Lately"

    Awesome...

  • Mr. Benson is a super saiyan jin.... :)

And the pianist is Joe Sample ..

  • GRACIAS por el video de el gran maestro George Benson!!!!!

  • de nada cabllero :-)

  • lindo!!

  • Unbelievable thumb picking! Wes Montgomery style awesome

  • We don't often get to see how these professionals interact while recording.

  • which song is this?

  • Lately, Stevie Wonder

  • George Benson genius...jazz critic Daivis !!!

  • Really like the inside look at creating beautiful sounds in the studio. Thanks for posting!!!

  • the pleasure is mine sir.

  • dude, i looooooooooooooooove me some george, and he's deefinitely in the top 10 living

but, if you don't count sonny #1,

    you straigt up crazy

don't take it from me, but sonny is GOD

  • GB is godly amazing. what can i say........simply the best.

  • AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

how can he play like that with his thumb without that the medium and being so speed?

  • Since Freddie can't play anymore, probably the greatest living jazz musician. Wish he would play straight ahead more!

  • Freddie Hubbard?

  • wow! Absolutely stunning AND no pick! He's using his thumb Wes Montgomery style, simply incredible technique but not at the expense of the lovely melody!!! Most melodic and gifted jazz musician of his generation.

  • That song is called "Lately", actually by Stevie Wonder. But I love GB's version... so smooth

  • beautiful

    thanks!

  • simply incredible..

  • is that a costom L-5 with floating pick up and a jack in the back??

looks sexy,..... i can see what guitar he really wants to use or has to use.....

  • It was a Gibson Johnny Smith, he recorded Brezzin with that same model.

  • Hi thailow177 can I ask you where you got this footage from? Great stuff man!

  • oh man, i don't remember. i had it on a cd-rom and wanted to save it, so i uploaded it for safety. ironic, innit?

  • superb

  • simply amazing

  • Amazing depth of emotion in George's playing here.Better than what was on the Live in Ireland DVD. This is the definitive version right here. Thanks for posting this. It was gone from youtube for some time. Sample kills it here too.

  • It's on the Absolute Benson album (track # 7). It's also on the DVD Absolutely Live.

  • the song is called "Lately" and its by stevie wonder. i dont know if george recorded it, but its on stevie's "Hotter Than July" album. its a great song, and george does a beautiful arrangment of it!!

  • I wish he'd dig that Gibson Johnny Smith out more....

  • Beautiful!!
