To all of my fellow guitar players, is there a noticeable quality advantage to playing an older or newer GB-10? Should I continue looking for the older piece or go ahead and buy a new one?
@928Nupe Well as far as i know, the newer ones are made in Korea. The older ones are made in Japan. Unmatched craftsmanship for the money. The new ones are nice, but the older ones are in a league of their own. Ive played both, though I own neither =).
@SirFrancisBurton lol i was being sarcastic.. if you're a jazz guitarist and you don't know wes then there's something wrong.. that's like a basketball player saying they don't know who magic johnson is
this is disgusting. so EASY. everything he does sounds and looks so amazing and easy. complete and absolute mastery. i'm half gay for george benson... ha
Amen!Total(trained) ear. There's no thought process to it.He plays what He hears in his head over the changes. That's what jazz musicians do.They play off each other."If you think you stink".In the end it all comes down to your ear,not theory, not progressions(only to learn fingerboard) and especially not licks(tab for jazz guitar).I don't think so.Ear training only.Wish we all had beautiful souls like George.
@SirFrancisBurton I may have indulged in the moment, and I am nt the greatest fan of Jarrett. You're right though, it came through a bit too harsh consdering their abilities and talent. cheers, t
wes montgomery vs george benson or comments on his superb thiumb playing.
we watch this clip for the same reasons basically, lets reconsider if our opinion is what the world needed to hear/read. in the meantime, we could just enjoy and then move on to watching jack mc duff & david newman ripping it up funkwise!
no matter who you are....you just can not touch him....his phrasing set him apart ...on top where every body can look up to him and fix yourself musically...thanx
it does not matter.... benson is way much faster and better than wes.... he picked up from where wes has left off....and.....because of wes we have benson........respect for the jazz elderly...
Not meaning to offend you, but you have not heard enough Wes...it is not a matter of faster anyway...guitarists tend to get into speed traps for the sake of it, but it is in the breathing and frankly whatever you have to say. To hear Benson play Danny Boy is not to hear the melody at all, but just something his brain cells make him do...watch Wes play "Impressions"on You Tube and you will get a lesson in how to shift gears...listen to Wes play South of The Border and Unit 7. Wes chord solos too.
i respect your opinion, though i disagree. wes can play just as fast, but i believe he chooses not to because he is a more tasteful player. not speed oriented. like the david gilmour of jazz. it's not the speed, it's the feel. and wes created this style of playing and masterd this feel. people like metheny and benson took most of their moves from wes.
It's really amazing how someone can create something so beautiful that can touch both humans and animals alike...it's really something to think about. Thanks for posting.
otherwise what's the point. The truly great have more to show than others... we know that GB is truly great because he has SHOWN us.
Some musicians put out a very good "finished" product from the studio but when you see them LIVE you wonder, "what happened?" But, GB shows you even MORE of what he is on the stage...he's a great musician AND a great performer (a great SHOWman)
people bought this as entertainment but benson is an artist.. the difference between art and entertainment lays in how deep is the freedom of the "message". you only can enjoy what youve understand but theres much more inside.
so... calm pleasent is to listen to these tones, actually he will play in Yerevan, Armenia on November 12... I got ticket... so I long for this performance
No I don't think he's a show off. He's generous w/other players that share the stage w/him(Chet AtkinsEarl Klugh etc...)
I do think that he knows that he really doesn't have any peers. I think there are brilliant guitar players but none that have his level of mastery. He can play completely from his stream of consciousness and his solos always seem to have a destination. My personal feeling is that we're looking at THE greatest guitarist of all time right here.
i think, that at this level, you cannot compare. can say the same about f.e. joe pass or wes, and several others. when some players reach a certain level of proficiency, it's all about personal taste. so.. wouldn't go so far to call him THE greatest, but obviously one of the greatest in history. and he's you're right, he's got a nice personality =]
Hey guys i'm a fan of George Benson=) but I have a question. Is George Benson a show off? I heard somebody say this, I just wish that it's not true, cause it breaks my heart=(
best of Wes Montgomery Nat King Cole's singing Stevie Wonder and all the jazz guitar greats like Joe Pass Herb Ellis Barney Kessel Charlie Christian Django, etc such a great and tasteful player..
thx, for the comment, but i might correct you on this.
think: herb ellis (oscar peterson), barney kessel, CHARLIE CHRISTIAN, Wes Montgomery, Eddie Lang, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Freddie Green, Tiny Grimes. The list goes on and on.
Gut George is superb, true, and i am a deep admirer of his music.
there were many great jazz guitarist well before George Benson - Charlie Christian, Django Reindhart, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Grant Greene, Tal Farlow, Kenny Burrell,
I must say this is one of the best pieces of this music I have ever heard and it really brings tears to the eyes! George is simply the best musician ever!
Wes had a corn on his thumb, which gave his sound that point. He would get one sound for the soft parts, and then that point by using the corn. That's why no one will ever match Wes. And his thumb was double-jointed. He could bend it all the way back to touch his wrist, which he would do to shock people
I really like george benson's fell and style. I have seen him live a couple of times. I really like to try and learn how he fingers and slurs scales. It makes the guitar sound more like a sax.
Benson puts the clazz to jazz, he is always such an inspidation and such a champion of music of all styles. He has inspired me as much as Hendrix has!
Benson was born to play. After 31 years of playing (originally influenced mostly by benson and martino), I still can't get over how beautiful he plays. There is just something he has over every player that no matter what line he plays it sounds so sweet coming out of his hands. God bless you Benson,
