Actually, George Baker was a singer contracted to HMV - he never performed with the company. This recording is taken from the abridged version of 'The Sorcerer' made in 1933.
Actually I like Martyn Green's performance best. It's amusing that Henry Lytton hated the microphone so his understudy George Baker made recordings of roles he (baker, that is) seldom played on stage.
It's a public domain recording. It's properly credited in the "movie" it was taken from. (There's also a CXHB trailer uploaded.) George Baker sang this wonderfully.
LOVELY !

Poor Mr Bonejangles, thrown down the stairs by his own illogical and yet strangely affectionate paradoxical existence.

Wow! Gilbert and Sullivan's patter songs were the granddaddy of rap music!

@christomacin Not to mention an entire generation of great American songwriters, including Cole Porter and Ira Gershwin. We owe a lot to G&S

baker was not an understudy - he was drafted into many recordings as a "bigger name" to sell records

Cute. Too bad they didn't bother to credit the pirated D'Oyly Carte performance.
