I was more upset when Laura Branigan died at age 47. She at least was a nice kind person. Whitney was always a selfish bitch who was often mean to folks...including her fans. She was incredibly talented but it's what you do with fame, talent and money that counts.
I think Whitney's career is still truly viable. In fact, I'd say she has the world at her feet. It's just that this time round she should become a sports presenter and quit attempting to sing. Her singing voice is her history but I can really hear her ranting at the end of, say, the men's 100 metres at the Olympics. 'And we'll go live now to the stadium where our commentator Whitney Houston is ready to take us through the men's 100 metres'. Perfect. But enough of this croaking already!
"Response to criticism on Whitney's comeback tour".... Well, whoever uploaded this seemed to forget the rest of the song... where she sounded horrible. Yes, the intro sounded similar to vintage Whitney...but, um no. I love Whitney, and it makes me feel soo good that shes doing well now (in her personal life). However, her singing career is just about finished. She will (thank god) always have a career of some sort. I think she should go back into movies.
cant compare her latest album to mariah's one. this is her comeback album. if u compare whiteney's latest album to the real comeback album of mariah which is the emancipation of mimi, weedny loses relentlessly. EOMM was sold 5 million copies in us alone while 5 more in other places. i dun mean to degrade the great whitney's achievment, but as mariah's fans, i just dun someone else to compare them two as they are two individuals.
@michaelchanyc How is it that Mariah fans don't ever want to compare The Bodyguard to Glitter? Or the Bodyguard soundtrack to the Glitter soundtrack? But you want to compare Mimi to I Look To You, ok.... Mimi was a good album, Mariah's best of this decade and she struck while the fire was hot. Now she has made two inferior albums and the latest one bombed big time. Had Whitney released I Look To You or in 2005 sales would have been even better. As the economy and record industry were better then
@dastaylor She couldnt have come up with ILTY in 2005, since she was busy filming her Emmy Award winning reality tv series, Being Bobby Brown (one of the highest rated reality tv shows ever).
@dastaylor What about SHITneys critically acclaimed cameo in "Nora's Hair Salon". Or her Emmy-award winning tv performance in the hit "Being Bobby Brown". All great classics. And I also appreciated all the awards SHITney won for her incredible comeback this year, when her single, Million Dollar BONG smashed every music chart in the world. And her tour turned out what critics are calling, "some of her best live vocal performances of her career. "
@skye009 Seems you know a lot about Whitney..Nora's Hair Salon..Wow yeah the average person would know about that. Sorry Whitney's three hit movies and television movie stand up far better than Mariah's one bomb and her cameo appearances in films anyone hardly ever saw.
Million Dollar Bill was far better than Mariah's sad Obsessed in which her desperate attack on Eminem backfired on her again. Whitney's achievements speak for themselves. As do Mariah's. So not sure what your issue is....
@dastaylor *YAWN* I saw a preview of Noras Hair Salon on BET which showcased SHITney high as a hot air balloon. Mariah made ONE mainstream movie. Her three best were small independant dramas that garnered her critical acclaim. Something SHITney has never received.
Obsessed became platinum and made Mariah the single female artist with the most platinum singles. WEEDney's Million Dollar BONG FAILED on every music chart.
@skye009 Actually Million Dollar Bill was a #1 Dance hit on the Billboard charts and was a hit in the UK. I don't measure everything by the United States.
Whitney was in Nora's Hair Salon for about 30 seconds and she was quite normal....
The movies that Mariah were in gained critical acclaim, Mariah didn't get much acclaim except for Precious and that is only because they were shocked that she could play someone other than her "eternally 12 year old - sex kitten," self.
@dastaylor Are you KIDDING? Mariah drew GLOWING reviews for Wisegirls and even Tennesse. Her individual performance was given higher reviews than the actual movies.
@skye009 YOU MARIAH FANS ARE FUCKING PATHETIC. ACCEPRT IT WHITNEY IS A BETTER SINGER. THAT DOES NOT TAKE AWAY FROM MARIAHS TALENT. SHE IS THE CLOSEST THING TO WHITNEY!! THEY LIKE EACH OTHER, WHY FANS HATE EACH OTHER IS BEYOND ME. WE SHARE SOMETHING IN COMMON, WE BOTH LOVE OUR DIVAS. THERE ARE NO WHITNEYS OR MARIAHS IN "TODAYS" MUSIC. THEY ARE BOTH GREAT SINGERS.
@dastaylor Helen Mirren on Mariahs drunk acceptance speech: "I thought she was so sweet and lovely -- and blasted, yes, but why not? It was her night to celebrate"
SHITneys OWN FANS on SHITney and her critically acclaimed comeback concert: "She couldn't entertain a dead rat, to be honest"
@skye009 Why do you keep on? You just sound more sad with each passing post. Again Whitney's legacy speaks for itself. And there were thousands of fans that enjoyed her concerts. Yes she had vocal problems but again Mariah does as well her reviews for her tour were not that good either but they were not nearly as publicized. Mariah does a much better job of covering up her vocal issues by lipping most of her songs. I have seen Mariah live, I know. I love Mariah, but she isn't flawless either.
@dastaylor And what do you sound like? Just another DESPERATE CRACKney fan hoping her cracked up ass will set the dope aside.
And did you check the reviews for mariahs concert? Do your research. Critics PRAISED her performances and the overall sophisticated and mature experience.
PS. There is full proof on youtube that CRACKney has been caught lipsynching some of her songs during her concert....and even then shes still COUGHING and SWEATING like a mad cow during songs.
@skye009 I am not desperate, I know Whitney screwed up big time. I don't defend everything she does.
Yes I read Mariah's reviews. My home city, The Dallas Morning News wrote a scathing review of her recent tour. Not to mention many other sources.... The only reason Mariah doesn't sweat on stage is because she isn't really doing anything other than singing to a backing track or whispering and then she belts a note here or there.
Again, no one's perfect including Mariah. She is still great....
@dastaylor Of course there are gonna be negative reviews. Ive read almost every single review - and they were predominently positive. The only universal critique they had was the many costume changes. Thats it.
And again, Crackney has been caught singing to a backing track during her concerts...and she still sweat like a pig.
@skye009 Honestly talking to you is like talking to a 5-year old. All you can do is say Mariah is better than Whitney and call her names. I think Mariah, old-school Mariah was a great singer, today I think she is still pretty much ahead of the game. So I respect her I just don't think that she hung the moon and I still think Whitney is overall a better stage performer. I think Whitney happens to have done better crossing over into films. Not sure what Whitney did to you personally....
Let me tell y'all somethin...... weather she can still do it now or not is besides the point.
The point is ...SHE DID IT !!!! and nobody had been able to out sing Whitney at her best to this day ! no singer sounds the same in there 20's as they do in there mid 40's
AND ANOTHER THING.... Whitney Houston dosn't need anyones approval either....if she decides(key word) to release additional albums they will sell millions worldwide no matter what she sounds like.
"Walmike79" I think you're not seeing it, when she was going under God raised her up and now she is giving back her praise to Him, so she is not out to prove anything at all. Just showning; "after all that I've been through, who on earth can I turn to - I look to You!"
@estherholmgren You're mistaking I am seeing it very well. But..I am not religious so I don't see it from that aspect. I see a talented performer that I love and have since 1985. I am not one of the haters. I love Whitney so you don't need to tell me how to look at her..We are on the same page. Just not with God. ;) And besides, I mentioned that she has done so much and what does she have to prove, so your reply is kinda confusing because I already stated that point..lol. But smiles anyway ;)
Whitney Houston is done. the fat cow cant sing anymore!! this is just horrible!! dont quit your day job at mcdonald whitney, you will need it more than ever!
@jackobyuk She is the millionaire who will be remembered for years to come for all that she accomplished, she has won every award, she is an icon and a legend. Who are you but a sad troll on You Tube?
crap talk!! she is a washed up drugie that have not accomplished shait, except for one song that is played to death on the radio. the awards they give to everyone, its nothing special.
@jackobyuk Yeah seven consecutive number one hits that broke records by Elvis and the Beatles. The first female artist to ever debut at #1 on the charts. Multi Platinum albums. 170 Million Albums sold worldwide...... Her latest album debuted at #1 and has sold 3 million worldwide alone. So much for being washed up, her contemporaries can't even sell that much. Mariah, Christina....etc. Did Mariah's last album even go gold?
@dastaylor cant compare her latest album to mariah's one. this is her comeback album. if u compare whiteney's latest album to the real comeback album of mariah which is the emancipation of mimi, weedny loses relentlessly. EOMM was sold 5 million copies in us alone while 5 more in other places. i dun mean to degrade the great whitney's achievment, but as mariah's fans, i just dun someone else to compare them two as they are two individuals.
@dastaylor Mariahs last album went gold several months ago, and given the current state of the DefJam record label, thats pretty high. BUT, Obsessed went platinum within just a few months of its release.
@skye009 I wouldn't be proud of Obsessed if I were you, it was a terrible song and a complete embarrassment for Mariah. Whitney's album did far better overall despite not having a hit single. Million Dollar Bill charted and was #1 on the dance charts. And it was far superior than Mariah's auto-tuned, whisper BS.
@dastaylor Obssessed is still better than anything SHITney recorded in the past decade. Eminem made yet ANOTHER track with mariahs name, and she responded. I think shes the only woman to do so. CRACKney would NEVER have the courage to do something like that.
@Chimier Read the comment again. I was referring to her singles. To my knowlege, Million Dollars or Million Dollar Baby (whatever its called) debuted and peaked from the at 100.
Obsessed quickly went platinum making Mariah the female artist with the most platinum singles.
@skye009 So in other words, you've been saying things when it's convenient. You praised Mariah for going gold with MOAIA as well, did you not? Yet you suddenly skipped over Whitney's album success because ILTY sold more.
@Chimier Yes it did sell more. Good for her. But I stand by what I said about it being an AWFUL album.
Id rather listen to a personal album released by Mariah that sold next to nothing than listen to a 2009 Whitney Houston track.
The promotion for that album was beyond brilliant. Clive Davis built the hype for that "comeback" album since 2004. And her camp easily labelled 2009 as her comeback year (promo for GMA, AMA, etc.).
@skye009 Of course you'd say it's awful. It's Whitney, someone Mariah's constantly been compared to, so anything she's done is gonna be awful to you. Not that I really care. It's one of her best albums and certainly her most personal.
@Chimier Did I say that everything she has done is awful? Nope.
I think both MOAIA and ILTY are generally terrible efforts. I just think more of the songs on MOAIA couldve done well had LA. Reid not been so incompetent lately (look at Janet, Rihanna)
As for ILTY being one of her "most personal" albums - I beg to differ. The entire thing screams of desperation. She woke up one day feeling like making a comeback, and ran to Clive Davis, after singing about "trying it on her own" years ago.
@Chimier Oh PLEASE! She followed the common crackhead comeback formula. Singing about how she regrets the years of substance abuse. *rolls eyes*. She demanded full sympathy on that album and sounded desperate for money.
@Chimier So youre telling me that shes singing about "not knowing her own strength" and shes NOT referring to her days of smoking crack?
I've said it before and I'll say it again: her songs were vehicles to showcase her vocal power. She could have sung about pigs shitting in the air and people (including me) wouldve bought it. Now that she lost what her entire career is built around, shes trying to add more meaning into her songs and her "comeback" album is an easy serving platter.
@skye009 I never denied she was singing about it, what I said was that you should prove she was singing about REGRETTING those days, which is what you stated.
No one would have bought a song about pig shit in the air. And her voice is not lost, it's still very present. It's just damaged and it's gonna take time for it to heal.
@skye009 Whitney's songs were not only to showcase her vocal skill, but her intepretive skill. She, even now, can take a bad song and make it good, a good song and make it great, and a great song and make it timeless. That has always been her biggest gift.
@Chimier Great, more power to her. But I dont agree with that she can take a bad song and make it good by her recent standards, especially when she doesnt do her own songs justice. But youre right. Her biggest (and her only I can argue) gift is her voice. That is her legacy. Her records have in no way redefined the music industry because of the MUSICALITY. Only because of (what used to be) her voice.
@skye009 Vocal-wise, she may not do her old songs justice in comparison to how she used to do them, but she's still the finest interpreter of the pop age.
Whitney's biggest hit IWALY was all about her musicality. The way she built the song along the chord progressions, the way she established and resolved musical ideas, her phrasing, her feeling etc.
Her voice was the instrument she used to express her musicality, still is. Even with her diminished voice, she's a fine vocal musician.
@Chimier By musicality i was referring to establishing musical trends. When younger artists, music professionals cite Whitney Houston, they accredit her voice. Not for recording what is described to be the magna carta of melisma (VOL), being a pioneer of the pop/hip hop collaboration, being one of the first singers to re record vocals for remixes, incorporating elements of house and urban music into remixes, or being one of the leaders of the pop/r&b fusion. ALL of which someone else has done.
@skye009 #1- Melisma has been used for hundreds of years and before Whitney or Mariah did it, Aretha blew it away. It's because of her that melisma is used in popular music.
#2- Whitney has been credited many times for bringing melisma into the forefront of music along with Mariah.
#3- Musicality is the technical and interpretive skills involved in a piece of music, not establishing musical trends.
Yes, Mariah did all those things, but this is about Whitney, not Mimi.
@Chimier Hmm...I thought that was how this entire discussion began.
1, 2 - Yes, I am fully aware of that. I in no way said (or will ever say) that Mariah created vocal runs. But frankly, Mariah brought it to mainstream radio. And that song has been cited by virtually every female singer since its introduction, and I can find you countless articles to back up this claim.
3 - I had no better word for it that could fit under 400 characters.
@skye009 No, Mariah didn't bring it up in mainstream radio. That was Aretha, and Aretha alone. Whitney and Mariah just emphasized on gospel-styled singing that was just already there, Aretha blew it away. She didn't start it, but every riff, belt, run, squall etc. you hear on the radio is because of Aretha, not Mariah, not Whitney, Aretha.
@skye009 They also accredit Whitney's intepretive skills, they accredit her for recording the most influential female album of the pop age (her debut), they accredit her for being the architect of modern singing for the past 25 years, paving the way for Mariah, Celine, Christina, Beyonce, and every pop diva who came after her. They accredit her for being the musical blueprint in terms of ballads (IWALY, GLOA) and vocal style (she combined the styles of Streisand and Franklin).
@Chimier *sighs* here we go again. Whitney had absolutely no hand in Mariahs career and im tired of hearing otherwise. HOW is her debut album the most influential female album of the pop age? Her debut accomodated polished pop songs, as I said before, that boasted her extraordinary vocal talent (past tense). While Mariah did express her vocal abilities as well, she also focused on lyric. Her career is based on the streets of New York, NOT Whitney Houston's debut album.
@skye009 Whitney absolutely did. Not only has Mariah mentioned her as a major influence FOUR TIMES, music historians and critics have cited Whitney's debut as the most influential female album of the pop age. It's been called the "blueprint for decades of divas".
I'm not talking about Mariah's songwriting, I'm talking about her musical and vocal style.
@Chimier That occured 1998, AFTER they recorded their duet and they were exchanging compliments. If she was asked around 1990-1996, Mariah wouldnt care at all to acknowledge Whitney in any way, but would cite Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, etc. as her main inspiration.
@Chimier Nor do I believe that her musical style is reflected upon Mariah. NO WAY. Read my previous comment, Whitneys recordings (1986-1989) were polished, optimistic pop songs with literal lyrics. Mariah's debut (1990-1991) was heavily influenced by the hip hop craze that was going on in the streets of New York in the early 90's. Musically, other than similar glossy tones (thats because of biology), the two couldnt be any more different.
@skye009 Mariah's became more hip-hop influenced during 1993, with Dreamlover, which used a loop from Blind Alley, one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop. Her debut was very polished pop music (which was another reason why she was accused of copying Whitney). Mariah herself said it was too polished. Whitney and Mariah stopped doing similar things around 1995. That's when Mariah's musical sound started to really soak in hip-hop, but the years prior, very similar to Whitney.
@Chimier Whitney released two albums (that sound exactly the same) before Mariah was introduced and I dont hear any resemblance musically or vocally. "Prisoner" is the first hint of Mariahs fascinatiin with hip hop, as evident in the rap verse towards the end of the song. "Someday" is a new jack swing song. Hip Hop + Jack Swing = New York 1990
The songs may have been brushed to appear shiney with 0 vocal flaws, but musically, she took note from early 90's hip hop.
@skye009 Well you didn't, but everyone else did, hence why Mariah was compared to Whitney so much. Vocally, Mariah was singing in a gospel-oriented style but with the pop balladry power of a Streisand, same as Whitney. Musically, both did the big lush ballads that showcased those vocals.
@skye009 Those are two songs you've mentioned out of 11. That's like me saying Whitney wasn't influenced by Aretha musically and citing Someone for Me as an example. It doesn't prove anything if the minority of an album experiments with few hip-hop elements, especially since both albums were released at different times, thus Mariah had more musical mileage to choose from. Doesn't refute the fact that if it was musically similar to Whitney's debut for the most part.
@Chimier Those two songs were examples. Whitneys debut was light and optimistic. While songs like Vision of Love, Vanishing, I Dont Wanna Cry were dark. And the vocals on You Need Me, Prisoner, Sent from Up Above were aggressive. Sooo typical 90's. If people say that Madonna's music defined the 80's, then Mariah is the Madonna of the 90's.
@skye009 That has nothing to do with the musical style of the song. You're talking about lyrics, I'm talking about music.
Vision of Love is not a dark song at all. It has a great, optimistic message.
Whitney was VERY vocally aggressive: Didn't We Almost Have It All, So Emotional, Love is a Contact Sport, Love Will Save the Day, You're Still MY Man.
@skye009 There is no musical genre called "dark" or "light", so it doesn't matter. It was still polished pop music like Whitney's was.
The feeling of the album may have been "dark", but that has more to do with the lyrics. It was still of the same genre and vocal style of Whitney's debut for the most part.
Example- Listen by Beyonce is more "dark" than IWALY or Hero, but still musically similar and without them, Listen probably wouldn't exist.
@Chimier I dont indicate "darkness" or "lightness" to be a genre. Im referring to the feeling. And the feeling could be different depending on each individual which is why we have been arguing this for over three hours. But if I could convert it in musical terms - those 'dark songs' Ive mentioned are sung in Mariah's mid-lower register. And her lower register, I tfind to be a bit spookey, hence the dark remark. (the sci-fi influenced opening on VOL).
@skye009 Whitney's debut and her second album sound NOTHING alike. Yes, they both used a similar musical format, but her sophomore album drew more on soul influences, as shown by Just the Lonely Talking Again and For the Love of You. It also had way more uptempos, like So Emotional, a rock heavy rhythmic driven pop song, Love is a Contact Sport, Love Will Save the Day. Only IWDWS was similar to HWIK, but it had a more rhythmic feel to it.
@Chimier Are you kidding? Its almost a track for track exchange! And I believe that was a predominent critique common in the reviews for her second album.
How Will I Know=I Wanna Dance With Somebody
You Give Good Love=So Emotional
All At Once=Didn't we Almost Have it All & Where Do Broken Hearts Go.
...and thats all that i can come up with from the top of my head.
@skye009 You Give Good Love sounds NOTHING like So Emotional. So Emotional is an uptempo, with clear elements in rock music involved, such as the electric guitar and driving rhythmic line.
That's like me saying that I Belong to You is musically similar to Queen of the Night. IWDWS is more rhythmic than HWIK, All at Once isn't as balladry as DWAHIA and WDBHG.
The predominant critique was that the album used a similar format to her debut, as I said, but it sounded nothing alike.
@Chimier GLOA is nothing I havent heard from Dionne Warwick before. In fact, it bares a striking resemblance to I'll Never love this Way Again. What I will admit, her debut did spawn a "diva factor". But even before that, the consummate diva was Diana Ross. And there were countless "divas" just awakening from a disco era hangover (Cher, Donna Summer, etc.)
@skye009 None of those ladies could sing like Whitney. None of them had a debut that started a trend in music like Whitney's did. Even Nancy Wilson credited Whitney for bringing back great singing into music. Not just Nancy Wilson, but music historians.
@Chimier And that is true. At a time when the disco craze was over, but dance music was still popular, you didnt need a good voice (hence the fascination with someone was talentless as Madonna). I will always acknowledge Whitney for reviving the power vocalist movement of the mid-80's to late 90's, but it ends there for me.
@skye009 Well, it doesn't end there for music historians or the singers who came after her. Whitney's legacy is HUGE. She's the most influential female singer of the past 25 years. No other person combined Streisand's sound with Aretha's style of singing so perfectly. No one made such an impact upon their debut. While Whitney's career last decade was practically dead, her influence was not and is not.
@Chimier Good for her and her fans. but you just proved what I initially stated. her legacy is based on her voice. I can argue until the rapture that Mariah is the bigger trendsetter.
@skye009 And she is the bigger trendsetter, but Whitney is more influential.
Whitney's legacy is based on her SINGING, not necessarily her voice, and I never denied her singing took prominence in her legacy, but it is no secret that she was quite the trendsetter from her debut.
@Chimier Dont think so. Mariah has covered more ground in music from 1993-1997, while Whitney was focusing on her movie career.
And in terms of diversity in their music catalogue, Mariah wins by a country mile. Which is why people from Carrie Underwood to Rihanna to Nelly Furtado to Nicki Minaj have cited Mariah as an influence (not all younger artists are influenced by both as many would think).
@skye009 Yes, Mariah has covered more ground, but again, it doesn't refute the fact that up until 1995, she was very musically similar to Whitney, one of the main reasons she was compared to her. Mariah even acknowledged this in a Vibe 1998 issue when she said , "I don't think we even do similar things at this point", which was very true.
Rihanna has also cited Whitney as an influence, Fantasia, Monica, J-Hud, as have young up and coming artists like Matisse and Melonie Fiona.
@Chimier I happen to think her interpretation skills have deteriorated more than her technical abilities.
Example:
The arrangement I Wanna Dance With Somebody on Dancing with the stars was clearly thinned out so her voice wouldnt be completely drowned. And her phrasing was terrible on all levels. She bunches lyrics together, taking away from the original melody. The transcendent energy she established in the original recording was unheard of in that performance.
@skye009 That has nothing to do with phrasing. "Bunching lyrics together" speaks more to diction than phrasing. Phrasing refers to the melodic and rhythmic aspects of singing (i.e manipulating syllables and pitches together). Whitney's phrasing is excellent. She can sing a shade behind the beat or on the beat, she can craft new melodies by building from old ones.
She's a MUCH better interpreter now than she was before (ex. Stormy Weather 1993 vs 2010). Much better.
@xjv8 yes that,s right i don,t know hou this is possible to stil say that you can sing like this , they schould listen to dame shirley bassey that is a singer the americans can learn from
Earlier you call this a diva! She could sing like nina simone or whatever everybody who front her try it better! Thanks for your voice ONE MOMENT IN TIME;I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU ; I HAVE NOTHING and all the other good tracks you was singing for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
At her prime, there was and will not be a voice like hers, so cute and powerful at the same time. So right now if she wants to keep singing on stage I think it's between her and her audience. If ppl are willing to go see her why not she should keep singing.
you guys should be considerate, well obviously she's not that young anymore, everything can change.. voice, looks etc..atleast whitney proved her self already when she was still popular and young. she tried her best and that's what matters..good job whitney! I'm always gonna be you're fan..
...Please Diva, stop while is time, you have already earned millions of dollars, should do things better for you like travells or going on taking care of yourself and so on...be grateful de 2o.chance God gave to you to keep you save, very beautiful and healthy. Please, dont disapoint more your fans.
I love Whitney, think is great she came from all troubles in her life, but saying Honestly? Is better stop now than go ahead with such "show" that lost the real meaning of it, long time ago.
People who think she is still good, of course, are people who has nothing else to do unless try to earn money with her...
She sounds pretty good here and i yt her other songs that night and her performances weresolid. Her tribute to Michael Jackson, A song for you was epic, I loved it!
@Realist4lifey I am with you true fans will still appreciate her. Sometime her voice is not perfect but the emotion and stage presence that she has would be worth my hard earned money ANY DAY. I REALLY HOPE THAT SHE TOURS THE US BECAUSE I AM ALREADY SAVING UP BECAUSE I NEED FRONT ROW TICKETS LOL.
@THEWHATSPOPPINSHOW I do not think she is coming...I kinda hope she doesn't I really like her and the press here will destroy her. She may do it for the money though
@Realist4lifey Well, she hasn't been on tour for years so you don't know what to expect. When people have paid hard earned cash for a performance.. and I am talking £90 for a single ticket, you expect value for money. This is a forum after all about Whitney's performance so the place to discuss. And they did complain at the time to the box office. I think the curtain is calling for her in all honesty.
And you're too blinkered and biased to think other wise. She has lost many fans through this
To be sane about it, no, she doesn't sound like the Whitney that we all hear on a older studio recording. I think it's important to realise that she is not 25 years old anymore and her sound has simply evolved. She now has a much more textured voice than that note perfect sound. The cracks and imperfections sounded interesting and edgy. We loved it.
Went and saw her last night (28/Apr/2010) and in all honesty, we were expecting a bit of a carcrash from Whitney. I'm not really a diehard fan; I love a couple of her older ballads but hadn't really listened to her new album. The tickets were a birthday gift. I was worried about it being awful as I had listened to all the 'reports' that have been made very public.
I could not believe what I was looking at on stage. The woman is nothing short of amazing. Whitney rocked!
Every singer reaches a certain when they cannot sing the way they did when they were young. Whitney's vocal woes are no doubt exacerbated by her troubles with drugs. She should lower the keys and learn how to adjust to her new lower register.
she is much better here than 26th...she is overdoing it.....and wrecking her reputation.....she should be doing 3 or 4 songs with a warmed up voice on tv....not wrecking what she has touring and singing the old stuff that is too hard....she is being exploited and more so are her fans
People are cheering when she hits any note not as they used to when she hit the high notes. Come one Whitney, time to give up singing live and start miming, the fans will thank you for it, if they wanted to pay to listen to singing like this they would buy their nan a drink down the pub and watch her on kareoke night and she sounds better. Tom Jones and Lulu can still sing because they don't smoke.
@SecretSylph I can't believe people are suggesting that she mimes. I'd have so much more respect if she released a statement announcing that she's cancelling her tour because she has learned that she's not ready and the constant days of travelling and touring have only been worse for her voice. I don't think lip syncing would be good. It's not like britney spears or lady gaga where they have dancing to fall back on - all she does is sing.
whatever negative feed back people will say about her she is still whitney houston. she manage to correct her mistakes and now shes standing up again so lets not put her down
I was there on monday night near the front. I think she mimed to the first song.
Her voice wasnt that bad though. She just cant sing above the mid-range anymore so she struggles with the big power ballads. But, she put on a great show and held it together.
I went to see her at The O2 last night and loved it! I had a great time, singing and dacning!!!! She wasn't terrible like some people say but she wasn't the amazing Whitney that everyone has grown to love, shes still a good singer and she still put on a great show. The crowd were behind her 100% everyone was cheering, clapping and singing and dancing along. I loved it and I'd definately go again!!
She should stick to her new reportoire (this song is beautiful) and not sing the old songs. They don't fit her voice anymore. Get a new management and launch the new older Whitney.
Whitney I will always love you!!!! Thank you so much for all the joy you've been giving us.
everybody change and get older, Bob dylan is also not the same as for 20 years, thats normal. are ya the same as for 20 years? she wrote wold songs, so ....
Whitney, continue on your journey to recovery and watch the Universe open up for you. God Bless you!
(ps. this is the best version that I have heard of this song. Its proof that although her voice is fragile and inconsistent, It is still there. With plenty of rest, care and training it can get better. And I am praying for that! )
Whitney Houston...next stop...the County Fair. Knowing what we all know about this crackhead, I don't fell sorry for any one of you paying money for this bitch. What the hell did you expect? This stupid bitch ruined her voice with years of self abuse. Don't waste your hard earned money on any of her so-called concerts.
Saw Whitney at the O2 London last night and she was awful! 1000's of fans left early & were disgusted. Whitney 'was' a legend but if you can't sing anymore don't charge massive prices for concert tickets!!
whitney is still whitney, no one can replace her name in the music industry. she has inspired a lot of newbies and her songs will still remain hers. If u notice in most singing competition, its whitney's song they are singing. because they know that whitney's music is different from others. its unique, powerful and meaningful. No one is perfect in this world so whatever happens to her life its her choice, atleast she has contributed a lot in music industry. We still love whitney!
@kellyplanet Would you go spread your hate somewhere else you sick little cow. This was LIVE and anyone with HALF a brain would know that. Just shut your fat face and Stop hating on this legend. She sang this song from the heart and you just can't take it that she sang it so well. You would've preferred it if she had sang it badly because then you would have something to complain about but when she sings it note perfect you LIE and say she mimes. WELL your a dirty slimy lying hater. Leave Whit
Seen her in Dublin last night and she didnt sing that song like that, she gave a terrible version of it, the crowd actually sang most songs for her!! Thats a good version of it but very disappointing last night, still love her tho!!

EOMM was sold 5 million copies in us alone while 5 more in other places. i dun mean to degrade the great whitney's achievment, but as mariah's fans, i just dun someone else to compare them two as they are two individuals.
michaelchanyc 1 year ago
@michaelchanyc How is it that Mariah fans don't ever want to compare The Bodyguard to Glitter? Or the Bodyguard soundtrack to the Glitter soundtrack? But you want to compare Mimi to I Look To You, ok.... Mimi was a good album, Mariah's best of this decade and she struck while the fire was hot. Now she has made two inferior albums and the latest one bombed big time. Had Whitney released I Look To You or in 2005 sales would have been even better. As the economy and record industry were better then
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor
E=MC2 was released 2 years ago (lowest time in this economic downfall) and it still sold 3 milllion.
But if you want to compare the Bodyguard to Glitter, where shall I start?

@skye009 E=MC2 sold 2.5 million, not 3 million.

@Chimier Sold over 2.5 million actually so I generalized.

@skye009 Oh yes like Mariah's Oscar winning performance in Glitter or her drunk, I mean gracious acceptance speech for her bit part in Precious.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor What about SHITneys critically acclaimed cameo in "Nora's Hair Salon". Or her Emmy-award winning tv performance in the hit "Being Bobby Brown". All great classics. And I also appreciated all the awards SHITney won for her incredible comeback this year, when her single, Million Dollar BONG smashed every music chart in the world. And her tour turned out what critics are calling, "some of her best live vocal performances of her career. "
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Seems you know a lot about Whitney..Nora's Hair Salon..Wow yeah the average person would know about that. Sorry Whitney's three hit movies and television movie stand up far better than Mariah's one bomb and her cameo appearances in films anyone hardly ever saw.
Million Dollar Bill was far better than Mariah's sad Obsessed in which her desperate attack on Eminem backfired on her again. Whitney's achievements speak for themselves. As do Mariah's. So not sure what your issue is....
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor *YAWN* I saw a preview of Noras Hair Salon on BET which showcased SHITney high as a hot air balloon. Mariah made ONE mainstream movie. Her three best were small independant dramas that garnered her critical acclaim. Something SHITney has never received.
Obsessed became platinum and made Mariah the single female artist with the most platinum singles. WEEDney's Million Dollar BONG FAILED on every music chart.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Actually Million Dollar Bill was a #1 Dance hit on the Billboard charts and was a hit in the UK. I don't measure everything by the United States.
Whitney was in Nora's Hair Salon for about 30 seconds and she was quite normal....
The movies that Mariah were in gained critical acclaim, Mariah didn't get much acclaim except for Precious and that is only because they were shocked that she could play someone other than her "eternally 12 year old - sex kitten," self.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor Are you KIDDING? Mariah drew GLOWING reviews for Wisegirls and even Tennesse. Her individual performance was given higher reviews than the actual movies.

@skye009 YOU MARIAH FANS ARE FUCKING PATHETIC. ACCEPRT IT WHITNEY IS A BETTER SINGER. THAT DOES NOT TAKE AWAY FROM MARIAHS TALENT. SHE IS THE CLOSEST THING TO WHITNEY!! SHITneys OWN FANS on SHITney and her critically acclaimed comeback concert: "She couldn't entertain a dead rat, to be honest"
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Why do you keep on? You just sound more sad with each passing post. Again Whitney's legacy speaks for itself. And there were thousands of fans that enjoyed her concerts. Yes she had vocal problems but again Mariah does as well her reviews for her tour were not that good either but they were not nearly as publicized. Mariah does a much better job of covering up her vocal issues by lipping most of her songs. I have seen Mariah live, I know. I love Mariah, but she isn't flawless either.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor And what do you sound like? Just another DESPERATE CRACKney fan hoping her cracked up ass will set the dope aside.
And did you check the reviews for mariahs concert? Do your research. Critics PRAISED her performances and the overall sophisticated and mature experience.
PS. There is full proof on youtube that CRACKney has been caught lipsynching some of her songs during her concert....and even then shes still COUGHING and SWEATING like a mad cow during songs.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 I am not desperate, I know Whitney screwed up big time. I don't defend everything she does.
Yes I read Mariah's reviews. My home city, The Dallas Morning News wrote a scathing review of her recent tour. Not to mention many other sources.... The only reason Mariah doesn't sweat on stage is because she isn't really doing anything other than singing to a backing track or whispering and then she belts a note here or there.
Again, no one's perfect including Mariah. She is still great....
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor Of course there are gonna be negative reviews. Ive read almost every single review - and they were predominently positive. The only universal critique they had was the many costume changes. Thats it.
And again, Crackney has been caught singing to a backing track during her concerts...and she still sweat like a pig.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Honestly talking to you is like talking to a 5-year old. All you can do is say Mariah is better than Whitney and call her names. I think Mariah, old-school Mariah was a great singer, today I think she is still pretty much ahead of the game. So I respect her I just don't think that she hung the moon and I still think Whitney is overall a better stage performer. I think Whitney happens to have done better crossing over into films. Not sure what Whitney did to you personally....

@dastaylor Mariahs last album went gold several months ago, and given the current state of the DefJam record label, thats pretty high. BUT, Obsessed went platinum within just a few months of its release.
ALL the songs on CRACKneys latest album flopped.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 I wouldn't be proud of Obsessed if I were you, it was a terrible song and a complete embarrassment for Mariah. Whitney's album did far better overall despite not having a hit single. Million Dollar Bill charted and was #1 on the dance charts. And it was far superior than Mariah's auto-tuned, whisper BS.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor Obssessed is still better than anything SHITney recorded in the past decade. Eminem made yet ANOTHER track with mariahs name, and she responded. I think shes the only woman to do so. CRACKney would NEVER have the courage to do something like that.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 LOL if Whitney's album is a flop, then Mariah's is an even bigger flop. Whitney's sold more in the US AND worldwide.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Read the comment again. I was referring to her singles. To my knowlege, Million Dollars or Million Dollar Baby (whatever its called) debuted and peaked from the at 100.
Obsessed quickly went platinum making Mariah the female artist with the most platinum singles.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 So in other words, you've been saying things when it's convenient. You praised Mariah for going gold with MOAIA as well, did you not? Yet you suddenly skipped over Whitney's album success because ILTY sold more.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Yes it did sell more. Good for her. But I stand by what I said about it being an AWFUL album.
Id rather listen to a personal album released by Mariah that sold next to nothing than listen to a 2009 Whitney Houston track.
The promotion for that album was beyond brilliant. Clive Davis built the hype for that "comeback" album since 2004. And her camp easily labelled 2009 as her comeback year (promo for GMA, AMA, etc.).
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Of course you'd say it's awful. It's Whitney, someone Mariah's constantly been compared to, so anything she's done is gonna be awful to you. Not that I really care. It's one of her best albums and certainly her most personal.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Did I say that everything she has done is awful? Nope.
I think both MOAIA and ILTY are generally terrible efforts. I just think more of the songs on MOAIA couldve done well had LA. Reid not been so incompetent lately (look at Janet, Rihanna)
As for ILTY being one of her "most personal" albums - I beg to differ. The entire thing screams of desperation. She woke up one day feeling like making a comeback, and ran to Clive Davis, after singing about "trying it on her own" years ago.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 You can beg to differ all you want. I Didn't Know My Own Strength, Salute, I Look to You, Nothing but Love, all about her life.
And CLIVE asked her to come back. She didn't run to him for anything.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Oh PLEASE! She followed the common crackhead comeback formula. Singing about how she regrets the years of substance abuse. *rolls eyes*. She demanded full sympathy on that album and sounded desperate for money.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Really? None of those songs mentioned any regret, unless you can point out a lyric that proves otherwise.
You must have special powers to figure out that she "demanded sympathy" and "sounded desperate for money".
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier So youre telling me that shes singing about "not knowing her own strength" and shes NOT referring to her days of smoking crack?
I've said it before and I'll say it again: her songs were vehicles to showcase her vocal power. She could have sung about pigs shitting in the air and people (including me) wouldve bought it. Now that she lost what her entire career is built around, shes trying to add more meaning into her songs and her "comeback" album is an easy serving platter.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 I never denied she was singing about it, what I said was that you should prove she was singing about REGRETTING those days, which is what you stated.
No one would have bought a song about pig shit in the air. And her voice is not lost, it's still very present. It's just damaged and it's gonna take time for it to heal.
Chimier 1 year ago
@skye009 Whitney's songs were not only to showcase her vocal skill, but her intepretive skill. She, even now, can take a bad song and make it good, a good song and make it great, and a great song and make it timeless. That has always been her biggest gift.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Great, more power to her. But I dont agree with that she can take a bad song and make it good by her recent standards, especially when she doesnt do her own songs justice. But youre right. Her biggest (and her only I can argue) gift is her voice. That is her legacy. Her records have in no way redefined the music industry because of the MUSICALITY. Only because of (what used to be) her voice.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Vocal-wise, she may not do her old songs justice in comparison to how she used to do them, but she's still the finest interpreter of the pop age.
Whitney's biggest hit IWALY was all about her musicality. The way she built the song along the chord progressions, the way she established and resolved musical ideas, her phrasing, her feeling etc.
Her voice was the instrument she used to express her musicality, still is. Even with her diminished voice, she's a fine vocal musician.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier By musicality i was referring to establishing musical trends. When younger artists, music professionals cite Whitney Houston, they accredit her voice. Not for recording what is described to be the magna carta of melisma (VOL), being a pioneer of the pop/hip hop collaboration, being one of the first singers to re record vocals for remixes, incorporating elements of house and urban music into remixes, or being one of the leaders of the pop/r&b fusion. ALL of which someone else has done.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 #1- Melisma has been used for hundreds of years and before Whitney or Mariah did it, Aretha blew it away. It's because of her that melisma is used in popular music.
#2- Whitney has been credited many times for bringing melisma into the forefront of music along with Mariah.
#3- Musicality is the technical and interpretive skills involved in a piece of music, not establishing musical trends.
Yes, Mariah did all those things, but this is about Whitney, not Mimi.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Hmm...I thought that was how this entire discussion began.
1, 2 - Yes, I am fully aware of that. I in no way said (or will ever say) that Mariah created vocal runs. But frankly, Mariah brought it to mainstream radio. And that song has been cited by virtually every female singer since its introduction, and I can find you countless articles to back up this claim.
3 - I had no better word for it that could fit under 400 characters.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 No, Mariah didn't bring it up in mainstream radio. That was Aretha, and Aretha alone. Whitney and Mariah just emphasized on gospel-styled singing that was just already there, Aretha blew it away. She didn't start it, but every riff, belt, run, squall etc. you hear on the radio is because of Aretha, not Mariah, not Whitney, Aretha.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier And did I disagree?
Like I said, I am fully aware that Aretha is the godmother of any vocal styling used since the rock era.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 They also accredit Whitney's intepretive skills, they accredit her for recording the most influential female album of the pop age (her debut), they accredit her for being the architect of modern singing for the past 25 years, paving the way for Mariah, Celine, Christina, Beyonce, and every pop diva who came after her. They accredit her for being the musical blueprint in terms of ballads (IWALY, GLOA) and vocal style (she combined the styles of Streisand and Franklin).
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier *sighs* here we go again. Whitney had absolutely no hand in Mariahs career and im tired of hearing otherwise. HOW is her debut album the most influential female album of the pop age? Her debut accomodated polished pop songs, as I said before, that boasted her extraordinary vocal talent (past tense). While Mariah did express her vocal abilities as well, she also focused on lyric. Her career is based on the streets of New York, NOT Whitney Houston's debut album.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Whitney absolutely did. Not only has Mariah mentioned her as a major influence FOUR TIMES, music historians and critics have cited Whitney's debut as the most influential female album of the pop age. It's been called the "blueprint for decades of divas".
I'm not talking about Mariah's songwriting, I'm talking about her musical and vocal style.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier That occured 1998, AFTER they recorded their duet and they were exchanging compliments. If she was asked around 1990-1996, Mariah wouldnt care at all to acknowledge Whitney in any way, but would cite Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, etc. as her main inspiration.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 It doesn't matter WHEN it occured, all that matter is that it DID! If Mariah said Whitney influenced her, it's not debatable....at all.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Nor do I believe that her musical style is reflected upon Mariah. NO WAY. Read my previous comment, Whitneys recordings (1986-1989) were polished, optimistic pop songs with literal lyrics. Mariah's debut (1990-1991) was heavily influenced by the hip hop craze that was going on in the streets of New York in the early 90's. Musically, other than similar glossy tones (thats because of biology), the two couldnt be any more different.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Mariah's became more hip-hop influenced during 1993, with Dreamlover, which used a loop from Blind Alley, one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop. Her debut was very polished pop music (which was another reason why she was accused of copying Whitney). Mariah herself said it was too polished. Whitney and Mariah stopped doing similar things around 1995. That's when Mariah's musical sound started to really soak in hip-hop, but the years prior, very similar to Whitney.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Whitney released two albums (that sound exactly the same) before Mariah was introduced and I dont hear any resemblance musically or vocally. "Prisoner" is the first hint of Mariahs fascinatiin with hip hop, as evident in the rap verse towards the end of the song. "Someday" is a new jack swing song. Hip Hop + Jack Swing = New York 1990
The songs may have been brushed to appear shiney with 0 vocal flaws, but musically, she took note from early 90's hip hop.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Well you didn't, but everyone else did, hence why Mariah was compared to Whitney so much. Vocally, Mariah was singing in a gospel-oriented style but with the pop balladry power of a Streisand, same as Whitney. Musically, both did the big lush ballads that showcased those vocals.
Chimier 1 year ago
@skye009 Those are two songs you've mentioned out of 11. That's like me saying Whitney wasn't influenced by Aretha musically and citing Someone for Me as an example. It doesn't prove anything if the minority of an album experiments with few hip-hop elements, especially since both albums were released at different times, thus Mariah had more musical mileage to choose from. Doesn't refute the fact that if it was musically similar to Whitney's debut for the most part.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Those two songs were examples. Whitneys debut was light and optimistic. While songs like Vision of Love, Vanishing, I Dont Wanna Cry were dark. And the vocals on You Need Me, Prisoner, Sent from Up Above were aggressive. Sooo typical 90's. If people say that Madonna's music defined the 80's, then Mariah is the Madonna of the 90's.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 That has nothing to do with the musical style of the song. You're talking about lyrics, I'm talking about music.
Vision of Love is not a dark song at all. It has a great, optimistic message.
Whitney was VERY vocally aggressive: Didn't We Almost Have It All, So Emotional, Love is a Contact Sport, Love Will Save the Day, You're Still MY Man.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier What are you talking about? I was referring to the musical aspects of those songs. But lyrically, they are also very bleak.
Vision of Love - good complex message, but musically dark. Her lower register on this song is chilling.
The only "bright" song on Mariahs debut is There's Got to be a Way.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 There is no musical genre called "dark" or "light", so it doesn't matter. It was still polished pop music like Whitney's was.
The feeling of the album may have been "dark", but that has more to do with the lyrics. It was still of the same genre and vocal style of Whitney's debut for the most part.
Example- Listen by Beyonce is more "dark" than IWALY or Hero, but still musically similar and without them, Listen probably wouldn't exist.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier I dont indicate "darkness" or "lightness" to be a genre. Im referring to the feeling. And the feeling could be different depending on each individual which is why we have been arguing this for over three hours. But if I could convert it in musical terms - those 'dark songs' Ive mentioned are sung in Mariah's mid-lower register. And her lower register, I tfind to be a bit spookey, hence the dark remark. (the sci-fi influenced opening on VOL).
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Yes, the feeling may have been different, the musical aspects were similar.
Again, none of this refutes the fact that WH and MC were musically similar for the most part up until 1995.
Chimier 1 year ago
@skye009 As I said, from 1995 onwards, Whitney and Mariah stopped doing similar things. Both were doing R&B, but Mariah was more hip-hop oriented.
Chimier 1 year ago
@skye009 Whitney's debut and her second album sound NOTHING alike. Yes, they both used a similar musical format, but her sophomore album drew more on soul influences, as shown by Just the Lonely Talking Again and For the Love of You. It also had way more uptempos, like So Emotional, a rock heavy rhythmic driven pop song, Love is a Contact Sport, Love Will Save the Day. Only IWDWS was similar to HWIK, but it had a more rhythmic feel to it.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Are you kidding? Its almost a track for track exchange! And I believe that was a predominent critique common in the reviews for her second album.
How Will I Know=I Wanna Dance With Somebody
You Give Good Love=So Emotional
All At Once=Didn't we Almost Have it All & Where Do Broken Hearts Go.
...and thats all that i can come up with from the top of my head.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 You Give Good Love sounds NOTHING like So Emotional. So Emotional is an uptempo, with clear elements in rock music involved, such as the electric guitar and driving rhythmic line.
That's like me saying that I Belong to You is musically similar to Queen of the Night. IWDWS is more rhythmic than HWIK, All at Once isn't as balladry as DWAHIA and WDBHG.
The predominant critique was that the album used a similar format to her debut, as I said, but it sounded nothing alike.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier GLOA is nothing I havent heard from Dionne Warwick before. In fact, it bares a striking resemblance to I'll Never love this Way Again. What I will admit, her debut did spawn a "diva factor". But even before that, the consummate diva was Diana Ross. And there were countless "divas" just awakening from a disco era hangover (Cher, Donna Summer, etc.)
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 None of those ladies could sing like Whitney. None of them had a debut that started a trend in music like Whitney's did. Even Nancy Wilson credited Whitney for bringing back great singing into music. Not just Nancy Wilson, but music historians.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier And that is true. At a time when the disco craze was over, but dance music was still popular, you didnt need a good voice (hence the fascination with someone was talentless as Madonna). I will always acknowledge Whitney for reviving the power vocalist movement of the mid-80's to late 90's, but it ends there for me.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Well, it doesn't end there for music historians or the singers who came after her. Whitney's legacy is HUGE. She's the most influential female singer of the past 25 years. No other person combined Streisand's sound with Aretha's style of singing so perfectly. No one made such an impact upon their debut. While Whitney's career last decade was practically dead, her influence was not and is not.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Good for her and her fans. but you just proved what I initially stated. her legacy is based on her voice. I can argue until the rapture that Mariah is the bigger trendsetter.

@skye009 And she is the bigger trendsetter, but Whitney is more influential.
Whitney's legacy is based on her SINGING, not necessarily her voice, and I never denied her singing took prominence in her legacy, but it is no secret that she was quite the trendsetter from her debut.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Dont think so. Mariah has covered more ground in music from 1993-1997, while Whitney was focusing on her movie career.
And in terms of diversity in their music catalogue, Mariah wins by a country mile. Which is why people from Carrie Underwood to Rihanna to Nelly Furtado to Nicki Minaj have cited Mariah as an influence (not all younger artists are influenced by both as many would think).
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 Yes, Mariah has covered more ground, but again, it doesn't refute the fact that up until 1995, she was very musically similar to Whitney, one of the main reasons she was compared to her. Mariah even acknowledged this in a Vibe 1998 issue when she said , "I don't think we even do similar things at this point", which was very true.
Rihanna has also cited Whitney as an influence, Fantasia, Monica, J-Hud, as have young up and coming artists like Matisse and Melonie Fiona.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier I happen to think her interpretation skills have deteriorated more than her technical abilities.
Example:
The arrangement I Wanna Dance With Somebody on Dancing with the stars was clearly thinned out so her voice wouldnt be completely drowned. And her phrasing was terrible on all levels. She bunches lyrics together, taking away from the original melody. The transcendent energy she established in the original recording was unheard of in that performance.
skye009 1 year ago
@skye009 That has nothing to do with phrasing. "Bunching lyrics together" speaks more to diction than phrasing. Phrasing refers to the melodic and rhythmic aspects of singing (i.e manipulating syllables and pitches together). Whitney's phrasing is excellent. She can sing a shade behind the beat or on the beat, she can craft new melodies by building from old ones.
She's a MUCH better interpreter now than she was before (ex. Stormy Weather 1993 vs 2010). Much better.
Chimier 1 year ago
@Chimier Personally, I dont think much for phrasing without thinking of articulation.

At her prime, there was and will not be a voice like hers, so cute and powerful at the same time. So right now if she wants to keep singing on stage I think it's between her and her audience. If ppl are willing to go see her why not she should keep singing.

I love Whitney, think is great she came from all troubles in her life, but saying Honestly? Is better stop now than go ahead with such "show" that lost the real meaning of it, long time ago.
People who think she is still good, of course, are people who has nothing else to do unless try to earn money with her...

If you want to be entertained, to laugh and to have the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, then get yourself to a Whitney concert pronto!
Honestly, if the concert was a load of shit, I would have said.
colby82 1 year ago
To be sane about it, no, she doesn't sound like the Whitney that we all hear on a older studio recording. I think it's important to realise that she is not 25 years old anymore and her sound has simply evolved. She now has a much more textured voice than that note perfect sound. The cracks and imperfections sounded interesting and edgy. We loved it.
colby82 1 year ago
Went and saw her last night (28/Apr/2010) and in all honesty, we were expecting a bit of a carcrash from Whitney. I'm not really a diehard fan; I love a couple of her older ballads but hadn't really listened to her new album. The tickets were a birthday gift. I was worried about it being awful as I had listened to all the 'reports' that have been made very public.
I could not believe what I was looking at on stage. The woman is nothing short of amazing. Whitney rocked!

Well she can certainly still hold the notes. This sounded good. At least she's not miming as so many so called 'stars' do today.

Every singer reaches a certain when they cannot sing the way they did when they were young. Whitney's vocal woes are no doubt exacerbated by her troubles with drugs. She should lower the keys and learn how to adjust to her new lower register.
torresongs2 1 year ago
In what way is this a response? She is f*cking terrible in this clip as well.
I'm not saying "Don't Do Drugs, Kids"... I just think it's time she said "I've done too much crack... sorry kids.... have a refund"
Rosco1888 1 year ago
she is much better here than 26th...she is overdoing it.....and wrecking her reputation.....she should be doing 3 or 4 songs with a warmed up voice on tv....not wrecking what she has touring and singing the old stuff that is too hard....she is being exploited and more so are her fans
markcamperdog 1 year ago
People are cheering when she hits any note not as they used to when she hit the high notes. Come one Whitney, time to give up singing live and start miming, the fans will thank you for it, if they wanted to pay to listen to singing like this they would buy their nan a drink down the pub and watch her on kareoke night and she sounds better. Tom Jones and Lulu can still sing because they don't smoke.
SecretSylph 1 year ago
@SecretSylph I can't believe people are suggesting that she mimes. I'd have so much more respect if she released a statement announcing that she's cancelling her tour because she has learned that she's not ready and the constant days of travelling and touring have only been worse for her voice. I don't think lip syncing would be good. It's not like britney spears or lady gaga where they have dancing to fall back on - all she does is sing.

Oh yea, one more thing. Im sure I saw her spit on the stage during her opening remarks after the first song.
ivh1968 1 year ago
I was there on monday night near the front. I think she mimed to the first song.
Her voice wasnt that bad though. She just cant sing above the mid-range anymore so she struggles with the big power ballads. But, she put on a great show and held it together.
ivh1968 1 year ago
I went to see her at The O2 last night and loved it! I had a great time, singing and dacning!!!! She wasn't terrible like some people say but she wasn't the amazing Whitney that everyone has grown to love, shes still a good singer and she still put on a great show. The crowd were behind her 100% everyone was cheering, clapping and singing and dancing along. I loved it and I'd definately go again!!
MyWillYoungVideos 1 year ago
She should stick to her new reportoire (this song is beautiful) and not sing the old songs. They don't fit her voice anymore. Get a new management and launch the new older Whitney.
Whitney I will always love you!!!! Thank you so much for all the joy you've been giving us.

Whitney, continue on your journey to recovery and watch the Universe open up for you. God Bless you!
(ps. this is the best version that I have heard of this song. Its proof that although her voice is fragile and inconsistent, It is still there. With plenty of rest, care and training it can get better. And I am praying for that! )

whitney is still whitney, no one can replace her name in the music industry. she has inspired a lot of newbies and her songs will still remain hers. If u notice in most singing competition, its whitney's song they are singing. because they know that whitney's music is different from others. its unique, powerful and meaningful. No one is perfect in this world so whatever happens to her life its her choice, atleast she has contributed a lot in music industry. We still love whitney!
