  • Well, it may suck, but it would have really really sucked if it had been in gear, eh? Thank God for small miracles.

  • Sorry to hear about the "event" here Kyle. I was excited to come and see the project as I haven't checked up in a while. I know that gut wrenching feeling you get when something goes wrong... I had the same one the day my motor mount busted and everything fell to ground. Keep the faith, it will come together my friend.

  • Kyle has now placed a 'Donate' button on his website.

I've tested the donate button and it works well.

Now - everyone please help Kyle out by donating to this good cause.

    Eric.

  • You'll have to finish your wiring and double check everything before turning it on again after the new controller is in. No more of this temporary hook up. Eric

  • Kyle, place a PayPal donate button "To save Kyle's EV" on your home page. We all want to donate. Hopefully Kelly will come to the party with your controller upgrade. Eric

  • bummer,

hook it up threw the key swith cause were all conditioned to remove keys

  • How is the motor, with no load they can tear themselves apart.

  • I haven't checked anything since it happened, but I think the motor is still o.k. It was only full throttle for about 5-10 seconds..

    Kyle

  • I'm just glad you had it out of gear. A setback is much better than an accident.

  • Yea it's a bummer, I am aware that the contactor should've been open while charging, but evidently i forgot to shut it off last night as I was in a hurry. I hope and pray that they'll take it back, if not, I'll probably see if people would be willing to make some small donations to help me pay for it. (After all, I am a poor college student)

Thanks for the ratings and comments,

    Kyle

  • Bummed to hear about your misshap, however overjoyed that only the controller threw its guts out and not your guts all over the garage.

Maybe you should draw up some schematics and post it online so we can look at it and comment. Contractors to motor and controller should be open when the "ignition is off"... There should be no chance in hell for such thing to happen. Unless something is jerry rigged, or you simply left the ignition on? did you?

  • Yea, the wiring is up to snuff, I just forgot to turn the ignition off. Right now it's not going through the key ignition, I just have a switch controlling the contactor, controller, and the potbox. I guess I'll live and learn :-P

    Kyle

  • That was.... well.... human error then.... You need to think of a way for the car to let you know its ON, a brigth red ligth under the hood and something else inside the car.....

When you permanently wire the chargers you need to make it to where they wont start charging when car i on and car wont start with chargers plugged in and charging.

  • That's wired. The controller should have been powered off with the main contactor open. That should make it immune to charging transients. It also points out why you need a separate mechanical battery disconnect. When these unipolar controllers fail, 99% of the time they go into a dead short mode which equals full power on.

  • Dang it! That's too bad about the controller, but it's good that it was in neutral! Have you considered building the open source controller that Ben Nelson was talking about? I think that's what I'm going to do for my next controller.

  • man. sorry to hear. this is brand new territory for me. i always hold my breath when charging the car. i too have 10 EV miles so far. best wishes for a speedy recovery! glad you're ok.

  • I rememver hearing about a backflow preventer. now that may be plumbing I am unsure but its worth a look.

  • FRACK, Well at least your ok. Top priority has been acheaved. I have a uggestion, you put in a manual direct cut off for the controller so that when your charging the batteries they are in a closed loop. That way there is no power going to anything else. it could be done with a breaker between the master cable and the connection to the controller. there should be one available to handle it. Main thing is your ok.

  • hey kyle. bad news mate! did you have the controller out of the loop when charging? it needs to be on the other side of the main contactor so that no current flows through it when charging. if it is when charging, the cause of this accident would unfortunately have been caused by charging the batteries while having the controller hooked up. it must be open ciruit for charging!

let me know how you go mate! maybe we could start up a donations page for you to get another one?

    cheers

  • Donation page? I give him my 5$ bux, i feel bad for him, got paypal? I'd do it trough that (:
