I have seen many videos with numerous "peaceful" demonstrators armed and taking hostages, screaming "Allah Akbar". Obviously soldiers messed up killing lots of civilians, but I doubt that Uzbekistan under religious-extremist rule would be better.
I have a classmate who lives in Andijan. He claims there were around 2000 people killed that day. He saw a body of a girl aged around 5 years old torn apart.

I worked for the government at that time. I know that Uzbek government agents organized this upprisal. Then they presented the demonstration as islamic rebel fight to the Western governments in order to justify barbaric killing of ordinary people. hey, not defending the government or anything, but it was not a peaceful protest. Gunman broke into an administrative building and took government workers hostage and rallied in the square. The government responded with the shoot out.
Though there was lack of a peaceful protest on the citizens' side, the government still has an obligation to follow the rule of law to give people trial with justice.
