If you're at a shipper or receiver and are basically at your 11 or 14 hour limit what do you do? Let them unload and hope they're fast or say sorry and find a place to shut down for 10 hours? It's kind of hard knowing which is worse... pissing off the customer or not breaking the rules. (wanna-be trucker here)
@cskillet2003 Well normally you make previsions to not show up close to the end of your hrs, that you figure out in preplanning your trip. however things like traffic congestion ect can affect that. You do your best to have it done before, if not, about the only thing you can do is wait. rarely will a coustomer have place/let you rest on their property, so you'll have to go to the first safe place to park.
thanks for all the info, just started trucking school today. It all started with them damn Log books all day lecture. I still have issues understanding it. This video answers a lot of my questions. Thanks ! San Diego, California . . .
hey sean man thats looks complicated. u think it would be easier to get a computer program to keep track of log book activites. or is mandatory to do it on paper.
What a pain in the ass your system is. Over here in Europe we use digital tachographs - like a credit card which records all my driving duties. Much easier than messing about with paper.
very good information Sean, well done on this section, certainly cleared up some of the myths about trucking.
and very well constructed, as in giving us a good idea on how to work it, you explained how to do the time change, how do you mark with the minus hour say you are driving at 1:30 am - 6:00? do you mark the hour as off duty. or do the gap in the line with an explanation?
Great information Sean, you just helped me understand one more thing that you truckers do in the trucking industry. (One question though), When your driving in the States, and your log is correct like you did. If you reach 9 o'clock for the 11 hr. stop line, Do you have to pull off the road at that point and shut off the truck to be legal? I see trucks pull off the road or are off the road and I wonder if it's because of their log book hrs. (That is one thing I want to clear up in my mind)
No, But you can't log anymore hours beyond this point, In-less in Canada. You can drive 13 in Canada. You can however drive to the nearest truck stop, walmart, gas station, ect. Most people would say this is in the off-duty part of the log book., but really it's your time.
Really good vid. Just out of trucking school. Spot-on from what I was taught, plus you mentioned what to do during a day with daylight saving time which the school did not!
I am not a truck driver (as you know), but I "got" all of your information, and I did feel this to be clear and concise. You may have felt you confuse things, and it could be confusing to new drivers, but all jobs can be for the first week or so (I know mine was where I work) with all the variables, etc.
13:21 "if only a log book could really look like this" It CAN :-) I didnt know that about the z line and skipping the hr in the line when the time changed. I just always logged it like nothing changed and gained an hour or lost an hr. OK, ill stfu with all my self incriminating statements. 5/5
very well put Sean. they're changing our log books again and its getting annoying. im pretty sure theres alot of drivers out there using your tutorials themselves lol
Yep the company just got a new batch of books that have some new sections on em that go into greater deatil on the inspection part and the vehicle maintence log and recap
that was great ! i cant wait for the next one. also you point out at the end that this is a best case scenario for the log book.. in the next video can u give some examples of problems that you end up with in practice, thanks! great vid

if i took 1 hour for a lunch break , does that hour cut from the 14 hour work period ?thank you for replying back
tiffanyt600 2 years ago
@tiffanyt600 Yes. The only thing that resets the 14 hour clock is your 10 hour break.

is off duty and sleeper berth considered to be the same
tiffanyt600 2 years ago
No. Off duty can be anywhere, doing anything but work. Sleeper has to be in the bunk getting rest

Thanks for putting this together, Sean. It's a great crash course. On second thought, probably shouldn't use the word crash, but you get the point.

Can you show us how to "adjust" the books when we screw up on hours. Is there a way to stay legal in the books when you mess up your schedule.
