I love how Vivaldi and Rossini were, perhaps, the only ones who allowed for women who were contraltos to play feminine roles. Nowadays they are almost all forced to, as the famous quote says,"play the witches, bitches, and in breeches".
Ce ne fossero in giro oggi...
I certainly don't think that "COUNTERTENOR" JOCHEN KOWALSKI would have a bit of envy for Ewa's voice. Have you heard him sing "Va, va, l'error mio palesa" and "Venga pur, minacci e frema," from Mozart's Mitridate?, and he is a MAN. Also Lisa Gerrard and Diamanda Galas can have much better low tones than Ewa.
If he is a MAN and was not evirated while he was a child, I wonder why he will insist on singing as a treble voice: it's a false way of performing ang goes against centuries of operatic tradition where false-tists never plaied any role at all and treble parts were always sung either by castrati or by female singers.
she is NOT a man... and regarding your comments against counter tenors... go back to the 30's and read up about XVIII century history coz there were lots of falsetto singers around, as understudies to castrati, etc.
you haven't got a clue man! it only goes against ONE century and a bit of operatic tradition... and who cares about tradition... counter tenors are great!!!! we dont castrate any longer so what's the fuss?
Of course, I had suspected myself that Ewa Podleś was not a man; in fact, I was just anwering somebody (probably jovi1715) who would praise some countertenors performance by alleging that the singer was a MAN. As for the rest: 1. no single role was ever created by countertenors throughout castratis whole era; 2. no countertenors were ever employed in any major theatre to substitute for a castrato.
Being Italian, I can assure you I perfectly know the correct plural of castrato; as for you, you might probably have suspected castratis wouldnt be the plural of castrato, but the genitive of castrati, wrongly transcribed for some mysterious reasons, or mightnt you? As for the substance, were still waiting for you to cite at least either just one role originally created by a falsettist in the 18th centurys Italian opera or just one case of substitution of a countertenor for a castrato, man!
We are still awaiting some examples of the lots of falsetto singers around's exploits during the castrati epoch. If you do not cite any, everybody will have to conclude it's you, man, that haven't got a clue!
ok, you've won... i am 'ill-bred' (sic) and you are the cleverest person in the whole wide world... satisfied? if three months ago i wasn't going to go check Peter Giles or Dean to look for information just to give you sad pleasure, i am definitely not going to do it now... Im ill-bred or whatever and you are great, for everyone to know!!!!
I agree. Bravissimo Ewa!. Although I still think countertenors have a peculiar particularity about them, that makes their work a lot more admirable, THEY ARE MEN!!!!.
I agree, I personally can't stand to perform or hear other contralto and mezzos in pants roles. I think those roles belong to men (countertenor or castrati). But Ewa is wonderful in certain things like Giulio Cesare as Cornelia.
Yes!!! she is a great Cornelia although I didn't like her Seattle (?) Cesare... I think it was in Seattle anyway... she wasn't very good, weird though as she is even better live than in recording.
I don't like her rendition of Handel aries in her CD but it goes down to style more than her undoubtledly beautiful voice...
ewa really does have the best nel profundo on record....we cant really deny that...the voice is super natural.

I hate to burst your bubble, but this character is Orlando, and he's very male. :-)

I know that, and I never said I liked to hear her in this role.

Love this! Sounds perfect to my ears - soaring and heroic. Wish she would have done the whole opera while she was at it.

I had. And I like these arias much better in Vesselina Kasarova's interpetation, and she's not even a contralto.
