The guy who said "Alligator" misinterpreted the question, he thought they were asking for an animal with one letter three times in its name. Alligator really doesn't fit that, though it's not that stupid of an answer for the question he thought he was asked. He said something to Richard right after this posting fades out about how he thought they meant the same letter.

If you're making a trick question on a test, you could do that, like "how many months have 28 days in them" and the answer is all of them. However, the question in English is commonly understood to mean exactly three letters. That's the convention, and that's how it should have been understood.

My theory is that things like cats and dogs, if we were to categorize them, would far more easily fall into the category of "pets" while those other examples are more thought of as "(wild) animals."
