I can't believe it; this is a serious matter, and I wonder if those of you evoquing this racial issues are Christians. You should be enjoying the music played instead of distracting us. Oh, my God help your people, please!
IF you ever visit the Salvation Army corps in eastern michigan, the members are predomenetly white, many of the members are old salvation army officers, and mostly all of the people in the EMYB are related to one another.
You obviously have no clue what you r talkin about. I come from South Africa and there r just as many black players as white players(if not more) and this was during the apartheid times as well (The salvation army was one of the only churches to ignore the policies put in place by the Aprtheid Government). All musicians play for free using there time to minister to others with a Gift God Gave them, there is no gain for us except bringing people closer to God through music.

Hmmm! Where are the African-Americans in this Salvation Army cult scenario? These SA brass band music hobbyists are all white. Maybe there should be a Congressional investigation to determine why underprivileged African-American and other disadvantaged people of color are ignored by this cult, whose efforts are funded by the good public giver in the U.S. The SA raises money based on their claim they help the poor, but they finance their cult with these funds.
Have you ever actually looked at how much the SA DOES do with the funds they receive ?
WHO was one of the first "non emergency services" groups at the 9-11 attacks ? The SA and their support services providing food and drinks to the firemen.
Who was the ONLY non emergency service allowed inside the inner cordons after the London tube bombings ? The SA feeding and councilling the services working in the tunnels.
I'm a sixth generation Salvationist. My roots in the church go back to England when the SA was the only church which would allow my inter-racially married great-great gradparents through the door. My half-black great-grandmother (Brig. Beatrice Williams) was a pastor in the denomination serving in India and southern Ontario. I don't see the racial bias (statistics notwithstanding).
That being said, even I find Le Nozze di Figaro for brass somewhat irresponsible.
Dave: As an ex-salvationist and bandsman, I am very happy to see "outside" music being used by Army bands. I believe it increases the attractiveness of the band to the general public. I'm sorry that the 'Joystrings' approach was not continued.
Look up one of the former bandmasters of the Canadian Staff Band, Kevin Hayward. Or perhaps the soprano cornet of the National Capital Band (more than him, there's a few), or the principal trombone from the New York Staff Band. Why do you speak from such ignorance? You talk about that which you do not know, and you hate that which you have not learned about. Your words do nothing to hurt the Salvation Army, because they are unfounded, and God will not allow your lies to hurt us.
rpiercy3; You seem to be in love with the word "cult". "African-Americans"? There are a lot of white folks in So. Africa, so what you are saying is that you don't see any black folks in this band. I know there is a black trombone player in the Canadian Staff Band. It depends what part of the country you are in as to whether you will see black people in the S.A.
Great sound awesome when corps get together and Praise God.

the Sturmabteilung? If you remember, the last religious armies to ply the world were either Crusaders or Jihads. I served in the real army.

The S.A. does not discriminate against any race.
