  • 9 mile dosent loram have more advanced grinders now?

  • This is an old Pandrol -Jackson rail grinder,I think they were bought by a company called Hulcher? They do not grind the rail flat! they grind a specific profile which helps the rail last longer.loram builds and operates rail grinders, ballast cleaners, ditchers and other rail maintenance equipment..I worked for them for 4 years.

  • @9milebandit- Harsco not Hulcher.

  • I saw one going north, next to I-25 last Saturday (8-8-09). Had no clue what it was -we thought it was on fire -it was smoking way more than this one. Thick brown smoke.

  • nice looken rail grinder

  • I read in a TRAINS magazine article (on Pandrol Jackson) that those jobs are hard as hell even though it looks like the train does all the work, they are always hiring and quiting is not a surprise. But in the 33 years i've been a train enthusiasts, i've never seen one.

  • the foam i know is for fire protection for the grass but i bet its repairs the rail in some way

  • they are grinding the rail flat and level, needs to be done once in a while on rail if you intend to run trains at high speed.

  • Thats not a LORAM. Thats just a railroad built an assembled grinder. LORAM is a company that gets paid to use there equipment to shape the rails. Good catch thoe! I bet it was ear shattering loud in person.

  • That is a Pandrol jackson rail grinder. this company was taken over by HTT. ( This is not LORAM ) The blue color locomotives at the rear is HTT, The front loco is LORAM but the rear is Pandrol Jackson.

  • Awesome footage!! this is the LORAM railgrinder. Can anyone answer this question for me? My mom remembers seeing this railgrinder when she was growing up and this one railgrinder had a huge jolly rogers flag in the rear with them spotlights shining down on it. Does anyone recall seeing a railgrinder like that?

  • oh yes, that was the infamous 'Unauthorized' rail grinder. It was run by a company that ran it without permission of the railroad. I'm not sure why they did that, but it might have been publicity.

  • Its the LROAM Railgrinder meaning it grinds the rails down a bit. The water is used to sotp any trackside fires from starting.
