  • pukey pete--this defined him and his career! what a moment!

  • 5:08 nike commercial I've Got Soul But I'm Not A Soldier , D

  • how shxx that umpire is...and how great Sampras is!!!

  • Absolutely astonishing... His body yelled "I can't go any further, I really can't, I'm down, no way!" and his mind just answered "F%& YOU, YOU CAN! YOU HEAR ME? YOU CAN!!!!"

What an amazing athlete, what a will to win...

  • 4:46 Is when he pukes since people was asking :P

  • people stop hating on djokovic because he is better than nadal!

  • @bobbyiscooly Yea this year but last years he was nowhere,Rafa was the king, remember 2008 year ;)

  • i remember watching this live...to me this match defines pete sampras and why i still think he's better than federer.

  • I love that camera angle they have at around 1:30. you don't really see that angle much anymore.

  • Pete thought "Just puked all over the court...better finish this now so I can wash out my mouth." He wins...like a boss.

  • imagine sampras in the 70-68 match. he would have died.

  • @warrenvazquez not really, because a) he got fitter, b) its wimbledon and c) he's a whole lot better of a returner than isner or mahut.

  • These were the golden days of tennis....everyone no matter if u were number 1 or 100 was fighting for every sngle point...simply beautiful to watch

  • Anyone who says Sampras is a loser/faker/actor is a complete and utter idiot! Sampras played/won so many matches by sucking up the pain and getting on with it...not like some of the weaklings of the game today who will forfeit a match or have the physio on for the slightest bit of pain or cramp! Sampras was epitome of a true champion!

  • @WhoLueYou u call a marathon 5 setter in which federer won 7-5 in the fifth set ownage? haha! i know ur one of those ridiculous and blind federer fans whose allergic to the names of pete sampras and rafael nadal. And what about federer's crybaby act in the 2009 aussie open final. I think that's a better nominee for an oscar.

  • @WhoLueYou You're the only fucking actor here you sensless jackoff!!!.. How can you call someone with 14 majors a loser??? Pete is the LEAST dramatic person ever to play and is always quiet and down to busines... If threw up you jackoff did'nt you see the video.. You don't fake something like that...Awwww Let me guess you young prick, you like Federer so Pete just has to be a loser now right??? WAAAAAAAHHH!!!........... THUMBS UP THAT THIS IS A TOTAL PRICK PEOPLE!!!!

  • what an a hole the ump. was. people can never look past the obvious and give a person a break. dam pete was as green as the court in appearence. probably helped him throwing up.felt for alex double faulting on match point but i think pete woulda hit a winner anyway cuz his shot went past corretja but it was a double fault.

  • who are the commentators?

  • One of them is John Mcenroe. Don't know the other, not American and haven't heard him elsewhere.

  • @SoooBlue thanks!!!

  • /nod anabeautifulmind

  • I remember watching this and thinking this was the most amazing war of attrition i had ever seen on a "battlefield" of sport. I've watched Pete his entire career and he will ALWAYS be my favorite. Several years ago was watching a Final between Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo (sorry about spelling) and Henis "retired" because she had a "tummy ache" all I could think of was THIS match with Pete. This was a stalwart and amazing personal triumph from a magnificent warrior.

    Miss you Pete!

  • yeah, Sampras was the best, but if Pistol Pete was the best, Corretja deserves some praises, because he could win this amazing battle in a 5set thriller against Sampras at home. And he lost thanks to that double fault....

  • @anabeautifulmind True, but Henin and Mauresmo weren't in a US Open final either. When stakes are high enough I think any tennis player is willing to sacrifice at least a little bit of injury.

I think after Pete threw up he was ok, looked to me like he was to some extent acting to psychologically mess with the opponent's perception of Pete's status? He might start underestimating Pete and before you know it he's comin' out blazin'

  • @aquaimmy

Actually I didn't say it was the U.S.Open Final, it was the Australian Open Final three and a half years ago.

I'm not sure how much you know about Thalassemia, but I can assure you Pete was not playing mind games with Alex. He was doing well to stand up on his own.

Perhaps you had to see it live (we had the very good fortune of seeing it) and you could see much more than on a television screen.

Regardless, both players left everything they had on that court!

    Cheers!

  • We were there!! Wife got the tickets in the courtside boxes. I alternated cheering for both sides as it was destined to go five (got some slack from a New Yorker who wanted Pete to end it in four). Sampras was otherwordly. I really believe Corretja, in the biggest match of his life until then, did not have the killer instinct to put away Pete while he was on the verge of collapsing. But it was freakin' electric.

  • novak should watc this clip. Maybe he'll think twice about forfeiting over a sore throat.

  • i gave you a plus 1 for the joke....

but seriously, being ill because of exhaustion is different to having asma and being unable to breathe

although it is hard to know with Novak

  • Novak has issues with his breathing, sore throat is much worse for him then for others.

  • @itzzbui Novak is a wimp though

  • @itzzbui Actually, Djokovic did in fact throw up during a match, just not on the court. It was the 2008 US Open Quarterfinal match against Andy Roddick, in which he won with outstanding tennis.

You have to understand that Novak's injuries and health problems are as real as Nadal's knee problems.

  • @itzzbui

Novak has had plenty of 4 hour matches. Whenever he retires it's because it would affect his play.

  • This is still the most awesome win I've ever seen - I couldn't believe when Pete pulled out this win.

    Awesome stuff!

  • Amazing match from Pete, this is why he was N1 year end for 6 years. I always enjoy watching the king of the Swing.

  • This is the match between the 2nd best player ever (because his serve was even better than Federer) against the classiest player.

Sampras had always problems in the 5th set, Federer has much more resistance.

  • You mean endurance

  • Nothing but guts and muscle memory here, folks. No normal human being has any business beating a top 15 player under these conditions.

  • This was the first tennis match I ever saw. Had no interest in the sport before this and watched it on a total whim. By this fifth set tiebreak, I was a total goner, irretrievably hooked, a complete junkie: tennis kicked serious amounts of boo-tay and Pete Sampras? THE MAN. Thanks for uploading this!

  • last game of the year brent, can't hold anything back now!

  • He won that tournament....

  • pistol Pete the best

  • anyways, pete was the shit. never made a big deal out of anything, just got on with it and beat everybody's asses.

  • it IS a little cold to give him a time delay warning, but it was just a warning. i'm sure the ump didn't really want to give him one but it is in the rules...

  • what the heck!! how the hell is it fair 2 giv the guy a delay of game warning???

  • what kind of grunt is tat?!?!?

  • wow, I'm not really a fan of pete, but damn, playing through those conditions, definitely a lot of respect for the guy. Unlike, some other people no a days who retire because of soar throats.

  • cought Jnovack Jockavich cough cough

  • I know wat you mean... pete was phenomenal... I am a huge Fed fan, but to me, Pete will always be.... the Greeek God. His simglemindedness, the focus, the dedication... he was iron will in nike shoes..!!

  • Pete is a legend.

  • You gotta agree the umpire was too strict, but he was indeed delaying. There's timeouts for that.

In any case, this was a great game among two great players, and any of the two would have deserved to advance. As he's from my land, I was rooting for Alex, but Pete hang in there at the limit of his own health to win it, and to this I can only say Congratulations, and thank you for such a great game.

  • did Pete win this match dear God he owned Alex any day

  • yea won pete won in 5, 9-7 in the tiebreak, as in the us open in the fifth set, they play a deciding tiebreak. Sampras is just the greatest hero and tennis player that has ever graced the tennis world.

  • yeah fuck the umpire

  • I had goosebumps and was teary eyed when i saw this match live on tv. I've been a fan of Pete since 93....when we had our first cable conection, that is. Ever since then he has the making of a great champion. So many well known players were on the tour that time but after seeing Pete play...i had my eyes on him and caught the bug of tennis and has been a fanatic...but that fades when Sampras retired...Well there's Nadal now so my tennis bug rejuvinates as it is.

  • federer too?

  • Before this match, I was more of an Agassi fan. Afterwards I knew I would never like any tennis player more than Sampras.

    Ever.

  • A delay of game warning when the guy is vomiting? What a loser that umpire is!

  • Well I think Pete had the choice to call a medical time out, which would be a bit more fair to Alex. He was taking a lot of time to serve and certainly kept Alex off guard.

A very good match I saw it live and taped it from 4 games all in the 5th, but the tape got wrecked, I'm glad it's posted thanks.

  • True, but how can a guy call a medical timeout WHILE he's throwing up?!?! It's really unfair for the umpire to count that against a player like that!

Pete wasn't doing it on purpose to throw off Alex. He was just trying to survive the match, poor guy!

A great match, I remember it vividly when I saw it live. I've been a Sampras fan ever since -- it was great to see such a fantastic effort by Pete, but at the same it was also hard to watch him suffer like this too!

  • Actually, you cant take a medical timeout because of any problems related to exhaustion. It´s not allowed and has always been like that (remember the cramping Baghdatis against Agassi?)

You can only take a timeout due to an injury.

Exhaustion is not an injury but a mere result of the game itself. It may seem retared but the umpire was 100% correct to award a warning for Sampras who wasted too much time.

  • @MikeyMikeisMe people don't get a rest during a game just because they're sick. bring your A-game to the court or don't play--but don't ask for any slack.

  • @MikeyMikeisMe he didnt want to, he had to

  • One of the best matchs, in a looooong time.
