back then toyota had a good balance between quanity and quality such as this corolla for example..then in the 2000s toyotas like fuck quality we need even more cars to sell and now its quanity over quality sadly
Good car, my brother's friend's parent's had a '96 Toyota Corolla with over 450,000 kilometres (~279,000 miles). We had a '98 Toyota Corolla VE with over 360,000 miles (~579,000 kilometres) (American-Market Car). Now we have an '06 Toyota Camry LE with over 226,000 kilometres (~140,000 miles) and an '07 Toyota Corolla CE with over 87,000 kilometres (~54,000 miles). Toyotas are probably the best cars overall (since 1985 onwards).
I was in one of these, a ce 5 speed manual, we were rear ended, but it still works great, love it so much, thankfully the people owning it aren't going to trade it in for the new craPolla, because they know the new ones are poorly made.
Friend of mine had a 1996. Mixed colored body panels, dents everywhere, tattered interior, repaired after being wrecked, not well running tranny, bad ball bearings, and it shook and vibrated a lot. But MAN it felt so solid and still rode very smoothly for what it was. It was said the Toyota engineering boss in charge of developing this generation Corolla was striving to create a mini Lexus.
Tachometer for a 3-speed auto is pointless, id rather see the temp anyways....one of the few 90's cars you see on the roads still (civic, jettas), great review. Toyota realized if they were this efficient on newer models no one would ever NEED a new one, with our 97 ce we kno we dont. Easy maintence, easy fixes, cheap parts, good mpg.
Awesome, awesome car. I have a 1997 CE in black. 251,000 miles. Bought it over six years ago with 89k on it. Never had ONE single problem with it in all of that time. It rides well, and goes pretty good for a 1.6 4cyl. Low acceleration is poor, but mid-range 40-70mph it picks up and is respectable. Great car. Longevity and reliability is truly amazing. Only complaint is engine noise, which you get used to, and the seats are a little unforgiving on long journeys.
Yeah these cars were simple to fix and great running. Slow as shit though. My Grandpa had a 94 with 190k before he passed. Car did have cold A/C but it slowed the car down even more.
It seems Toyota in General took the same road GM took, that being quantity over quality which didn't play out so well for GM.
Oh the 98-02 corolla thing is not personal opinion, it's fast. Back in the late 90's & early 2000's. My dad stopped dealing with them all together cause they were nothing but trouble (engine wise) And the Interior was horrible. Engine sludge even with good maintenance & the interiors deteriorate. Faster car & more powerful? Yes -- Better Looking? Yes -- More Reliable? No -- More Durable? No -- Problematic? Yes..... We deal with 2003 & newer but they are still junk & built poorly
@Intechdude300 The 1998 Corolla actually for my parents and I, the rust protection is much more superior than the 1992-96 Corollas but yeah, the 2003 and up, yeah, thats gett'n shitty!
@Intechdude300 Yeah, I agree, but there are some cheap ass plastic like the outer trim on the dash, hard as hell but the door panel is padded half way but mostly people touch the top more than the bottom? What can you do with 10 Mr.Krabs deciding what the car should be made of in their office! But the big three I have a major problem with, the 2010 Caravan has problems with every gauge, whenever you push forward the gauges go up and go down! Man, I think we need to spend a little more!
Gauges going on the fritz like that, sounds like a ground problem ( Electrical connection). Seen an issue on Windstars where all the gauges just dive down & suddenly all the way. You're 2010 so the dealer ought to fix that & I assume you don't have to spend anything other than gas & time to drive to your nearest chrysler dealer.
@Intechdude300 Well I don't own a Caravan but I seen the people who hate it! I have 1998 Toyota Corolla VE with a blue interior trim, believe it or not, it actually helps with headaches a bit!
I wasnt a fan of what happened but at least they've woken up and realized that building shit would bite them in the ass really hard later on down the road. It least they really improved most their 2011 products & the results of those improvements are really paying off.
It's not being biased. It's being smart and liking what you like. I think most american cars are crap. I don't think vette's are nice or any other muscle car. But I say ford's are really picking it up.
But really I'm not going by how I like, its just the truth. Toyota degraded quality & just concentrated with volume. Like said recently about the 2011 Model, Toyota knows that the Corolla Lacks behind everyone else like having a 4 Speed auto for example. Their excuse was that they're not worried about that fact because the name alone sells the car. How lame it that??
Someone I know has one, his is a 1999, VE (Value Edition), this is a CE (Crap Edition) model. No power windows, no cassette, no frills. But I will admit I like the '09s and '10s.
Toyota did make the Size & exterior looks of the 98-01 Corolla rather attractive but Toyota really screwed up the interior quality & the engine itself while more power it ended up being a Noisy POS which was prone for premature sludge & etc.
i thought subaru was cheap and lasy for not putting in a 4 speed auto in the 1990-1994 loyale only the 87-89 subaru gl equipped with a turbo charger got a 4 speed auto

1997 was when Toyota started to decontent (less sound insulation, more plastic, etc) their various car models.
megazythr 11 months ago
@megazythr IE when they started building in USA/Canada instead of Japan.

@talldude123 That's true. But the NUMMI plant in CA was a decent auto plant.

5 speed 31city 35combined 32 highway
4A 27city 30combined 34 highway
3A 25city 27combined 29 highway
i cant believe it gets that good of mpgs with only a 3 speed auto!
my grandmas 3 speed 92 subaru loyale manages 25 i think
but that has a tach and when your cruising at 55mph your turning 3.8K or more as apposed to a 5 speed 2.8k or 3k
thats alot of rpms to cruise on the highway
i wonder where the rpms are on the corolla...
