  • It freezes after awhile in virtual pc

  • @crazyharry39 suggest you look at my newer videos using virtualbox (free) or vmware

  • Thanks for taking the time to put that together. I will be installing Ubuntu on windows 7 this week.

Previously I used a dual boot system but am excited about trying the virtual PC.

  • You may wish to look for my newer videos that dcoument how to install newer versions of Ubuntu using either VMWare or VirtualBox rather than VirtualPC. I think you'll find the newer alternatives worki better.

  • @brucefulton I ended up using VirtualBox and it works great. It handles several versions of Linux. Ubuntu and suse are the ones I run most. I never was able to to get anything to run under Virtual PC.

  • @brucefulton I ended up using VirtualBox and it works great. It handles several versions of Linux. Ubuntu and suse are the ones I run most. I never was able to to get anything to run under Virtual PC.

  • Thanks SO much! It really works!!!

  • use virtual box. much easier. and free too.

  • I'm currently recommending VMware for power and features, but virtual box is a good free alternative

  • @brucefulton It's better to install Linux Ubuntu with the Wubi installer , and then install vmWare and VirtualBox inside Linux ... it is a way better way to do this... and gives you way more power... plus Virtual Machines run fast in Linux...

  • @maw88ify Only if you want to run linux _instead of_ windows (it acts like a dual boot option, one or the other). However if you want to run ubuntu server and make its web server and mysql available to the native windows or Mac install, you'll need this, or see my more recent videos using VMWare workstation, fusion or Virtualbox.

  • nice it works.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • thank you

  • It works! Thanks so much! This is so awesome!

  • Thanks man I never EVER would have been able to do this on my own. I tried installing several versions of windows and none of them worked. I wish I would have stumbled on to your tutorial sooner. Awesome OS also. Thanks bro :)

  • Problem. I cant get my keyboard working at the main username screen. I got everything working 100% but I cant log on because Its not reconizing my keyboard.

Do you know any way I can fix that?

  • click in the window to capture the mouse and keyboard.

  • It officialy works! Thanks!

  • Hi, I just want to so thank you so much! :D Only thing I had trouble with is the codes your were saying, you said them a little fast, but I got them eventually :D My Ubuntu is up and running perfectly, thanks~

PS tot he people who have so much trouble -

Just do exactly what he says, even it seems a little odd and you think something else should be done, just do exactly what he tells you, because mine works fine and im on Vista.

  • is there a way to get sound working ?

my device is a conexant HD audio

  • The sound card is not automatically detected so edit the file /etc/modules and add the following line:

    snd-sb16

  • Thx soooo much i've been trying to install ubuntu on virtual pc forever

  • Hey bruce, very nice tutorial and very easy to understand. I just have one question, my internet on ubuntu won't work, i checked all the settings and their all correct, it also passed the connection test on install but still no connection, any ideas on the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • You may need to select the network address translation (shared network adapter) option in virtual pc. I haven't looked at vpc for a while (I'm recommending vmware now) so I don't recall the exact keystrokes. If that doesn't resolve it, it will require more troubleshooting than I can really go into here.

  • Okay, thanks for the reply, i'll give that a go, if it doesn't work i guess i'll try vmware.

  • Thank you very much! Your tutorials are so easy to follow! Very helpful

  • um... when u say type the grub thing i dont get where you are it says warning, timeout ## sec stuff like that? help!

  • review prior comments in all three parts for most of the text commands that need to be entered. You may also wish to review my updated series using current versions of ubuntu and free vmware server or fusion for the mac as the virtualization application.

  • hi

do those screen command work for fedora 10 thnaks for the help and hard work ubuntu is working perfectly thanks again

  • The general process is the same but there are some differences between Ubuntu and Fedora (e.g. some of the configuration files have different names and they use different package management programs).

  • Great job explaining everything. Thanks for your hard work. Also, if you don't want to have to push alt everytime to free your mouse you can go up to "Action" on the VM and go to install updates. Then you will be able to move freely inside the VM and in your regular screen.

  • i cant make the = equal sighn when i shal type vga =0x314

  • If you can make it here, you should be able to make it during installation. Perhaps you have a non-standard keyboard. I'm not sure what to advise.

  • thank´s a lot man

  • THX =D... i cant believe that worked =]... but yeah just about everything worked well on it soo =].. thx for guiding me through it : )

  • sudo mano /boot/grub/menu.lst

    Right?

  • sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

Please review my newer series that shows you how to install current versions of Ubuntu using VMWare products for PC and Mac.

  • what i heave to search

    defaulth deph?

  • When I edited the files and reboot to see the "normal" login screen (about 4:00 on your tutorial movie) I get the text based login again instead of the graphical one ... I do have the correct iso not a server one or sth. like that...

  • It probably means either you didn't catch the grub menu at the right spot or you haven't released the CD iso and it is booting from it again.

You might want to take a look at the newer set of videos showing how to install ubuntu in vmware server or vmware fusion. There are several less steps and it works better with current versions of ubuntu.

  • Hmm I tried to avoid using vmware but maybe I will install it anyways.

I tought my computer was good enough to run Compizfusion (or beryl , whatever) inside a virtual PC but since I read a comment of you saying the VPC got grapics restrictions etc. i decided to just throw ubuntu + compizfusion onto my 2nd machine.

Now I got it there (got to say Ubuntu feels much better than windows altough I will have to learn most things from the beginning :P ) and I try to get compizfusion running. Thx anyways

  • what i heave to search at 0:35

  • i am going to try it

  • Bruce, I have followed your guide after days of messing with version 8.04 (as im new to this) and it is a fantastic guide, thanks so much

  • :D :D :D its a mircale!!!! i got sound working!!!

  • whats a carrige return???

  • press the enter/return key

  • at 0:35 what i heave to search

  • defaultdepth

  • it says defaultdepth not found

  • Try DefaultDepth.

I would recommend taking a look at the newer series I've posted using vmware and the 8.04 series from Ubuntu. A number of problems are resolved and the installation is much easier.

  • can you make a tutorisl of how to add sound b/c i still dont get how to add sound

  • it's been previously documented in the comments.

  • can you make a tutorisl of how to add sound b/c i still dont get how to add sound

  • can you make a tutorisl of how to add sound b/c i still dont get how to add sound

  • i am trying to install ubuntu 6.06 server but i keeps going to the text base login can u help me plz

  • Server is text based. There is no gui installed on the server by default, and generally, you wouldn't want one on server. It's all command line unless you install x-windows. Depends on what you are trying to do. Definitely beyond the scope of this tutorial.

  • dame b/c i was going to use it as a server to store all my things on it but if it is all text base well then i dont know wat to do.

  • You would probably want to use the new ubuntyu v8.04 server and set up ssh and Samba. That is the way you can share files on a linux server with windows machines. It's more than I can get into here.

  • do u know where i can get that program from???

  • They come with ubuntu server 8.04 as an installation option along with LAMP, DNS, Mail and a few others.

  • well i have the 6.06.2 server. where can i get the 8.04

  • ubuntuDOTcom

  • I just did this, and it worked like a charm. I'm posting this on Vitual PC Ubuntu. :P

Just one thing, there is no sound. I'll try to find a way to fix that, but if you know, it'd be great if you'd tell me. :D

  • The sound card is not automatically detected in VPC so edit the /etc/modules file (sudo nano /etc/modules) and add "snd-sb16" (without the quotes) on a line at the end of the file followed by a carriage return.

  • hey thanks you explained really well make more and do you have an iso image for any other systems??

    thx.Brod

  • More are on the way. There are ISO's for pretty much every linux system. see distrowatchDOTcom.

  • it ask's for username and password but I don't know what my username and password is for linux help?

  • If you selected the OEM install option, you'll need to reinstall. Otherwise, are you referring to the place in the installation where it asks you to create a username/password?

  • hey me again

forget all my other comments cause ive already fixed them.

but know i cant find desktop effects! i thought that if i updated to feisty fawn it would come up, but when i try to updte it says server error !!!!!

could you tell me how to fix plz

    cheers

  • I don't think you'll get desktop effects in virtual pc or vmware to work -- the graphics card emulation provides only a base level of suppport. For compiz or beryl to work, you need a dedicated installation or dual boot and a high end graphic card.

  • hey

i got ubuntu login screen fine but wen i try to type anything in the login box it dosnt do any thing. iv got control of the mouse and everything but it just wont let me type

    pz help cheers

  • vmw told me -first i must install ISS-internet information service

    its a must==??

  • No, just skip it.

  • wow

    it works --thanks man

    but without an internet conection

    and i must install vmw-tools??

    thanks again :-D

  • you can skip vmw-tools. re, the internet connection, make sure the connection is turned on in vmware and that you are using NAT if bridged doesn't work.

  • ??PLZ

tell me the the exactly vmware-name

    is it (Download VMware VirtualCenter)??

---not for server i think ;-/

witch kind of grafikcard does i need minimum??

    i use vista as OS!

and most time i try to install ubuntu told mae x-org (xorg-whatever???)(PLZ)

  • You want vmware server version 1.0.5 at vmwaredotcomslashdownloadslashserver. Don't download the 2.0 beta. Any graphic card that will run vista will run Ubuntu in a virtual machine (although you can't run beryl in a virtual machine in anycase).

  • OK thanks ;-)

    vmw=146MB

i hope it will work now :-/

    THANKS

  • oh and one more thing i have to ask for some reason after awhile the mouse wont click well the linux mouse will move but if i tap the mousepad or click any buttons it wont do anything is there any settings to fix this anyway thx for vid

  • Then perhaps you installed 7.04 or 7.10 instead of 6.10. This is a known problem. Try adding i8042.noloop to the end of the boot line at the same place you also add the vga=0x314 directive.

  • no its the 6.10 alt. but ill try that thx

  • One problem man, no sound! =( Says sound card not detected! What do I do?

  • This has been answered several times. The sound card is not automatically detected so edit the /etc/modules file (sudo nano /etc/modules) and add "snd-sb16" (without the quotes) on a line at the end of the file followed by a carriage return.

  • Hey, I gave up on virtual PC, and I got 7.10 and dual partitioned it on my PC. Everything works fine. :D

  • That works too. The reasons for doing this are different. With virtual PC or VMWare server, you can run both at the same time (and with vmware server, do a limited amount of file sharing). With dual boot, it's either or and to switch, you need to reboot.

  • okay im confused can you explain this to me more plz

  • Look up "dual boot" in Wikipedia for a discussion.

  • sry youtube put my comment in the wrong place i mean the sound how do i make that work

  • Look 5 messages up.

  • Thank you SOOOO much!!!! Omg the tutorial helped so much. This is my first time usuing Ubuntu. I think it's great! Thanks alot.

  • sudo nano /boot/grub/[and what next? i'm not english so i could not understand.

  • sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

  • I keep getting [ "defaultdepth" not found ]. What's up with it? I've done everything you said perfectly up till now. But now I'm stuck.

  • are you sure you are installing version 6.10?

  • Yes I am, but now I've installed and am using it. My problem was that I used lowercase letters instead of DefaultDepth (for anyone who has encountered the same problem...or was I just being dumb!?). Thanks for the reply though. And thanks for these vids; I've been trying to install Ubuntu for months!

    Cheers

By the way, are you a Linux programmer or anything of the sort?

  • By the way, are you a Linux programmer or anything of the sort?<< No, not if I can help it ;)

  • no me too lol i was freaking out for a second lol thx for commenting lol it helped me

  • Thank you for this valuable and informative tutorial! I was wondering if you had any problems after the install of ubuntu in virtual pc with it not recognizing the sound card? I also have an installation of damn small linux in virtual pc and it did not recognize the sound card as well. Thanks in advance for any advice you could give!

  • The sound card is not automatically detected so edit the /etc/modules file and add "snd-sb16" (without the quotes) on a line at the end of the file followed by a carriage return.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'll try it out! Love the "eating live octopus" video!

  • Where is it located at?

  • Where do I go to edit /ect/modules? Terminal? I try that and It says there is no /ect/modules for me to edit. Do you know a solution or where Im supost to put snd-sb16?

  • It's /etc/modules, not /ect/modules.

  • I use Virtual PC 2007 and The Ubuntu version 6.10 alternative as you said.

  • Iv'e got a problem you hopefully can solve. iv'e done EVERYTHING you said, but when i restart it after the coding and try to boot it up and launch into Ubuntu, i get a graphics error just after the Ubuntu Loading screen. it says that it couldn't start the X server because my graphics user interface most likely isn't correctly "set up". . .i use my local language, can that change anything, because other than that i haven't changed anything

  • If you can do a ctrl-alt-F1 and get a terminal prompt, you can try:

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Accept the defaults for everything except at the end, select 16 bit color depth instead of the default 24. If this doesn't work, try googling the exact error message.

  • download takes forever how much kb mb\

    its darn

  • Depending on the version, it's 500 - 700 mb.

  • does it matter what os you install

  • These directions cover Ubuntu v 6.10. Instructions will be more or less the same for other versions of Linux.

  • is this os like mac

  • similar in some respects. both are based on unix.

  • it doesnt capture mouse

  • Then you installed 7.04 or 7.10 instead of 6.10. The later versions have a bug with virtual PC. Read down through the comments for prior responses that list the fix.

  • ok, i found a code i can use for it

all i had to do was put

    i8042.noloop

  • ok, i am doing something wrong, because when i run ubuntu, my mouse doesnt work

  • i had the same problem it does not capture my mouse but it does register when i type

  • Then you installed 7.04 or 7.10 instead of 6.10. This is a known problem. Try adding i8042.noloop to the end of the boot line at the same place you also add the vga=0x314 directive.

  • i forgot my user and pass, do i need to start all over again?

  • you can boot into recovery mode from the grub menu, then list the /etc/passwd file to spot your username and use the passwd command to change the password.

  • wat was the menu grub command? i must have said it wrong

  • I got Ubuntu 7.10 to install on Virtual PC 2007 using the alternate cd (yay) i followed the instrustions but when Ubuntu botts up I cant use the mouse, everythign loads but i have no mouse function what do I do

Side note: Im using this as a school project so thanks much Bruce

  • this video covers ubuntu 6.10, not 7.10. You can try adding "i8042.noloop" (without the quote makrs) in the boot line after the vga=0x314 fix. that shold take care of it.

  • after fixing changes, I booted and it says 'Failed to start X server' What should I do?

  • Recheck your work. For this video, you must use the 6.10 alternate install ISO. The current versions require slightly different config info and works better using vmware rather than virtual PC. Check for typos. If you can't spot anything specific, try reinstalling.

  • I am going to download the 6.06 version, does that work like in the video?

  • To the best of my recollection, it will be nearly identical. I think the menu choices on the install menu might look a bit different, but otherwise, you should be fine. All the files you need to edit will be the same.

  • k thanks

  • hey i cantopen any programs in it i download stuff and it says it cant open it

  • TY SO MUCH IT WORKED!!!!

  • When I pressed Ctrl+W and typed in defaultdepth it said [ "DefaultDepth" not found ]. What do I do?

  • does this work on vista?

  • Yes.

  • Can you save your place and close virtual pc

    with out anything being erased?

  • yes.

  • And be able to install programs and stuff on it?

  • It would be easier if you would ask all your questions at once (or try it since it's all free), but yes.

  • i keep thinking of stuff after i would post but thats all i wanted to know thank you and i will try it

  • ok i need help one more time when i click on the window my mouse doesent go into the ubuntu linux screen it stays as my normal windows vista mouse

  • That means you didn't install version 6.10 as instructed. If you installed 7.04 or 7.10, you will need to edit the boot loader. Review the video for instructions on adding vga-0x314. In addition, you will need to add "i8042.noloop clock=pit" (without the quote marks) to the boot line.

  • omg thank you it finnally worked =D

  • after i put in "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.cnof"

in the text file there is olny a "x"

  • Looks like a typo. Make sure you have entered:

    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If you've typed it in correctly the file is there. Really.

    -b

  • when i open the file all i get is a "x" on the top left cornor of th screen

  • need more info than that! what file? what screen?

  • hey dude can you do a beryl at the same time

  • No, virtual pc doesn't provide the video support necessary.

  • What is smell, what the rock is cooking.

  • thanks man this is awsome ubuntu on my pc alright!

  • Mine all ways gets stuck on 6% on the base installation thing so what shall i do and then it gets stuck on 22% saying failure to run charoot /target mount -t proc proc /proc

  • Make sure you are selecting the default partitioning option. If that doesn't do it, post into the ubuntu user forum; this isn't something you should be getting in a virtual PC install using the default options.

  • where do u download ubuntu version u got ive got that 7.1 or somthing like that

  • plz help me i get a defaultdepth not found error did i spell it wrong by any chance or did i do something wrong should i restart and try again

  • It's DefaultDepth, keep looking!

  • You need version 6.10, not 7.04.

  • i was so curious n i am installing 7.04 cuz i wanted to know what bugs it has, i havent finished yet but now i know the first bug haha

  • There is a workaround; add i8042.noloop to the boot line right after vga=0x314 as shown in the video. In a few weeks, I'll do a new video showing install tricks for 7.04

  • ya xD but still i wanted to see what was gonna happen =D

  • Thanks again, virtual pc is a great way to practice dual booting

  • hey man, tanks fot everything, it works and i'm almost 13 years old :P

  • young nerd -0.0- nice ^__^ when u grow up u might turn richard stallman hehe

  • This also works with xubuntu for people with computers with low ram. xubuntu runs ok on 64 mb of ram, but you should use 128 mb for the installation

  • Thanks, but I'll just reinstall it, save me the hassle of tampering with internal text, and this time i'll try not to do whatever i have done! Again, one more time, thanks so much for this guide and support brucefulton!

  • I've tried that and alot of other possibilities. I'm thinking I might have to reinstall it again. Kubuntu is still functioning brilliantly and your guide still applies to that too! Except that even saving the "vga=0x314" i have to reinput it everytime I start my phiscal computer. But never mind, it's not hard. Thanks again!

  • I guess I'd need more info. You can save the vga parameter by adding it to the default kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst down toward the bottom where it stores the default boot configuration line.

  • Sorry Burcefulton, what i mean is desktop icons will load and appear but the top and bottom bar logos, icons and menus just dont load or appear, what's the problem?

  • right-alt and enter to enter and close full screen mode. See if that is the problem.

  • thanx, also, i used this guide for installing kubuntu, its works fine too, you really do know your stuff!

  • Not really enough to go on there. It's possible that a kernal update negated the changes to xorg.conf. Try hitting escape to get to the grub menu, hit e for edit at the default boot line, then arrow down to the kernal line (line #2) hit edit again, arrow to the end of the line, add vga=0x314, press enter and then hit b for boot. that will get you to the place in the video where you can redo the edits to menu.lst and xort.conf.

  • hey brucefulton. i've hit a snag, everything worked fine. but every time i use it now, the two taskbars at the top and the bottom are blank. i mean nothing appears there, i rebooted a couple of times, them most i got was that messenger icon, but nothing else, please help! also, your guide was excellent, 5 stars, thanks alot!

  • hey i have installed it and i have everything working perfectly except there is no sound, please help!

  • Thankyou so much..that was an awesome video!!

  • THANK YOU, REALLY : thanks, you are the best ! i am so happy !!!! sooooooo happy !!!!! your a really good teacher, really. thanks ! :)

  • HA HA this is awesome thank you very much.
