I really enjoyed the Tame Cats Build and Maiden Flight, I know that air bubbles in the fuel will shut down the jet, Question ? would a bladder tank and springs in the fuel line at the fuel injection spray valve help to eliminate air bubbles and keep the jet running, and would a on board ignition system or a glow plug help to keep the jet running, just my 2 cents worth, BTW I really enjoyed your Hummor and Aussie Accent :) :) :) Take care and have fun, Chellie in So. Back in '76 by buddy and I first fired up his Redhead pulsejet in the alley in about 4 ft of snow.
Just for the heck of it, we tried some stating spray (ether) while it was running. Talk about a spectacular exhaust flame! It cooled the tube too- the color darkened momentarily, but the sound was awesome. It would be cool if you could figure a safe way to inject short bursts for flybys!
@xjet Ah, just found this. Epic ! The Kerosene-Powered Flame-Farting Flying- Didgeridoo... ; Yahoo ! I still have an old 70's Advertisement for a pair of these, on a Hang-Glider's A-Frame, fed by a Butane Backpack...! Reportedly, when tried, it pitched up uncontrollably, then stalled & slid backwards to crash ; and then it burned, when the Jets lit the Dacron. Pulse-Jet & Weight-Shift, bad combination !
i know its a stupid question but how much dose the puls jet weigh and is it more eficent than a turbine i am only asking these question because were we fly your not aloud turbins
Thats great, I assume you are using ordinary petrol from the pump?...Why dont you use a pressurised tank?...IE an aerosol type container you can then pressurise with air and a regulator on it to give constant feed pressure to the liquid tank. You just open the fuel feed after the engine starts up....:)...Constant setting regardless of flight effects.....:) I make my own turbine engines BTW..:)
@EnglishTurbines Having a pressurized container filled with petrol onboard an RC model is decidedly unsafe. Should something go wrong, it could become a massive incendiary device ;-(
@xjet No, I dont think you understand. A small metal can is pressurised with say 80 PSI. You then use an air pressure regulator to pressurise the fuel tank....just 0.25 PSI will give a consistant flow and a reliable run. Pulse Jets are poor at sucking fuel, like most engines for that matter. This WILL cure your lean outs...trust me. Failing that you could use a small electric fuel pump like we use on our gas turbines, but the pressure method is simpler for the simple Pulse Jet.
@EnglishTurbines My engines have a pressure tap on them so I actually get about 2PSI of pressure from the combustion chamber to push the fuel through when they're running. However, on this model there is a very large difference between the fuel-jet and the tank level so when you pull very high Gs, the pressure is not enough to compensate for the fuel-head.
@xjet Yes, but you forgetting, pressure conditions in a Pulse Jet change during flight, and so will your pressure from your tapping point. You need something constant which does not rely on pressures generated from within the engine itself. Your tapping point will also pulse...just like the engine itself does as the pressure wave travels back and forth along the engine.
@EnglishTurbines Due to the elasticity of the gases involved, the choking effect of the small (0.8mm) orifice through which they must pass and the mass of the fuel, a huge amount of integration (smoothing) takes place so that the resultant pressure in the tank is surprisingly stable. It's a system that works very well on my other aircraft but they only have a fuel-head of about 3-4 inches. On this one it's closer to 8 inches when the tank is half full.
@xjet Yes, the Tank is low compared to the engines position on this bird. The Doodlebug used a spherical pressure chamber to keep it fed with petrol during flight. If you could use your system, then for sure the Germans would have done the same, as its simpler....but its not reliable.
@davidrodgersNJ A pulse engine are extremely inefficient when compared against a moder turbofan engine. Also, it's impossible to implement on them a decent throttle on them, they're optimized to run "effiently" at a certain fuel/air intake ratio. Pulse engines are similar to afterburners in a fighter jet, they provide a constant amount of (extra) thrust in a relatively simple way, but simplicity comes with compromises, the main ones being the lack of control (throttle) and fuel efficiency.
For ages I've seen vids of ppl on youtube with pulsejet engines, showing that they work, but not showing them actually propelling anything lol. Thanks for demonstrating they can be used for something :) looks like fun!
@davidrodgersNJ Maybe, but they probably wouldnt work very well at high altitudes because there isnt enough oxygen. And thats why turbine engines have compressors. (correct me if im wrong)
@xjet have you ever thought about building a plane with pulse jet that could run for alot longer on a larger fuel supply and maybe be able to be throttled so you can control your air speed?
that's pretty kewl.. i'm just learning about the pulse jet engine. it looks like to me from looking at other videos that the valveless would create less thrust, wasting combustion. were you blowing air into the valves for start up? is the fuel suppy or feed a big issue with these?
Very nice! I had thought that pulse jets had gone the way of the Pterodactyl. Nice to see that some are still flying. Definitely a change from the norm at the flying field.
now if i remember Jeff Troy..original designer use to live in NJ or Pa. ,He might also be editing a magazine"backyard flyer" or something to that effect if he see's this it would be nice*****
Nice one mate and we can say that was a great little maiden even if it did cut out because it went to lean, can't wait for the mods to be done so we can see a longer flight mate = 5*
well done Bruce! excellent flight..must also thank pit crew member Barry! excellent job barry! It seem that you have made him a bit of a you tube star bruce!
TopRC had them but I think they've sold out. it seems that every time I convert an ARF to pulsejet power (Long-EZ, BobCat, TameCat) the supply of the airframes dries up almost overnight. I wonder why that is? :-)

Have you done or know anyone who has done a FPV "how to" I'm finding it difficult to understand what lit is needed and what the options are.

For the money, pulse jets are the most
efficient jet./rocket engines ever made.
That why they scare governments.
They're cheaply and easily made!

Given how simple they are, I wonder why pulse jets aren't used in full-scale aircraft. Are they inefficient users of fuel?
