I don't like Chrome since it does not have any of the add-on I need. To many kill pages. Firefox I will stay with forever. But in the end it's really up to each person. :)
"We dont havea a lot of time to do all of those.." - crabby in his old age eh?
very cool .. I remember downloading this for linux over dialup .. took about 25-35 minutes on 33.6k dialup... and it was 11MB if I remember - about the size of the cache for 3-4 websites of today.
@VoidKeeper not totally. Netscape was part of the Mozilla Corp. Who helped build Netscape then evolved into firefox. After a while Mozilla just abandoned Netscape and moved on. Netscape is not entirely dead.
Ahhh the days of Browser Wars I. Before Google ad clicks took over the Web, those days were a pleasure to surf. A lot of people were experimenting with web design and the internet community was, ahem, nicer. Back then, business was still trying to figure out how to make money from the internet. Markets have a way of solving problems and they came up with javascript, actionscript, cookies and so forth.
Netscape didn't have an operating system like Microsoft in which to pre-load Netscape for the entire world. Otherwise we might today be using "Netscape Communicator 2010".
I remember using this as a 24 year old in 1995. Netscape was the Google of its era. It was the cool thing to use (actually, the only reliable browser).
I went to Netscape seminars in Silicon Valley and they were like gods. Now they are like a broken old statue standing in the ruins in the Egyptian desert.
GOOD MEMORIES! This was when the Web was exciting and new!
@maiki60fps Sad Google is stubbornly and inexplicably ignorant enough to think they can get away with a browser without giving the user a dropdown history in the URL window. Deal breaker. I'd like to use Chrome. I'm an android guy and I like the speed of Chrome but it's almost as if they are defiantly denying something so basic, so essential as a quick link to the browsing history via the drop down. Sorry Google. Ya fugged up. Firefox for me until you wake the fuck up
Netscape was better than Explorer in 1994. But now FireFox is the successor of Netscape, its a good chalenger for Microsoft. No competition is very bad for development!
@MichaelJacob02 you do realize that there are actually a lot of people in the world that have no idea what the difference is between a web browser and a search engine... right? for example lets not forget when Read Write Web posted "Facebook Wants to Be Your One True Login" and suddenly no one could find "the old facebook".... like seriously?
with that being said i think the book could be a little bigger... people are idiots!
For those missing Netscape, The Mozilla team ( of Firefox ) have Seamonkey, which I think is similar. They even say that, they try to recreate the Netscape feel in creating it.
@HeyItsASquirrel "AOL formally stopped development of Netscape Navigator on December 28, 2007, but continued supporting the web browser with security updates until March 1, 2008, when AOL canceled technical support."
Interestingly enough, Netscape is still in business even though their browsers aren't used as much anymore. Like most people I used the Navigator and the Communicator.
